1 A long time went by, and the word of Yahweh came to Elijah in the third year, 'Go, present yourself toAhab, and I wil send rain on the country.'	1 Dopo molto tempo la parola del Signore fu rivolta ad Elia, nel terzo anno, in questi termini: "Va' e mostrati ad Acab, perché invierò la pioggia sulla faccia della terra".
2 So Elijah set off to present himself to Ahab. As the famine was particularly severe in Samaria,	2 Elia andò a mostrarsi ad Acab, quando a Samaria la carestia era molto grave.
3 Ahab summoned Obadiah, the master of the palace -- Obadiah held Yahweh in great reverence:	3 Acab chiamò Abdia, sovrintendente del palazzo, che era molto timorato di Dio.
4 when Jezebel was butchering the prophets of Yahweh, Obadiah took a hundred of them and hid them,fifty at a time, in a cave, and kept them provided with food and water-	4 Infatti quando Gezabele sterminò i profeti del Signore, Abdia prese cento profeti, li nascose a cinquanta a cinquanta nella caverna e li rifornì di pane ed acqua.
5 and Ahab said to Obadiah, 'Come along, we must scour the country, all the springs and all the ravinesin the hope of finding grass to keep horses and mules alive, or we shall have to slaughter some of our stock.'	5 Acab disse ad Abdia: "Vieni, percorriamo il paese ad ispezionare tutte le sorgenti d'acqua e tutti i torrenti; forse troveremo dell'erba e potremo conservare in vita cavalli e muli e non dovremo uccidere il bestiame".
6 They divided the country for the purpose of their survey; Ahab went one way by himself and Obadiahwent another way by himself.	6 Si divisero il paese da percorrere; Acab se ne andò da solo per una strada e Abdia se ne andò da solo per un'altra.
7 While Obadiah was on his way, whom should he meet but Elijah. Recognising him he fel on his faceand said, 'So it is you, my lord Elijah!'	7 Mentre Abdia era in cammino, ecco che gli venne incontro Elia; riconosciutolo, si prostrò con la faccia a terra e gli disse: "Sei proprio tu il mio signore, Elia?".
8 'Yes,' he replied, 'go and tel your master, "Elijah is here." '	8 Gli rispose: "Sono io! Va' a dire al tuo signore: ecco Elia!".
9 But Obadiah said, 'What sin I have committed, for you to put your servant into Ahab's power and causemy death?	9 Quegli replicò: "Che peccato ho commesso, perché tu dia il tuo servo in mano di Acab per farmi morire?
10 As Yahweh your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my master has not sent in search ofyou; and when they said, "He is not there," he made the kingdom or nation swear an oath that they did not knowwhere you were.	10 Com'è vero che vive il Signore, tuo Dio, non c'è nazione e regno dove il mio signore non abbia mandato a cercarti; quando dicevano: "Non è qui", egli faceva giurare il regno e la nazione che non ti avevano trovato.
11 And now you say to me, "Go and tel your master: Elijah is here."	11 E ora tu mi dici: "Va' a dire al tuo padrone: ecco Elia!";
12 But as soon as I leave you, the spirit of Yahweh wil carry you away and I shal not know where; I shalgo and tel Ahab; he wil not be able to find you, and then he wil kil me. Yet from his youth your servant hasrevered Yahweh.	12 ma quando mi sarò allontanato da te, lo spirito del Signore ti trasporterà non so dove; cosicché io andrò ad annunciarti ad Acab e questi, non trovandoti, mi ucciderà. Eppure il tuo servo teme il Signore fin dalla giovinezza!
13 Has no one told my lord what I did when Jezebel butchered the prophets of Yahweh, how I hid ahundred of them in a cave, fifty at a time, and kept them provided with food and water?	13 Non hanno riferito al mio signore ciò che ho fatto quando Gezabele sterminò i profeti del Signore e nascosi cento profeti del Signore, a cinquanta a cinquanta, nella grotta e li rifornii di pane e di acqua?
14 And now you say to me, "Go and tel your master: Elijah is here." Why, he wil kill me!'	14 Ed ora tu mi dici: "Va' a dire al tuo signore: ecco Elia!"; così egli mi ucciderà!".
15 Elijah replied, 'As Yahweh Sabaoth lives, whom I serve, I shal present myself to him today!'	15 Elia rispose: "Com'è vero che vive il Signore degli eserciti, ch'io servo: oggi stesso mi mostrerò a lui!".
16 Obadiah went to find Ahab and tel him the news, and Ahab then went to find Elijah.	16 Abdia andò incontro al re e gli riferì la cosa; e Acab andò incontro a Elia.
17 When he saw Elijah, Ahab said, 'So there you are, you scourge of Israel!'	17 Appena Acab vide Elia, gli disse: "Sei tu colui che mette sottosopra Israele?".
18 'Not I,' he replied, 'I am not the scourge of Israel, you and your family are; because you have desertedYahweh and fol owed Baal.	18 Ma quegli replicò: "Non sono io che metto sottosopra Israele, bensì tu e la casa di tuo padre, perché avete abbandonato i precetti del Signore e tu sei andato dietro ai Baal.
19 Now give orders for all Israel to gather round me on Mount Carmel, and also the four hundredprophets of Baal who eat at Jezebel's table.'	19 Or dunque chiama a raccolta presso di me sul monte Carmelo tutto Israele e i quattrocentocinquanta profeti di Baal che mangiano alla mensa di Gezabele".
20 Ahab cal ed al Israel together and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel.	20 Acab mandò a chiamare tutti i figli d'Israele e radunò i profeti sul monte Carmelo.
21 Elijah stepped out in front of al the people. 'How long', he said, 'do you mean to hobble first on oneleg then on the other? If Yahweh is God, follow him; if Baal, fol ow him.' But the people had nothing to say.	21 Allora Elia s'avvicinò a tutto il popolo e disse: "Fino a quando voi barcollerete fra due parti? Se il Signore è Dio, andategli dietro; se lo è Baal, andate dietro a lui". Il popolo non gli rispose neppure una parola.
22 Elijah then said to them, 'I, I alone, am left as a prophet of Yahweh, while the prophets of Baal arefour hundred and fifty.	22 Elia riprese a dire al popolo: "Solo io sono rimasto come profeta del Signore, mentre i profeti di Baal sono quattrocentocinquanta!
23 Let two bulls be given us; let them choose one for themselves, dismember it but not set fire to it. I inmy turn shal prepare the other bul , but not set fire to it.	23 Dateci due giovenchi: essi se ne scelgano uno, lo facciano a pezzi e lo mettano sulla legna, senza appiccarvi il fuoco. Io preparerò l'altro giovenco, lo metterò sulla legna e non vi appiccherò il fuoco.
24 You must cal on the name of your god, and I shal cal on the name of Yahweh; the god who answerswith fire, is God indeed.' The people al answered, 'Agreed!'	24 Voi invocherete il nome del vostro dio e io invocherò quello del Signore. Il dio che risponderà con il fuoco, quegli è Dio". L'intero popolo rispose: "Ben detto!".
25 Elijah then said to the prophets of Baal, 'Choose one bul and begin, for there are more of you. Call onthe name of your god but light no fire.'	25 Allora Elia disse ai profeti di Baal: "Sceglietevi un giovenco e agite voi per primi, perché siete più numerosi. Invocate il nome del vostro dio, senza però appiccare il fuoco".
26 They took the bul and prepared it, and from morning to midday they called on the name of Baal. 'OBaal, answer us!' they cried, but there was no voice, no answer, as they performed their hobbling dance roundthe altar which they had made.	26 Essi presero il giovenco, lo prepararono e poi invocarono il nome di Baal dal mattino fino a mezzogiorno dicendo: "O Baal, rispondici!". Non ci fu né voce né risposta. Frattanto essi danzavano, piegando il ginocchio davanti all'altare che avevano costruito.
27 Midday came, and Elijah mocked them. 'Cal louder,' he said, 'for he is a god: he is preoccupied or heis busy, or he has gone on a journey; perhaps he is asleep and needs to be woken up!'	27 A mezzogiorno Elia incominciò a burlarsi di loro dicendo: "Gridate più forte perché egli è certamente dio, però forse è occupato o ha degli affari o è in viaggio; forse dorme e deve essere svegliato!".
28 So they shouted louder and gashed themselves, as their custom was, with swords and spears untilthe blood flowed down them.	28 Essi si misero a gridare più forte e a farsi incisioni con spade e lance, secondo la loro usanza, fino a versare sangue.
29 Midday passed, and they ranted on until the time when the offering is presented; but there was novoice, no answer, no sign of attention.	29 Passato mezzogiorno, continuarono a smaniare fino al tempo di offrire l'oblazione; ma non si ebbe né voce né risposta né segno d'attenzione.
30 Then Elijah said to al the people, 'Come over to me,' and al the people came over to him. Herepaired Yahweh's altar which had been torn down.	30 Allora Elia disse a tutto il popolo: "Avvicinatevi a me". E tutto il popolo gli si avvicinò ed egli ricostruì l'altare del Signore ch'era stato demolito.
31 Elijah took twelve stones, corresponding to the number of tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom theword of Yahweh had come, 'Israel is to be your name,'	31 Prese infatti dodici pietre, in corrispondenza del numero delle tribù dei figli di Giacobbe, cui il Signore aveva detto: "Il tuo nome è Israele!".
32 and built an altar in the name of Yahweh. Round the altar he dug a trench of a size to hold twomeasures of seed.	32 Con le pietre costruì l'altare al nome del Signore e vi scavò intorno un canale che conteneva due misure di frumento.
33 He then arranged the wood, dismembered the bull, and laid it on the wood.	33 Accatastò la legna, fece a pezzi il giovenco e lo pose sopra la legna.
34 Then he said, 'Fil four jars with water and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood.' They did this.He said, 'Do it a second time;' they did it a second time. He said, 'Do it a third time;' they did it a third time.	34 Poi ordinò: "Riempite quattro brocche di acqua e versatela sopra l'olocausto e sulla legna". Essi fecero così. Di nuovo ordinò: "Fatelo per la seconda volta"; essi lo fecero. Aggiunse ancora: "Fatelo per la terza volta"; essi lo fecero.
35 The water flowed round the altar until even the trench itself was ful of water.	35 L'acqua si sparse intorno all'altare e riempì persino il canale.
36 At the time when the offering is presented, Elijah the prophet stepped forward. 'Yahweh, God ofAbraham, Isaac and Israel,' he said, 'let them know today that you are God in Israel, and that I am your servant,that I have done all these things at your command.	36 Giunto il tempo di offrire l'oblazione, il profeta Elia s'avvicinò e disse: "Signore, Dio di Abramo, d'Isacco e d'Israele, oggi appaia che tu sei Dio in Israele, che io sono tuo servo e che dietro tuo volere ho compiuto tutte queste cose.
37 Answer me, Yahweh, answer me, so that this people may know that you, Yahweh, are God and arewinning back their hearts.'	37 Esaudiscimi, o Signore, esaudiscimi e questo popolo saprà che tu, o Signore, sei Dio e che converti il loro cuore".
38 Then Yahweh's fire fel and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and licked up the water in thetrench.	38 Cadde il fuoco del Signore che consumò l'olocausto, la legna, le pietre e la polvere e prosciugò l'acqua ch'era nel canale.
39 When al the people saw this they fell on their faces. 'Yahweh is God,' they cried, 'Yahweh is God!'	39 A tal vista, tutto il popolo si prostrò con la faccia per terra esclamando: "Il Signore è Dio, il Signore è Dio!".
40 Elijah said, 'Seize the prophets of Baal: do not let one of them escape.' They seized them, and Elijahtook them down to the Kishon, and there he slaughtered them.	40 Elia allora ordinò: "Prendete i profeti di Baal, non ne scampi neppure uno". Elia li fece discendere al torrente Kison dove li sgozzò.
41 Elijah said to Ahab, 'Go back now, eat and drink; for I hear the approaching sound of rain.'	41 Poi Elia disse ad Acab: "Risali, mangia e bevi, perché si ode già il rumore della pioggia".
42 While Ahab went back to eat and drink, Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel and bowed down to theground, putting his face between his knees.	42 Mentre Acab risaliva per mangiare e bere, Elia salì sulla cima del Carmelo, si piegò verso terra e pose il volto fra le ginocchia.
43 'Now go up', he told his servant, 'and look out to sea.' He went up and looked. 'There is nothing at al ,'he said. Seven times Elijah told him to go back.	43 Poi disse al suo servo: "Orsù, va' e guarda in direzione del mare!". Quello andò, guardò e disse: "Non c'è nulla!". Elia replicò: "Ritornaci sette volte!".
44 The seventh time, the servant said, 'Now there is a cloud, smal as a man's hand, rising from the sea.'Elijah said, 'Go and say to Ahab, "Harness the chariot and go down before the rain stops you." '	44 Alla settima volta, quegli riferì: "Ecco, una piccola nuvola, come una mano d'uomo, sale dal mare". Disse allora Elia: "Va' a dire ad Acab: "Attacca i cavalli e discendi affinché non ti colga la pioggia".
45 And with that the sky grew dark with cloud and storm, and rain fel in torrents. Ahab mounted hischariot and made for Jezreel.	45 In un baleno il cielo si oscurò per le nubi e il vento e piovve a dirotto. Acab salì sul carro e si recò a Izreèl.
46 But the hand of Yahweh had come on Elijah and, hitching up his clothes, he ran ahead of Ahab al theway to Jezreel.	46 La mano del Signore fu sopra Elia che si cinse i fianchi e corse davanti ad Acab fino all'ingresso di Izreèl.
