NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
Once the king had settled into his palace and Yahweh had granted him rest from al the enemiessurrounding him,1 Factum est autem cum sedisset rex in domo sua, et Dominus dedisset ei requiem undique ab universis inimicis suis,
the king said to the prophet Nathan, 'Look, I am living in a cedar-wood palace, while the ark of God isunder awnings.'2 dixit ad Nathan prophetam : Videsne quod ego habitem in domo cedrina, et arca Dei posita sit in medio pellium ?
Nathan said to the king, 'Go and do whatever you have in mind, for Yahweh is with you.'3 Dixitque Nathan ad regem : Omne quod est in corde tuo, vade, fac : quia Dominus tecum est.
But that very night, the word of Yahweh came to Nathan:4 Factum est autem in illa nocte : et ecce sermo Domini ad Nathan, dicens :
'Go and tell my servant David, "Yahweh says this: Are you to build me a temple for me to live in?5 Vade, et loquere ad servum meum David : Hæc dicit Dominus : Numquid tu ædificabis mihi domum ad habitandum ?
I have never lived in a house from the day when I brought the Israelites out of Egypt until today, buthave kept travel ing with a tent for shelter.6 Neque enim habitavi in domo ex die illa, qua eduxi filios Israël de terra Ægypti, usque in diem hanc : sed ambulabam in tabernaculo, et in tentorio.
In al my travels with al the Israelites, did I say to any of the judges of Israel, whom I had commanded to shepherd my people Israel: Why do you not build me a cedar-wood temple?"7 Per cuncta loca quæ transivi cum omnibus filiis Israël, numquid loquens locutus sum ad unam de tribubus Israël, cui præcepi ut pasceret populum meum Israël, dicens : Quare non ædificastis mihi domum cedrinam ?
This is what you must say to my servant David, "Yahweh Sabaoth says this: I took you from thepasture, from following the sheep, to be leader of my people Israel;8 Et nunc hæc dices servo meo David : Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum : Ego tuli te de pascuis sequentem greges, ut esses dux super populum meum Israël :
I have been with you wherever you went; I have got rid of al your enemies for you. I am going to makeyour fame as great as the fame of the greatest on earth.9 et fui tecum in omnibus ubicumque ambulasti, et interfeci universos inimicos tuos a facie tua : fecique tibi nomen grande, juxta nomen magnorum qui sunt in terra.
I am going to provide a place for my people Israel; I shall plant them there, and there they wil live andnever be disturbed again; nor wil they be oppressed by the wicked any more, as they were in former times10 Et ponam locum populo meo Israël, et plantabo eum, et habitabit sub eo, et non turbabitur amplius : nec addent filii iniquitatis ut affligant eum sicut prius,
ever since the time when I instituted judges to govern my people Israel; and I shal grant you rest fromal your enemies. Yahweh furthermore tel s you that he wil make you a dynasty.11 ex die qua constitui judices super populum meum Israël : et requiem dabo tibi ab omnibus inimicis tuis : prædicitque tibi Dominus quod domum faciat tibi Dominus.
And when your days are over and you fal asleep with your ancestors, I shal appoint your heir, yourown son to succeed you (and I shal make his sovereignty secure.12 Cumque completi fuerint dies tui, et dormieris cum patribus tuis, suscitabo semen tuum post te, quod egredietur de utero tuo, et firmabo regnum ejus.
He wil build a temple for my name) and I shal make his royal throne secure for ever.13 Ipse ædificabit domum nomini meo, et stabiliam thronum regni ejus usque in sempiternum.
I shal be a father to him and he a son to me; if he does wrong, I shal punish him with a rod such asmen use, with blows such as mankind gives.14 Ego ero ei in patrem, et ipse erit mihi in filium : qui si inique aliquid gesserit, arguam eum in virga virorum, et in plagis filiorum hominum.
But my faithful love wil never be withdrawn from him as I withdrew it from Saul, whom I removed frombefore you.15 Misericordiam autem meam non auferam ab eo, sicut abstuli a Saul, quem amovi a facie mea.
Your dynasty and your sovereignty will ever stand firm before me and your throne be for ever secure."'16 Et fidelis erit domus tua, et regnum tuum usque in æternum ante faciem tuam, et thronus tuus erit firmus jugiter.
Nathan related al these words and this whole revelation to David.17 Secundum omnia verba hæc, et juxta universam visionem istam, sic locutus est Nathan ad David.
King David then went in, sat down in Yahweh's presence and said: 'Who am I, Lord Yahweh, and whatis my lineage, for you to have led me as far as this?18 Ingressus est autem rex David, et sedit coram Domino, et dixit : Quis ego sum, Domine Deus, et quæ domus mea, quia adduxisti me hucusque ?
Yet, to you, Lord Yahweh, this seemed too little, and now you extend your promises for your servant'sfamily into the distant future. Such is human destiny, Lord Yahweh.19 Sed et hoc parum visum est in conspectu tuo, Domine Deus, nisi loquereris etiam de domo servi tui in longinquum : ista est enim lex Adam, Domine Deus.
What more can David say to you, since you, Lord Yahweh, know al about your servant?20 Quid ergo addere poterit adhuc David, ut loquatur ad te ? tu enim scis servum tuum, Domine Deus.
Because of your promise and since you were so inclined, you have had the generosity to reveal this toyour servant.21 Propter verbum tuum, et secundum cor tuum, fecisti omnia magnalia hæc, ita ut notum faceres servo tuo.
That is why you are great, Lord Yahweh; there is no one like you, no God but you alone, as everythingthat we have heard confirms.22 Idcirco magnificatus es, Domine Deus, quia non est similis tui, neque est deus extra te, in omnibus quæ audivimus auribus nostris.
Is there another people on earth like your people, like Israel, whom a god proceeded to redeem, tomake them his people and to make a name for himself by performing great and terrible things on their behalf, bydriving out nations and their gods before his people?
for you constituted your people Israel your own people for ever and you, Yahweh, became their God.24 Firmasti enim tibi populum tuum Israël in populum sempiternum : et tu, Domine Deus, factus es eis in Deum.
'Now, Yahweh God, may the promise which you have made for your servant and for his family standfirm forever as you have said,25 Nunc ergo Domine Deus, verbum quod locutus es super servum tuum, et super domum ejus, suscita in sempiternum : et fac sicut locutus es,
so that your name wil be exalted for ever and people wil say, "Israel's God is Yahweh Sabaoth." Yourservant David's dynasty wil be secure before you,26 ut magnificetur nomen tuum usque in sempiternum, atque dicatur : Dominus exercituum, Deus super Israël. Et domus servi tui David erit stabilita coram Domino,
since you, Yahweh Sabaoth, the God of Israel, have disclosed to your servant, "I am going to buildyou a dynasty." Hence, your servant has ventured to offer this prayer to you.27 quia tu, Domine exercituum Deus Israël, revelasti aurem servi tui, dicens : Domum ædificabo tibi : propterea invenit servus tuus cor suum ut oraret te oratione hac.
Yes, Lord Yahweh, you are God indeed, your words are true and you have made this generouspromise to your servant.28 Nunc ergo Domine Deus, tu es Deus, et verba tua erunt vera : locutus es enim ad servum tuum bona hæc.
What is more, you have deigned to bless your servant's dynasty, so that it may remain for ever beforeyou; for you, Lord Yahweh, have spoken; and may your servant's dynasty be blessed with your blessing forever.'29 Incipe ergo, et benedic domui servi tui, ut sit in sempiternum coram te : quia tu, Domine Deus, locutus es, et benedictione tua benedicetur domus servi tui in sempiternum.
