NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 After this David consulted Yahweh, asking, 'Shal I go up to one of the towns of Judah?' Yahwehreplied, 'Go up!' 'Which one shal I go to?' David asked. 'To Hebron,' was the reply.	1 Dopo questi fatti, Davide consultò il Signore dicendo: "Posso salire in una città di Giuda?". Il Signore gli rispose: "Sali!". Davide chiese: "Dove devo salire?". Gli rispose: "A Ebron!".
2 So David went up, with his two wives Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail widow of Nabal of Carmel.	2 Allora Davide vi andò con le sue due mogli, Achinoàm di Izreèl e Abigail, già moglie di Nabal da Carmel.
3 In addition David brought up the men who were with him, each with his family, and they settled in thetowns of Hebron.	3 Davide condusse anche gli uomini che erano con lui, ognuno con la propria famiglia, e si stabilirono nei villaggi di Ebron.
4 The men of Judah came, and there they anointed David as king of the House of Judah. They told Davidthat the people of Jabesh in Gilead had given Saul burial,	4 Vi andarono poi gli uomini di Giuda e là consacrarono Davide re sulla casa di Giuda. 5 so David sent messengers to the people of Jabesh in Gilead. 'May you be blessed by Yahweh,' he said,'for showing this faithful love to Saul your lord, and for burying him.	5 Allora Davide mandò messaggeri agli uomini di Iabes di Galaad a dir loro: "Benedetti dal Signore, voi che avete fatto quest'opera pietosa verso il vostro signore, verso Saul, dandogli sepoltura!
6 And now may Yahweh show faithful love and constancy towards you! I too shall treat you wel becauseyou have done this.	6 Ora il Signore vi ricompensi con perenni opere di bontà; anch'io vi farò del bene, perché avete compiuto una tale azione.
7 And now take courage and be men of valour. Saul your lord is dead, but the House of Judah hasanointed me to be their king.'	7 Ora rinvigorite le vostre mani e siate uomini forti, perché se Saul, vostro signore, è morto, la casa di Giuda ha consacrato me suo re".
8 Abner son of Ner, Saul's army commander, had taken Ishbaal son of Saul and brought him over toMahanaim.	8 Intanto Abner, figlio di Ner, capo dell'esercito di Saul, aveva preso Is-Baal, figlio di Saul, lo aveva condotto a Macanàim
9 He had made him king of Gilead, of the Asherites, of Jezreel, of Ephraim, of Benjamin and indeed of allIsrael.	9 e lo aveva costituito re sul Galaad, sugli Asuriti, su Izreèl, su Efraim, su Beniamino e su tutto Israele.
10 Ishbaal son of Saul was forty years old when he became king of Israel, and he reigned for two years.Only the House of Judah supported David.	10 Is-Baal, figlio di Saul, aveva quarant'anni quando cominciò a regnare su Israele e regnò due anni. Solo la casa di Giuda seguiva Davide.
11 The length of David's reign over Judah in Hebron was seven years and six months.	11 Il tempo che Davide regnò a Ebron sulla casa di Giuda fu di sette anni e sei mesi.
12 Abner son of Ner, with the retainers of Ishbaal son of Saul, marched out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.	12 Abner, figlio di Ner, uscì con gli uomini di Is-Baal, figlio di Saul, da Macanàim alla volta di Gabaon.
13 Joab son of Zeruiah, with David's retainers, also took the field, encountering them at the pool ofGibeon. There they halted, one party on one side of the pool, and the other opposite.	13 Anche Ioab, figlio di Zeruià, uscì con gli uomini di Davide e li incontrò alla piscina di Gabaon. Si fermarono gli uni di là e gli altri di qua dalla piscina.
14 Abner then said to Joab, 'Let the men come forward and fight it out between us!' Joab replied, 'Letthem come forward.'	14 Abner disse a Ioab: "Si presentino dei giovani per lottare alla nostra presenza!". Ioab rispose: "Si presentino pure!".
15 So they came forward and were numbered off, twelve from Benjamin for Ishbaal son of Saul, andtwelve of David's retainers.	15 Si fecero avanti e sfilarono in numero di dodici dalla parte di Beniamino e di Is-Baal, figlio di Saul, e dodici degli uomini di Davide.
16 Each caught his opponent by the head and drove his sword into his side; and thus they al felltogether. Hence the place was cal ed the Field of Sides; it is at Gibeon.	16 Ognuno afferrò il suo avversario per la testa e conficcò la spada nel fianco dell'altro. Così caddero insieme e quel luogo fu chiamato Campo dei Fianchi: si trova a Gabaon.
17 That day a very fierce battle took place, and Abner and the men of Israel were beaten by David'sretainers.	17 Ci fu in quel giorno una battaglia estremamente dura; Abner rimase sconfitto insieme con gl'Israeliti di fronte agli uomini di Davide.
18 The three sons of Zeruiah were there, Joab, Abishai, and Asahel. Now Asahel could run like a wildgazel e.	18 Erano presenti anche i tre figli di Zeruià: Ioab, Abisài e Asaèl. Asaèl era veloce come una gazzella selvatica.
19 Asahel chased Abner, not swerving to the right or left from pursuing him.	19 Asaèl si mise a inseguire Abner senza deviare né a destra né a sinistra dietro Abner.
20 Abner turned and said, 'Asahel, is that you?' He replied, 'It is.'	20 Abner voltatosi indietro, disse: "Sei tu Asaèl?". Rispose: "Sono io!".
21 Abner said, 'Turn to your right or your left, catch one of the men and take his spoil!' But Asahel wouldnot break off the pursuit.	21 Gli disse Abner: "Volgiti a destra o a sinistra, afferra uno dei giovani e prenditi le sue spoglie!". Ma Asaèl non volle recedere dall'inseguirlo.
22 Again Abner spoke to Asahel, 'Stop following me, unless you want me to strike you to the ground; andthen how could I look your brother Joab in the face?'	22 Abner insistette ancora dicendo ad Asaèl: "Cessa dall'inseguirmi! Perché ti devo abbattere a terra? E come potrei allora alzare il mio sguardo verso Ioab, tuo fratello?".
23 But he refused to be diverted, so Abner struck him in the belly with the butt of his spear so that theshaft came out through his back; and he fell at his feet and died on the spot. On coming to the place whereAsahel had fal en and died, everyone halted.	23 Ma quello ricusò di allontanarsi. Allora Abner lo percosse al ventre con il retro della lancia e la lancia gli uscì dalla parte opposta, egli cadde lì e morì subito. Chiunque giungeva sul luogo dove era caduto Asaèl ed era morto, si fermava.
24 Joab and Abishai took up the pursuit of Abner and at sunset reached the Hil of Ammah, which is tothe east of Giah on the road through the desert of Gibeon.	24 Ioab e Abisài inseguirono Abner; al calar del sole essi erano giunti fino alla collina di Ammà che è al limite di Ghiach, sulla via del deserto di Gabaon.
25 The Benjaminites gathered in close formation behind Abner and halted on the top of a hil .	25 I Beniaminiti si radunarono intorno ad Abner formando un gruppo compatto e si fermarono sulla cima di una collina.
26 Abner cal ed out to Joab, 'Is the sword to go on devouring for ever? Surely you see that this can onlyend in bitterness? How long wil it be before you order those people to stop pursuing their brothers?'	26 Allora Abner gridò a Ioab: "La spada dovrà forse infierire senza fine? Non sai che il risultato non sarà che amarezza? Fino a quando non dirai al popolo di smettere d'inseguire i propri fratelli?".
27 Joab replied, 'As Yahweh lives, if you had not spoken, these men would not have given up the pursuitof their brothers until morning.'	27 Ioab rispose: "Per la vita di Dio! Se tu non avessi detto niente, certamente il popolo avrebbe desistito domattina dall'inseguire i propri fratelli".
28 Joab then sounded the trumpet and all the troops halted; they pursued Israel no further and fought nomore.	28 Allora Ioab fece suonare il corno e tutto il popolo si arrestò e non inseguì più Israele, smettendo di combattere.
29 Al that night Abner and his men made their way through the Arabah; they crossed the Jordan and,marching throughout the morning, came to Mahanaim.	29 Abner e i suoi uomini marciarono tutta la notte nell'Araba, poi passarono il Giordano, camminarono tutta la mattina e giunsero a Macanàim.
30 Joab, having stopped pursuing Abner, mustered the whole contingent; David's retainers had lostnineteen men in addition to Asahel,	30 Ioab, ritornato dall'inseguimento di Abner, radunò tutta la truppa: mancavano tra gli uomini di Davide diciannove uomini e Asaèl.
31 but had killed three hundred and sixty of Benjamin, Abner's men.	31 Invece gli uomini di Davide fecero strage di Beniamino e degli uomini di Abner: ne morirono trecentosessanta.
32 They took up Asahel and buried him in his father's tomb, which is at Bethlehem. Joab and his menthen marched throughout the night, reaching Hebron at daybreak.	32 Presero Asaèl e lo seppellirono nel sepolcro di suo padre a Betlemme. Poi Ioab e i suoi uomini marciarono tutta la notte e all'alba furono a Ebron.
