1 A long time went by, and the word of Yahweh came to Elijah in the third year, 'Go, present yourself toAhab, and I wil send rain on the country.'	1 - Molto tempo dopo, la parola del Signore fu rivolta ad Elia, nel terzo anno, in questi termini: «Va', e mostrati ad Acab, perchè io mandi la pioggia sulla faccia della terra».
2 So Elijah set off to present himself to Ahab. As the famine was particularly severe in Samaria,	2 Andò dunque Elia a presentarsi ad Acab. La carestia era grandissima nella Samaria
3 Ahab summoned Obadiah, the master of the palace -- Obadiah held Yahweh in great reverence:	3 e Acab chiamò Abdia maggiordomo della sua casa. Abdia però temeva assai il Signore;
4 when Jezebel was butchering the prophets of Yahweh, Obadiah took a hundred of them and hid them,fifty at a time, in a cave, and kept them provided with food and water-	4 infatti quando Jezabel faceva morire i profeti del Signore, egli avea preso cento profeti e li aveva nascosti, cinquanta in una spelonca e cinquanta in un'altra, e li aveva nutriti a pane ed acqua.
5 and Ahab said to Obadiah, 'Come along, we must scour the country, all the springs and all the ravinesin the hope of finding grass to keep horses and mules alive, or we shall have to slaughter some of our stock.'	5 Disse dunque Acab ad Abdia: «Va' in tutto il paese, a tutte le fontane d'acqua, e in tutte le valli, e vedi se possiamo trovare erba e salvare i cavalli e i muli, affinchè le bestie non periscano interamente».
6 They divided the country for the purpose of their survey; Ahab went one way by himself and Obadiahwent another way by himself.	6 Si divisero quindi il paese e lo percorsero; Acab se ne andava per una strada e Abdia per un'altra, ciascuno per conto suo.
7 While Obadiah was on his way, whom should he meet but Elijah. Recognising him he fel on his faceand said, 'So it is you, my lord Elijah!'	7 Mentre Abdia era in viaggio, ecco Elia venirgli incontro. Avendolo egli conosciuto, si prostrò colla faccia a terra e disse: «Se' tu forse Elia, mio signore?».
8 'Yes,' he replied, 'go and tel your master, "Elijah is here." '	8 Ed egli rispose: «Son io. Va' e di' al tuo signore: - Elia è qua -».
9 But Obadiah said, 'What sin I have committed, for you to put your servant into Ahab's power and causemy death?	9 Ed egli disse: «Che peccato ho fatto, perchè tu dia me tuo servo nelle mani di Acab per uccidermi?
10 As Yahweh your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my master has not sent in search ofyou; and when they said, "He is not there," he made the kingdom or nation swear an oath that they did not knowwhere you were.	10 Viva il Signore Dio tuo! non v'è popolo o regno, dove il mio signore non abbia mandato a cercarti e poichè tutti gli rispondevano: - Non è qui, - egli faceva giurare ogni regno e ogni nazione che proprio non ti aveva trovato.
11 And now you say to me, "Go and tel your master: Elijah is here."	11 Ed ora tu dici a me: - Va' a dire al tuo padrone: " È qua Elia ".-
12 But as soon as I leave you, the spirit of Yahweh wil carry you away and I shal not know where; I shalgo and tel Ahab; he wil not be able to find you, and then he wil kil me. Yet from his youth your servant hasrevered Yahweh.	12 Appena io mi sarò allontanato da te, lo Spirito del Signore ti trasporterà in un luogo che io ignoro; io andrò a portar l'annunzio ad Acab, il quale, non trovandoti, mi ucciderà. Il tuo servo ha sempre temuto il Signore fin dalla sua infanzia.
13 Has no one told my lord what I did when Jezebel butchered the prophets of Yahweh, how I hid ahundred of them in a cave, fifty at a time, and kept them provided with food and water?	13 Non ti è stato riferito, o mio signore, ciò che io feci quando Jezabel uccideva i profeti del Signore? Come nascosi cento di questi profeti del Signore, cinquanta in una spelonca e cinquanta in un'altra, e come li ho sostentati con pane ed acqua?
14 And now you say to me, "Go and tel your master: Elijah is here." Why, he wil kill me!'	14 E tu ora dici: - Va' a dire al tuo padrone: " Elia è qua, affinchè egli mi uccida? " -».
15 Elijah replied, 'As Yahweh Sabaoth lives, whom I serve, I shal present myself to him today!'	15 Ma Elia rispose: «Viva il Signore degli eserciti dinanzi al quale io sto! Oggi mi presenterò ad Acab».
16 Obadiah went to find Ahab and tel him the news, and Ahab then went to find Elijah.	16 Abdia se ne andò incontro ad Acab e lo informò della cosa, e Acab venne alla volta di Elia.
17 When he saw Elijah, Ahab said, 'So there you are, you scourge of Israel!'	17 Appena lo vide, gli disse: «Sei tu quegli che getta il turbamento in Israele?».
18 'Not I,' he replied, 'I am not the scourge of Israel, you and your family are; because you have desertedYahweh and fol owed Baal.	18 Elia rispose: «Non io getto il turbamento in Israele, ma tu e la casa del padre tuo, che avete abbandonato i comandi del Signore e vi metteste a seguire i Baal.
19 Now give orders for all Israel to gather round me on Mount Carmel, and also the four hundredprophets of Baal who eat at Jezebel's table.'	19 Tuttavia ora manda a radunare tutto Israele presso di me, sulla montagna del Carmelo, e i quattrocentocinquanta profeti di Baal e i quattrocento profeti dei boschetti sacri che mangiano alla mensa di Jezabel».
20 Ahab cal ed al Israel together and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel.	20 Acab mandò messaggeri a tutti i figli d'Israele e riunì i profeti sulla montagna del Carmelo.
21 Elijah stepped out in front of al the people. 'How long', he said, 'do you mean to hobble first on oneleg then on the other? If Yahweh is God, follow him; if Baal, fol ow him.' But the people had nothing to say.	21 Accostandosi allora Elia a tutto il popolo, disse: «Fino a quando zoppicherete voi da due parti? Se il Signore è Dio, seguitelo; se invece è Baal, seguite pure lui». Ma il popolo non rispose.
22 Elijah then said to them, 'I, I alone, am left as a prophet of Yahweh, while the prophets of Baal arefour hundred and fifty.	22 Elia di nuovo disse al popolo: «Son rimasto io solo dei profeti del Signore, mentre i profeti di Baal sono in quattrocentocinquanta.
23 Let two bulls be given us; let them choose one for themselves, dismember it but not set fire to it. I inmy turn shal prepare the other bul , but not set fire to it.	23 Si diano due buoi, ed essi si scelgano un bue, lo facciano a pezzi, e lo pongano sopra le legna; ma non vi appicchino il fuoco. Anch'io prenderò l'altro bue, lo porrò sopra le legna e non vi metterò sotto il fuoco.
24 You must cal on the name of your god, and I shal cal on the name of Yahweh; the god who answerswith fire, is God indeed.' The people al answered, 'Agreed!'	24 Invocate i nomi dei vostri dèi ed io invocherò il nome del mio Signore, e il Dio che esaudirà mediante il fuoco, egli sia Dio». Tutto il popolo rispose: «Ottima proposta».
25 Elijah then said to the prophets of Baal, 'Choose one bul and begin, for there are more of you. Call onthe name of your god but light no fire.'	25 Disse dunque Elia ai profeti di Baal: «Sceglietevi uno dei buoi e fate per primi, poichè voi siete molti; invocate il nome dei vostri dèi e non mettete fuoco sotto».
26 They took the bul and prepared it, and from morning to midday they called on the name of Baal. 'OBaal, answer us!' they cried, but there was no voice, no answer, as they performed their hobbling dance roundthe altar which they had made.	26 Quelli, preso il bue che era stato loro dato, lo prepararono e si misero a invocare il nome di Baal dal mattino fino a mezzogiorno, dicendo: «Baal, esaudiscici». Ma non s'udì nè voce nè risposta; ed essi saltavano intorno all'altare che avevano fatto.
27 Midday came, and Elijah mocked them. 'Cal louder,' he said, 'for he is a god: he is preoccupied or heis busy, or he has gone on a journey; perhaps he is asleep and needs to be woken up!'	27 Essendo già mezzogiorno, Elia si prendeva giuoco di loro, dicendo: «Gridate più forte, poichè egli è dio e forse parla oppure è andato all'osteria, o è in viaggio o certamente dorme e bisogna svegliarlo».
28 So they shouted louder and gashed themselves, as their custom was, with swords and spears untilthe blood flowed down them.	28 Ed essi gridavano ad alta voce e si facevano come è loro costume delle incisioni con coltelli e lancette, fino a grondar sangue.
29 Midday passed, and they ranted on until the time when the offering is presented; but there was novoice, no answer, no sign of attention.	29 Ma poichè era passato mezzogiorno, e continuando essi a profetare era venuto il tempo in cui si suole offrire il sacrificio, e non si era sentita nessuna voce e nessuno rispondeva o dava retta a quei che pregavano,
30 Then Elijah said to al the people, 'Come over to me,' and al the people came over to him. Herepaired Yahweh's altar which had been torn down.	30 Elia disse a tutto il popolo: «Accostatevi». Accostatosi il popolo, egli ricostruì l'altare del Signore, che era stato distrutto.
31 Elijah took twelve stones, corresponding to the number of tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom theword of Yahweh had come, 'Israel is to be your name,'	31 Prese poi dodici pietre, secondo il numero delle dodici tribù dei figli di Giacobbe, al quale il Signore aveva detto: «Israele sarà il tuo nome»,
32 and built an altar in the name of Yahweh. Round the altar he dug a trench of a size to hold twomeasures of seed.	32 ed edificò colle pietre un altare al nome del Signore e fece un fosso come due piccoli solchi intorno all'altare;
33 He then arranged the wood, dismembered the bull, and laid it on the wood.	33 dispose poi le legna e, diviso a pezzi il bue, lo pose sopra le legna,
34 Then he said, 'Fil four jars with water and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood.' They did this.He said, 'Do it a second time;' they did it a second time. He said, 'Do it a third time;' they did it a third time.	34 e disse: «Riempite quattro idrie d'acqua e versatele sopra l'olocausto e sopra le legna»; poi di nuovo disse: «Fate lo stesso una seconda volta»; e come l'ebbero fatto la seconda volta, soggiunse: «Fatelo ancora una terza volta». Lo fecero anche la terza volta
35 The water flowed round the altar until even the trench itself was ful of water.	35 e le acque scorrevano intorno all'altare e anche il fosso ne era ripieno.
36 At the time when the offering is presented, Elijah the prophet stepped forward. 'Yahweh, God ofAbraham, Isaac and Israel,' he said, 'let them know today that you are God in Israel, and that I am your servant,that I have done all these things at your command.	36 Essendo già venuto il tempo d'offrire l'olocausto, il profeta Elia si avvicinò e disse: «Signore, Dio d'Abramo, d'Isacco, e di Israele, mostra oggi che tu sei il Dio di Israele e che io sono il tuo servo e che tutto quello che ho fatto lo feci secondo il tuo comando.
37 Answer me, Yahweh, answer me, so that this people may know that you, Yahweh, are God and arewinning back their hearts.'	37 Esaudiscimi, o Signore, esaudiscimi, affinchè questo popolo impari che tu sei il Signore Iddio e che tu di nuovo converti i loro cuori».
38 Then Yahweh's fire fel and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and licked up the water in thetrench.	38 E il fuoco del Signore cadde e divorò l'olocausto e le legna e le pietre e perfino la polvere e l'acqua che era nel fosso e lambiva [l'altare].
39 When al the people saw this they fell on their faces. 'Yahweh is God,' they cried, 'Yahweh is God!'	39 Al veder ciò tutto il popolo cadde bocconi, ed esclamò: «È il Signore che è Dio! È il Signore che è Dio!».
40 Elijah said, 'Seize the prophets of Baal: do not let one of them escape.' They seized them, and Elijahtook them down to the Kishon, and there he slaughtered them.	40 Disse allora Elia ad essi: «Impadronitevi dei profeti di Baal e neppur uno ne scampi!». Ed essi li presero, ed Elia li fece discendere al torrente Cison e colà li uccise.
41 Elijah said to Ahab, 'Go back now, eat and drink; for I hear the approaching sound of rain.'	41 Poi Elia disse ad Acab: «Ascendi, mangia e bevi, poichè sentesi il rumore di gran pioggia».
42 While Ahab went back to eat and drink, Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel and bowed down to theground, putting his face between his knees.	42 Acab salì per mangiare e per bere, mentre Elia venuto sulla sommità del Carmelo, piegandosi verso terra, mise la sua faccia tra le ginocchia,
43 'Now go up', he told his servant, 'and look out to sea.' He went up and looked. 'There is nothing at al ,'he said. Seven times Elijah told him to go back.	43 e disse al suo servo: «Va' su, e guarda dalla parte del mare». Essendo egli salito e avendo ben guardato, disse: «Non vi è nulla». Di nuovo gli disse: «Ritornavi per sette volte».
44 The seventh time, the servant said, 'Now there is a cloud, smal as a man's hand, rising from the sea.'Elijah said, 'Go and say to Ahab, "Harness the chariot and go down before the rain stops you." '	44 Alla settima volta [il servo disse]: «Ecco una piccola nube, quasi l'orma di un uomo, ascendere dal mare». Elia rispose: «Sali e di' ad Acab: - Allestisci il tuo carro e discendi per non essere colto dalla pioggia -».
45 And with that the sky grew dark with cloud and storm, and rain fel in torrents. Ahab mounted hischariot and made for Jezreel.	45 Mentre egli si guardava di qua e di là, il cielo si oscurò per le molte nubi e per il vento e cadde abbondantissima pioggia. Acab pertanto salito sul cocchio partì per Jezrael,
46 But the hand of Yahweh had come on Elijah and, hitching up his clothes, he ran ahead of Ahab al theway to Jezreel.	46 mentre Elia, sul quale era la mano del Signore, si cinse i lombi e corse davanti a Acab finchè arrivò a Jezrael.
