1 After this David consulted Yahweh, asking, 'Shal I go up to one of the towns of Judah?' Yahwehreplied, 'Go up!' 'Which one shal I go to?' David asked. 'To Hebron,' was the reply.	1 Avvenuti questi fatti, David consultò il Signore, dicendo: « Devo salire in una delle città di Giuda? » E il Signore gli rispose: « Sali ». « In quale devo salire? » chiese David. Il Signore gli rispose: « Ebron ».
2 So David went up, with his two wives Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail widow of Nabal of Carmel.	2 Allora David vi salì colle sue mogli, Achinoam Iezraelita e Abigail già moglie di Nabal del Carmelo.
3 In addition David brought up the men who were with him, each with his family, and they settled in thetowns of Hebron.	3 David vi fece salire anche la gente che era con lui, ciascuno colla sua famiglia, e li fece abitare nei villaggi di Ebron.
4 The men of Judah came, and there they anointed David as king of the House of Judah. They told Davidthat the people of Jabesh in Gilead had given Saul burial,	4 Venuti poi gli uomini di Giuda, ivi unsero David come re sopra la casa di Giuda. Essendo stato riferito a David che gli uomini di Iabes di Galaad avevan data sepoltura a Saul.
5 so David sent messengers to the people of Jabesh in Gilead. 'May you be blessed by Yahweh,' he said,'for showing this faithful love to Saul your lord, and for burying him.	5 David inviò dei messi agli uomini di Iabes di Galaad, e fece dir loro: « Siate benedetti davanti al Signore, per aver fatta quest'opera di misericordia verso il vostro signore Saul e per averlo seppellito,
6 And now may Yahweh show faithful love and constancy towards you! I too shall treat you wel becauseyou have done this.	6 Certamente il Signore vi renderà misericordia e verità; ma anch'io vi devo ringraziare, perchè avete fatto quest'azione.
7 And now take courage and be men of valour. Saul your lord is dead, but the House of Judah hasanointed me to be their king.'	7 Or dunque prendan vigore le vostre mani e siate forti, perchè, sebbene sia morto il signor vostro Saul, mi ha unto per suo re la casa di Giuda ».
8 Abner son of Ner, Saul's army commander, had taken Ishbaal son of Saul and brought him over toMahanaim.	8 Intanto Abner, figlio di Ner, capo dell'esercito di Saul, aveva preso Isboset figlio di Saul, e dopo averlo menato per il campo,
9 He had made him king of Gilead, of the Asherites, of Jezreel, of Ephraim, of Benjamin and indeed of allIsrael.	9 lo aveva costituito re sopra Galaad, Gessur, Iezrael, Efraim, Beniamino, e sopra tutto Israele.
10 Ishbaal son of Saul was forty years old when he became king of Israel, and he reigned for two years.Only the House of Judah supported David.	10 Isboset figlio di Saul aveva quarant'anni quando cominciò a regnare sopra Israele, e regnò due anni, mentre David era seguito soltanto dalla casa di Giuda.
11 The length of David's reign over Judah in Hebron was seven years and six months.	11 Il tempo che David, dimorando a Ebron, regnò sulla casa di Giuda, fu di sette anni e sei mesi.
12 Abner son of Ner, with the retainers of Ishbaal son of Saul, marched out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.	12 Uscito dal campo coi servi d'Isboset, figlio di Saul, Abner figlio di Ner andò a Gabaon.
13 Joab son of Zeruiah, with David's retainers, also took the field, encountering them at the pool ofGibeon. There they halted, one party on one side of the pool, and the other opposite.	13 Allora Gioab, figlio di Sarvia, e gli uomini di David uscirono verso di loro e l'incontrarono alla vasca di Gabaon, ove si schierarono di faccia, gli uni da un lato della vasca e gli altri dall'altro lato.
14 Abner then said to Joab, 'Let the men come forward and fight it out between us!' Joab replied, 'Letthem come forward.'	14 E Abner disse a Gioab: « Si levino dei giovanotti e si battano in nostra presenza ». Gioab rispose: « Si levino pure».
15 So they came forward and were numbered off, twelve from Benjamin for Ishbaal son of Saul, andtwelve of David's retainers.	15 Si levarono adunque e si avanzarono, dodici di Beniamino dalla parte d'Isboset, figlio di Saul, e dodici tra gli uomini di David.
16 Each caught his opponent by the head and drove his sword into his side; and thus they al felltogether. Hence the place was cal ed the Field of Sides; it is at Gibeon.	16 Ma avendo ciascuno di essi preso per la testa il suo avversario, ficcata la spada nel fianco di lui, caddero tutti insieme, e a quel luogo, che è in Gabaon, fu dato il nome di Campo dei Forti.
17 That day a very fierce battle took place, and Abner and the men of Israel were beaten by David'sretainers.	17 In quel giorno fu combattuta una feroce battaglia, e Abner cogli uomini d'Israele fu messo in fuga dalla gente di David.
18 The three sons of Zeruiah were there, Joab, Abishai, and Asahel. Now Asahel could run like a wildgazel e.	18 Là si trovavano i tre figli di Sarvia: Gioab, Abisai e Asael. Or Asael, che era un corridore velocissimo come un capriolo delle selve,
19 Asahel chased Abner, not swerving to the right or left from pursuing him.	19 si mise a dar dietro a Abner. Or siccome lo seguiva senza posa, senza piegare nè a destra nè a sinistra,
20 Abner turned and said, 'Asahel, is that you?' He replied, 'It is.'	20 Abner si voltò indietro e disse: « Sei tu Asael? » Ed egli rispose: « Son io ».
21 Abner said, 'Turn to your right or your left, catch one of the men and take his spoil!' But Asahel wouldnot break off the pursuit.	21 E Abner a lui: « Va a destra o a sinistra, ad afferrare uno di questi giovanotti, e prenditi le sue spoglie ». Ma Asael non volle cessar d'incalzarlo.
22 Again Abner spoke to Asahel, 'Stop following me, unless you want me to strike you to the ground; andthen how could I look your brother Joab in the face?'	22 Abner disse di nuovo ad Asael: « Vattene, cessa di tenermi dietro per non costringermi a conficcarti in terra, e allora non potrò più alzar la mia faccia verso il tuo fratello Gioab ».
23 But he refused to be diverted, so Abner struck him in the belly with the butt of his spear so that theshaft came out through his back; and he fell at his feet and died on the spot. On coming to the place whereAsahel had fal en and died, everyone halted.	23 Ma Asael disprezzò l'avviso e non volle andarsene. Allora Abner lo colpì nell'inguine colla parte inferiore della lancia, che lo passò da parte a parte. Asael morì nello stesso posto; e tutti quelli che passavan dal luogo ove giaceva morto Asael, si fermavano.
24 Joab and Abishai took up the pursuit of Abner and at sunset reached the Hil of Ammah, which is tothe east of Giah on the road through the desert of Gibeon.	24 Intanto Gioab e Abisai inseguivano Abner che fuggiva, e al tramonto del sole giunsero alla collina dell'Acquedotto, che è di faccia alla valle, sulla strada del deserto di Gabaon.
25 The Benjaminites gathered in close formation behind Abner and halted on the top of a hil .	25 Ma i figli di Beniamino si riordinarono intorno ad Abner e serrati in un solo esercito, si fermarono sulla cima d'una collina.
26 Abner cal ed out to Joab, 'Is the sword to go on devouring for ever? Surely you see that this can onlyend in bitterness? How long wil it be before you order those people to stop pursuing their brothers?'	26 Ed Abner gridò a Gioab e disse: « Infierirà dunque fino allo sterminio la tua spada? Non sai che la disperazione è pericolosa? Quanto starai a dire al popolo di cessare dall'inseguire i suoi fratelli? »
27 Joab replied, 'As Yahweh lives, if you had not spoken, these men would not have given up the pursuitof their brothers until morning.'	27 Gioab rispose: « Viva il Signore! Se tu avessi parlato fin dal mattino il popolo avrebbe cessato di perseguitare il suo fratello ».
28 Joab then sounded the trumpet and all the troops halted; they pursued Israel no further and fought nomore.	28 Gioab sonò adunque la tromba, e tutto l'esercito si fermò: non inseguirono più Israele nè continuarono la battaglia.
29 Al that night Abner and his men made their way through the Arabah; they crossed the Jordan and,marching throughout the morning, came to Mahanaim.	29 Abner colla sua gente camminò tutta quella notte per le pianure e, passato il Giordano e traversata tutta Betoron, giunse al campo.
30 Joab, having stopped pursuing Abner, mustered the whole contingent; David's retainers had lostnineteen men in addition to Asahel,	30 Gioab, lasciato andare Abner, tornò indietro e radunò tutto il popolo: della gente di David mancarono diciannove uomini, senza Asael;
31 but had killed three hundred and sixty of Benjamin, Abner's men.	31 mentre la gente di David percosse e fece morire trecento sessanta uomini dei Beniaminiti e degli altri che eran con Abner.
32 They took up Asahel and buried him in his father's tomb, which is at Bethlehem. Joab and his menthen marched throughout the night, reaching Hebron at daybreak.	32 Tolto poi Asael, lo seppellirono nel sepolcro di suo padre in Betlem. Gioab e gli uomini ch'eran con lui marciarono tutta la notte e al primo crepuscolo giunsero a Ebron.
