1 A long time went by, and the word of Yahweh came to Elijah in the third year, 'Go, present yourself toAhab, and I wil send rain on the country.'	1 Longtemps après - cela faisait déjà trois ans - la parole de Dieu fut adressée à Élie: “Va et montre-toi à Akab, je vais faire tomber la pluie sur la terre.”
2 So Elijah set off to present himself to Ahab. As the famine was particularly severe in Samaria,	2 Élie partit donc pour se présenter devant Akab. La famine était terrible à Samarie.
3 Ahab summoned Obadiah, the master of the palace -- Obadiah held Yahweh in great reverence:	3 Akab venait d’envoyer Obadyas, chef du palais royal, - cet Obadyas avait réellement la crainte de Yahvé;
4 when Jezebel was butchering the prophets of Yahweh, Obadiah took a hundred of them and hid them,fifty at a time, in a cave, and kept them provided with food and water-	4 lorsque Jézabel avait massacré les prophètes de Yahvé, Obadyas en avait pris 100 et les avait cachés 50 par 50 dans des grottes où il leur apportait du pain et de l’eau.
5 and Ahab said to Obadiah, 'Come along, we must scour the country, all the springs and all the ravinesin the hope of finding grass to keep horses and mules alive, or we shall have to slaughter some of our stock.'	5 Akab dit à Obadyas: “Parcours le pays, va inspecter toutes les sources et tous les torrents. Peut-être trouverons-nous de l’herbe pour garder en vie chevaux et mulets au lieu d’abattre les bêtes.”
6 They divided the country for the purpose of their survey; Ahab went one way by himself and Obadiahwent another way by himself.	6 Ils se partagèrent donc le pays pour le parcourir: Akab partit seul par un chemin, et Obadyas aussi seul par un autre chemin.
7 While Obadiah was on his way, whom should he meet but Elijah. Recognising him he fel on his faceand said, 'So it is you, my lord Elijah!'	7 Alors qu’Obadyas était en route, Élie vint à sa rencontre. Obadyas le reconnut, tomba la face contre terre et lui dit: “Est-ce toi, mon seigneur Élie?”
8 'Yes,' he replied, 'go and tel your master, "Elijah is here." '	8 Il lui répondit: “Oui, c’est moi. Va dire à ton maître que j’arrive.”
9 But Obadiah said, 'What sin I have committed, for you to put your servant into Ahab's power and causemy death?	9 Obadyas répondit: “Quel péché ai-je commis pour que tu livres ton serviteur entre les mains d’Akab? Il me fera mourir!
10 As Yahweh your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my master has not sent in search ofyou; and when they said, "He is not there," he made the kingdom or nation swear an oath that they did not knowwhere you were.	10 Aussi vrai que Yahvé, ton Dieu, est vivant, il n’y a pas un pays, il n’y a pas un royaume où mon maître n’ait envoyé te chercher. Et lorsqu’on disait: ‘Élie n’est pas ici’, il faisait jurer ce royaume ou ce pays qu’on ne t’avait pas vu.
11 And now you say to me, "Go and tel your master: Elijah is here."	11 “Et maintenant je devrais dire à mon maître que tu arrives?
12 But as soon as I leave you, the spirit of Yahweh wil carry you away and I shal not know where; I shalgo and tel Ahab; he wil not be able to find you, and then he wil kil me. Yet from his youth your servant hasrevered Yahweh.	12 Lorsque je t’aurai quitté, le temps que j’informe Akab, l’esprit de Yahvé t’aura transporté je ne sais où et, comme on ne te trouvera pas, il me mettra à mort. Cependant, tu le sais, ton serviteur craint Yahvé depuis qu’il est enfant.
13 Has no one told my lord what I did when Jezebel butchered the prophets of Yahweh, how I hid ahundred of them in a cave, fifty at a time, and kept them provided with food and water?	13 N’a-t-on pas raconté à mon seigneur ce que j’ai fait lorsque Jézabel massacrait les prophètes de Yahvé? J’ai caché 100 prophètes de Yahvé, 50 par 50 dans des grottes, et je leur ai donné le pain et l’eau.
14 And now you say to me, "Go and tel your master: Elijah is here." Why, he wil kill me!'	14 Tu veux que j’aille dire à ton maître: ‘Voici Élie!’ mais il me tuera.”
15 Elijah replied, 'As Yahweh Sabaoth lives, whom I serve, I shal present myself to him today!'	15 Élie lui répondit: “Aussi vrai que Yahvé Sabaot, celui que je sers, est vivant, aujourd’hui même je me présenterai devant Akab.”
16 Obadiah went to find Ahab and tel him the news, and Ahab then went to find Elijah.	16 Obadyas alla donc trouver Akab pour lui porter la nouvelle: Akab partit à la rencontre d’Élie.
17 When he saw Elijah, Ahab said, 'So there you are, you scourge of Israel!'	17 Dès qu’Akab aperçut Élie, il lui dit: “Ah! le voilà celui qui fait le malheur d’Israël!”
18 'Not I,' he replied, 'I am not the scourge of Israel, you and your family are; because you have desertedYahweh and fol owed Baal.	18 Élie répondit: “Ce n’est pas moi qui fais le malheur d’Israël, c’est toi et la maison de ton père, car vous avez abandonné les commandements de Yahvé et vous vous êtes tournés vers les Baals.
19 Now give orders for all Israel to gather round me on Mount Carmel, and also the four hundredprophets of Baal who eat at Jezebel's table.'	19 Fais donc rassembler tout Israël; qu’ils viennent vers moi au mont Carmel, et avec eux les 450 prophètes de Baal qui mangent à la table de Jézabel.”
20 Ahab cal ed al Israel together and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel.	20 Akab fit convoquer tout Israël au mont Carmel, il rassembla également les prophètes.
21 Elijah stepped out in front of al the people. 'How long', he said, 'do you mean to hobble first on oneleg then on the other? If Yahweh is God, follow him; if Baal, fol ow him.' But the people had nothing to say.	21 Alors Élie s’approcha du peuple et dit: “Combien de temps encore sauterez-vous d’un pied sur l’autre? Si Yahvé est Dieu, suivez-le, si c’est Baal, suivez-le.” Le peuple ne répondit pas.
22 Elijah then said to them, 'I, I alone, am left as a prophet of Yahweh, while the prophets of Baal arefour hundred and fifty.	22 Élie dit au peuple: “Je suis le seul qui reste des prophètes de Yahvé, et vous voyez ici les 450 prophètes de Baal.
23 Let two bulls be given us; let them choose one for themselves, dismember it but not set fire to it. I inmy turn shal prepare the other bul , but not set fire to it.	23 Que l’on nous donne deux taureaux! Ils en choisiront un, ils le couperont en morceaux et ils le placeront sur le bois, mais ils n’y mettront pas le feu. Moi, je préparerai l’autre taureau, je le placerai sur le bois mais je n’y mettrai pas le feu.
24 You must cal on the name of your god, and I shal cal on the name of Yahweh; the god who answerswith fire, is God indeed.' The people al answered, 'Agreed!'	24 “Puis vous invoquerez le nom de votre dieu, et moi j’invoquerai le nom de Yahvé. Le Dieu qui répondra par le feu, c’est lui qui est Dieu.” Tout le peuple répondit: “Très bien!”
25 Elijah then said to the prophets of Baal, 'Choose one bul and begin, for there are more of you. Call onthe name of your god but light no fire.'	25 Élie dit aux prophètes de Baal: “Puisque vous êtes les plus nombreux, choisissez les premiers votre taureau. Préparez-le, invoquez le nom de votre dieu, mais ne mettez pas le feu.”
26 They took the bul and prepared it, and from morning to midday they called on the name of Baal. 'OBaal, answer us!' they cried, but there was no voice, no answer, as they performed their hobbling dance roundthe altar which they had made.	26 Ils prirent donc le taureau qu’on leur présenta, ils le préparèrent et ils invoquèrent le nom de Baal depuis le matin jusqu’à midi en criant: “Baal, réponds-nous!” Mais on n’entendit rien, il n’y eut pas de réponse pendant qu’ils sautaient devant l’autel qu’ils avaient construit.
27 Midday came, and Elijah mocked them. 'Cal louder,' he said, 'for he is a god: he is preoccupied or heis busy, or he has gone on a journey; perhaps he is asleep and needs to be woken up!'	27 Midi arriva; Élie se moqua d’eux: “Criez plus fort, leur dit-il. Il est Dieu, bien sûr, mais il est en méditation, ou il est occupé, ou en voyage; peut-être il dort et vous allez le réveiller.”
28 So they shouted louder and gashed themselves, as their custom was, with swords and spears untilthe blood flowed down them.	28 Ils crièrent de plus en plus fort et se firent selon leurs habitudes des entailles avec des épées et des couteaux pour faire couler le sang.
29 Midday passed, and they ranted on until the time when the offering is presented; but there was novoice, no answer, no sign of attention.	29 Ils gesticulèrent encore tout l’après-midi jusqu’au moment où l’on présente l’offrande du soir, mais on n’entendit rien: pas de réponse, pas de réaction!
30 Then Elijah said to al the people, 'Come over to me,' and al the people came over to him. Herepaired Yahweh's altar which had been torn down.	30 Élie dit alors à tout le peuple: “Approchez-vous de moi.” Tous le peuple s’approcha d’Élie tandis qu’il relevait l’autel de Yahvé qui avait été renversé.
31 Elijah took twelve stones, corresponding to the number of tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom theword of Yahweh had come, 'Israel is to be your name,'	31 Il prit 12 pierres selon le nombre des tribus de Jacob, l’homme qui avait reçu cette parole de Yahvé: “Ton nom sera Israël.”
32 and built an altar in the name of Yahweh. Round the altar he dug a trench of a size to hold twomeasures of seed.	32 Élie disposa les pierres, puis il creusa autour de l’autel un fossé qui pouvait contenir deux mesures.
33 He then arranged the wood, dismembered the bull, and laid it on the wood.	33 Il prépara le bois, coupa le taureau en morceaux et les disposa sur le bois.
34 Then he said, 'Fil four jars with water and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood.' They did this.He said, 'Do it a second time;' they did it a second time. He said, 'Do it a third time;' they did it a third time.	34 Puis il dit: “Remplissez d’eau quatre cruches et versez-les sur l’holocauste et sur le bois.” On le fit et il leur dit: “Recommencez!” On le fit une seconde fois. Il ajouta: “Une troisième fois!” Et on le fit une troisième fois.
35 The water flowed round the altar until even the trench itself was ful of water.	35 L’eau coula autour de l’autel et remplit tout le fossé.
36 At the time when the offering is presented, Elijah the prophet stepped forward. 'Yahweh, God ofAbraham, Isaac and Israel,' he said, 'let them know today that you are God in Israel, and that I am your servant,that I have done all these things at your command.	36 À l’heure où l’on présente l’offrande du soir, Élie le prophète s’avança et il dit: “Yahvé, Dieu d’Abraham, d’Isaac et d’Israël, que l’on sache aujourd’hui que tu es Dieu en Israël, que je suis ton serviteur, et que j’ai agi en tout selon ta parole.
37 Answer me, Yahweh, answer me, so that this people may know that you, Yahweh, are God and arewinning back their hearts.'	37 Réponds-moi, Yahvé, réponds-moi! Que ce peuple sache que tu es Dieu, toi Yahvé, et que c’est toi qui convertis leur cœur!”
38 Then Yahweh's fire fel and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and licked up the water in thetrench.	38 Le feu de Yahvé tomba, il dévora l’holocauste et le bois, et il absorba toute l’eau qui était dans le fossé.
39 When al the people saw this they fell on their faces. 'Yahweh is God,' they cried, 'Yahweh is God!'	39 À cette vue, tout le peuple tomba la face contre terre, on criait: “C’est Yahvé qui est Dieu! C’est Yahvé qui est Dieu!”
40 Elijah said, 'Seize the prophets of Baal: do not let one of them escape.' They seized them, and Elijahtook them down to the Kishon, and there he slaughtered them.	40 Alors Élie leur dit: “Arrêtez les prophètes de Baal, que pas un d’entre eux n’échappe!” On mit la main sur eux; Élie les fit descendre au torrent de Quichon, et là il les égorgea.
41 Elijah said to Ahab, 'Go back now, eat and drink; for I hear the approaching sound of rain.'	41 Élie dit à Akab: “Remonte maintenant, mange et bois, car voici le tonnerre qui annonce la pluie.”
42 While Ahab went back to eat and drink, Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel and bowed down to theground, putting his face between his knees.	42 Akab remonta pour manger et boire tandis qu’Élie montait jusqu’au sommet du Carmel. Là il s’inclina et mit son visage entre ses genoux,
43 'Now go up', he told his servant, 'and look out to sea.' He went up and looked. 'There is nothing at al ,'he said. Seven times Elijah told him to go back.	43 puis il dit à son serviteur: “Monte et regarde du côté de la mer.” Le garçon regarda et il dit: “Il n’y a rien.” Élie lui dit: “Retourne une seconde fois!”
44 The seventh time, the servant said, 'Now there is a cloud, smal as a man's hand, rising from the sea.'Elijah said, 'Go and say to Ahab, "Harness the chariot and go down before the rain stops you." '	44 Quand il retourna pour la septième fois, un petit nuage montait de la mer, pas plus grand que la paume de la main. Élie dit alors: “Va dire à Akab d’atteler son char et de descendre, sinon la pluie va le surprendre.”
45 And with that the sky grew dark with cloud and storm, and rain fel in torrents. Ahab mounted hischariot and made for Jezreel.	45 En peu de temps le ciel devint tout sombre, le vent chassait les nuages et la pluie se mit à tomber à verse; Akab monta sur son char et s’en retourna à Yizréel.
46 But the hand of Yahweh had come on Elijah and, hitching up his clothes, he ran ahead of Ahab al theway to Jezreel.	46 Alors la main de Yahvé se posa sur Élie: il serra sa ceinture et courut devant Akab jusqu’à l’entrée de Yizréel.
