1 After this David consulted Yahweh, asking, 'Shal I go up to one of the towns of Judah?' Yahwehreplied, 'Go up!' 'Which one shal I go to?' David asked. 'To Hebron,' was the reply.	1 - Dopo ciò Davide consultò il Signore, dicendo: «Ascenderò io in qualcuna delle città di Giuda?». E il Signore gli rispose: «Ascendi». Soggiunse Davide: «Dove ascenderò?». E il Signore gli rispose: «Ad Ebron».
2 So David went up, with his two wives Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail widow of Nabal of Carmel.	2 Davide allora vi salì colle sue due mogli Achinoam di Jezrael e Abigail di Carmelo, già moglie di Nabal;
3 In addition David brought up the men who were with him, each with his family, and they settled in thetowns of Hebron.	3 condusse seco anche gli uomini che aveva con sè, ciascuno colla sua famiglia e si stabilirono nei sobborghi di Ebron.
4 The men of Judah came, and there they anointed David as king of the House of Judah. They told Davidthat the people of Jabesh in Gilead had given Saul burial,	4 Vennero allora gli uomini di Giuda e unsero quivi Davide, perchè regnasse sulla tribù di Giuda. Fu riferito a Davide che quei di Jabes di Galaad avevano sepolto Saul;
5 so David sent messengers to the people of Jabesh in Gilead. 'May you be blessed by Yahweh,' he said,'for showing this faithful love to Saul your lord, and for burying him.	5 perciò egli spedì messaggeri agli abitanti di Jabes di Galaad per dir loro: «Siate benedetti dal Signore, poichè avete fatto opera di misericordia col vostro padrone Saul e l'avete seppellito.
6 And now may Yahweh show faithful love and constancy towards you! I too shall treat you wel becauseyou have done this.	6 Il Signore vi retribuirà con misericordia e con verità; ma io pure vi sarò grato di quanto avete fatto.
7 And now take courage and be men of valour. Saul your lord is dead, but the House of Judah hasanointed me to be their king.'	7 Si rinvigoriscano le vostre mani e comportatevi da forti: quantunque sia morto il vostro signore Saul, tuttavia la casa di Giuda ha unto me come suo re».
8 Abner son of Ner, Saul's army commander, had taken Ishbaal son of Saul and brought him over toMahanaim.	8 Frattanto Abner figlio di Ner, capo dell'esercito di Saul, prese Isboset figlio di Saul e lo condusse intorno per l'accampamento,
9 He had made him king of Gilead, of the Asherites, of Jezreel, of Ephraim, of Benjamin and indeed of allIsrael.	9 e lo proclamò re di Galaad, di Gessuri, di Jezrael, di Efraim, di Beniamino e di tutto Israele.
10 Ishbaal son of Saul was forty years old when he became king of Israel, and he reigned for two years.Only the House of Judah supported David.	10 Il figlio di Saul Isboset aveva quarant'anni quando cominciò a regnare sopra Israele e regnò due anni, mentre la sola casa di Giuda rimaneva fedele a Davide.
11 The length of David's reign over Judah in Hebron was seven years and six months.	11 Per sette anni e sei mesi Davide dimorò in Ebron, regnando sopra la casa di Giuda.
12 Abner son of Ner, with the retainers of Ishbaal son of Saul, marched out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.	12 Abner figlio di Ner e la gente di Isboset figlio di Saul uscirono dagli accampamenti [per marciare] verso Gabaon.
13 Joab son of Zeruiah, with David's retainers, also took the field, encountering them at the pool ofGibeon. There they halted, one party on one side of the pool, and the other opposite.	13 Anche Joab figlio di Sarvia e la gente di Davide uscirono e s'incontrarono con essi presso la piscina di Gabaon. Colà convenuti, se ne stettero di fronte, gli uni da una parte e gli altri dall'altra parte della piscina.
14 Abner then said to Joab, 'Let the men come forward and fight it out between us!' Joab replied, 'Letthem come forward.'	14 Abner disse a Joab: «Si levino dei giovani e combattano alla nostra presenza». E Joab rispose: «Si levino pure».
15 So they came forward and were numbered off, twelve from Benjamin for Ishbaal son of Saul, andtwelve of David's retainers.	15 Sorsero adunque e si avanzarono in numero [uguale], dodici di Beniamino dalla parte di Isboset figlio di Saul e dodici dei partigiani di Davide.
16 Each caught his opponent by the head and drove his sword into his side; and thus they al felltogether. Hence the place was cal ed the Field of Sides; it is at Gibeon.	16 Poi preso ciascuno il suo avversario per la testa gli cacciò la spada nel fianco e caddero [tutti] a un tempo. Perciò quel luogo ebbe la denominazione di "Campo dei robusti in Gabaon".
17 That day a very fierce battle took place, and Abner and the men of Israel were beaten by David'sretainers.	17 E in quel giorno cominciò un combattimento assai aspro, durante il quale Abner e quei d'Israele furono messi in fuga dai partigiani di Davide.
18 The three sons of Zeruiah were there, Joab, Abishai, and Asahel. Now Asahel could run like a wildgazel e.	18 Eranvi colà i tre figli di Sarvia, Joab, Abisai e Asael. Asael era un corridore velocissimo; sembrava una gazzella selvatica.
19 Asahel chased Abner, not swerving to the right or left from pursuing him.	19 Ora egli si diede a inseguire Abner, e non cessando d'inseguirlo, non si voltava nè a destra nè a sinistra.
20 Abner turned and said, 'Asahel, is that you?' He replied, 'It is.'	20 Essendosi Abner voltato indietro disse: «Non sei tu Asael?», ed egli rispose: «Son io».
21 Abner said, 'Turn to your right or your left, catch one of the men and take his spoil!' But Asahel wouldnot break off the pursuit.	21 Ed Abner gli disse: «Volgiti a destra o a sinistra, afferra uno di questi giovani e prenditi le sue spoglie»; ma Asael non volle cessare dall'inseguirlo.
22 Again Abner spoke to Asahel, 'Stop following me, unless you want me to strike you to the ground; andthen how could I look your brother Joab in the face?'	22 Di nuovo Abner gli disse: «Ritirati, non inseguirmi, e non costringermi a conficcarti in terra. Io non potrei più alzar la mia faccia verso Joab tuo fratello».
23 But he refused to be diverted, so Abner struck him in the belly with the butt of his spear so that theshaft came out through his back; and he fell at his feet and died on the spot. On coming to the place whereAsahel had fal en and died, everyone halted.	23 Ma quegli si rifiutò di dargli retta e non volle cambiar strada; perciò Abner lo colpì nell'inguine con la estremità inferiore della lancia e lo trapassò da parte a parte. [Asael] morì in quello stesso luogo e tutti quelli che passavano pel sito in cui era caduto morto Asael si fermavano.
24 Joab and Abishai took up the pursuit of Abner and at sunset reached the Hil of Ammah, which is tothe east of Giah on the road through the desert of Gibeon.	24 Joab ed Abisai continuarono ad inseguire Abner, che fuggiva e il sole era al tramonto quando giunsero alla Collina dell'acquedotto, che è dirimpetto alla valle sulla strada del deserto di Gabaon.
25 The Benjaminites gathered in close formation behind Abner and halted on the top of a hil .	25 I figliuoli di Beniamino eransi raccolti intorno ad Abner e formavano un nucleo compatto sulla sommità di una collina.
26 Abner cal ed out to Joab, 'Is the sword to go on devouring for ever? Surely you see that this can onlyend in bitterness? How long wil it be before you order those people to stop pursuing their brothers?'	26 Abner allora chiamò Joab e disse: «Infierirà la tua spada fino allo sterminio? Ignori forse quanto sia pericolosa la disperazione? Quando dirai al popolo di smettere d'inseguire i suoi fratelli?».
27 Joab replied, 'As Yahweh lives, if you had not spoken, these men would not have given up the pursuitof their brothers until morning.'	27 Rispose Joab: «Viva il Signore! se tu avessi parlato così stamane, il popolo si sarebbe astenuto dall'inseguire i suoi fratelli».
28 Joab then sounded the trumpet and all the troops halted; they pursued Israel no further and fought nomore.	28 Joab allora fece sonare la tromba e il popolo si arrestò dall'inseguire Israele e dall'impegnarsi in altri combattimenti.
29 Al that night Abner and his men made their way through the Arabah; they crossed the Jordan and,marching throughout the morning, came to Mahanaim.	29 Abner poi e i suoi marciarono per tutta quella notte attraversando la pianura, passarono il Giordano e attraversata tutta Betoron arrivarono all'accampamento.
30 Joab, having stopped pursuing Abner, mustered the whole contingent; David's retainers had lostnineteen men in addition to Asahel,	30 Joab a sua volta lasciato Abner, se ne ritornò e riunito tutto il popolo, [risultò che] tra i seguaci di Davide mancavano diciannove uomini, oltre Asael.
31 but had killed three hundred and sixty of Benjamin, Abner's men.	31 Ma la gente di Davide aveva percossi e uccisi trecentosessanta uomini dei Beniamiti e di quelli che erano con Abner.
32 They took up Asahel and buried him in his father's tomb, which is at Bethlehem. Joab and his menthen marched throughout the night, reaching Hebron at daybreak.	32 Portarono via poi Asael e lo seppellirono nella tomba di suo padre in Betleem. E Joab e gli uomini che erano con lui, camminando tutta la notte, giunsero al primo crepuscolo ad Ebron.
