2 Samuel 2

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 After this David consulted Yahweh, asking, 'Shal I go up to one of the towns of Judah?' Yahwehreplied, 'Go up!' 'Which one shal I go to?' David asked. 'To Hebron,' was the reply.	1 Después de esto, David consultó al Señor, diciendo: «¿Debo subir a una de las ciudades de Judá?». El Señor le respondió: «Sí, sube». David volvió a preguntar: «¿Adónde subiré?». «A Hebrón», le respondió el Señor.
2 So David went up, with his two wives Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail widow of Nabal of Carmel.	2 Entonces David subió con sus dos mujeres, Ajinóam, de Izreel, y Abigail, la mujer de Nabal, el de Carmel.
3 In addition David brought up the men who were with him, each with his family, and they settled in thetowns of Hebron.	3 Hizo subir también a los hombres que lo acompañaban, cada uno con su familia, y se establecieron en las ciudades de Hebrón.
4 The men of Judah came, and there they anointed David as king of the House of Judah. They told Davidthat the people of Jabesh in Gilead had given Saul burial,	4 Luego vinieron los hombres de Judá, y ungieron allí a David como rey sobre la casa de Judá.
5 so David sent messengers to the people of Jabesh in Gilead. 'May you be blessed by Yahweh,' he said,'for showing this faithful love to Saul your lord, and for burying him.	5 él les envió unos mensajeros para decirles: «Que el Señor los bendiga por haber realizado este acto de fidelidad hacia Saúl, su señor, dándole sepultura.
6 And now may Yahweh show faithful love and constancy towards you! I too shall treat you wel becauseyou have done this.	6 Quiera el Señor tratarlos ahora con fidelidad y lealtad. Yo, por mi parte, los trataré con la misma bondad, ya que han obrado así.
7 And now take courage and be men of valour. Saul your lord is dead, but the House of Judah hasanointed me to be their king.'	7 Manténganse firmes y sean valientes, ahora que ha muerto Saúl, su señor, y la casa de Judá me ha ungido a mí para que sea su rey».
8 Abner son of Ner, Saul's army commander, had taken Ishbaal son of Saul and brought him over toMahanaim.	8 Pero Abner, hijo de Ner, jefe del ejército de Saúl, había tomado a Isbaal, hijo de Saúl, y lo había hecho cruzar a Majanaim,
9 He had made him king of Gilead, of the Asherites, of Jezreel, of Ephraim, of Benjamin and indeed of allIsrael.	9 donde lo proclamó rey de Galaad, de los asuritas, de Izreel, de Efraím, de Benjamín, en una palabra, de todo Israel.
10 Ishbaal son of Saul was forty years old when he became king of Israel, and he reigned for two years.Only the House of Judah supported David.	10 Isbaal, hijo de Saúl, tenía cuarenta años cuando comenzó a reinar sobre Israel, y reinó dos años. Sólo la casa de Judá seguía a David.
11 The length of David's reign over Judah in Hebron was seven years and six months.	11 David fue rey de Judá, en Hebrón, durante siete años y seis meses.
12 Abner son of Ner, with the retainers of Ishbaal son of Saul, marched out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.	12 Abner, hijo de Ner, y los servidores de Isbaal, hijo de Saúl, salieron de Majanaim en dirección a Gabaón.
13 Joab son of Zeruiah, with David's retainers, also took the field, encountering them at the pool ofGibeon. There they halted, one party on one side of the pool, and the other opposite.	13 También salieron Joab, hijo de Seruiá, y los servidores de David, y los encontraron junto al estanque de Gabaón. Allí tomaron posiciones, unos a un lado del estanque y otros al otro lado.
14 Abner then said to Joab, 'Let the men come forward and fight it out between us!' Joab replied, 'Letthem come forward.'	14 Abner propuso entonces a Joab: «Que salgan unos cuantos muchachos y midan sus armas delante de nosotros». «Muy bien», replicó Joab.
15 So they came forward and were numbered off, twelve from Benjamin for Ishbaal son of Saul, andtwelve of David's retainers.	15 Ellos se levantaron y avanzaron uno por uno: doce de Benjamín por Isbaal, hijo de Saúl, y doce entre los servidores de David.
16 Each caught his opponent by the head and drove his sword into his side; and thus they al felltogether. Hence the place was cal ed the Field of Sides; it is at Gibeon.	16 Cada uno tomó por la cabeza a su adversario y le hundió la espada en el costado, de manera que cayeron todos al mismo tiempo. Por eso a aquel lugar, que está junto a Gabaón, se lo llamó «Campo de los costados».
17 That day a very fierce battle took place, and Abner and the men of Israel were beaten by David'sretainers.	17 Aquel día se libró un combate muy encarnizado, y los hombres de Israel cayeron derrotados ante los servidores de David.
18 The three sons of Zeruiah were there, Joab, Abishai, and Asahel. Now Asahel could run like a wildgazel e.	18 Allí se encontraban los tres hijos de Seruiá: Joab, Abisai y Asael. Asael, que corría como una gacela del campo,
19 Asahel chased Abner, not swerving to the right or left from pursuing him.	19 se lanzó en persecución de Abner, sin desviarse ni a la derecha ni a la izquierda.
20 Abner turned and said, 'Asahel, is that you?' He replied, 'It is.'	20 Abner se dio vuelta y dijo: «¿Eres tú, Asael?». Sí, soy yo», respondió él.
21 Abner said, 'Turn to your right or your left, catch one of the men and take his spoil!' But Asahel wouldnot break off the pursuit.	21 Abner siguió diciendo: «Desvíate a la derecha o a la izquierda, agarra a uno de los muchachos y quédate con sus despojos». Pero él no quiso dejar de perseguirlo.
22 Again Abner spoke to Asahel, 'Stop following me, unless you want me to strike you to the ground; andthen how could I look your brother Joab in the face?'	22 Abner le insistió, diciendo: «¡Deja de seguirme! ¿O tendré que dejarte tendido de un golpe? ¿Y cómo podría luego mirar de frente a tu hermano Joab?».
23 But he refused to be diverted, so Abner struck him in the belly with the butt of his spear so that theshaft came out through his back; and he fell at his feet and died on the spot. On coming to the place whereAsahel had fal en and died, everyone halted.	23 Pero Asael no quiso apartarse, y Abner lo hirió en el bajo vientre con la punta trasera de su lanza. Esta le salió por detrás, y él cayó muerto allí mismo. Todos los que llegaban al sitio donde Asael había caído muerto, se paraban.
24 Joab and Abishai took up the pursuit of Abner and at sunset reached the Hil of Ammah, which is tothe east of Giah on the road through the desert of Gibeon.	24 Joab y Abisai persiguieron a Abner. Y al ponerse el sol, llegaron a la colina de Ammá, que está al este de Guíaj, sobre el camino del páramo de Gabaón.
25 The Benjaminites gathered in close formation behind Abner and halted on the top of a hil .	25 Los benjaminitas se concentraron detrás de Abner, formando un grupo bien compacto, y se apostaron en la cima de una colina.
26 Abner cal ed out to Joab, 'Is the sword to go on devouring for ever? Surely you see that this can onlyend in bitterness? How long wil it be before you order those people to stop pursuing their brothers?'	26 Entonces Abner gritó a Joab: «¿Terminará alguna vez esta masacre? ¿No te das cuenta que al fin no habrá más que amargura? ¿Qué esperas para decirle a tu gente que deje de perseguir a sus hermanos?».
27 Joab replied, 'As Yahweh lives, if you had not spoken, these men would not have given up the pursuitof their brothers until morning.'	27 Joab respondió: «¡Por la vida de Dios, si tú no hubieras hablado, sólo por la mañana habría dejado esta gente de perseguir a sus hermanos!».
28 Joab then sounded the trumpet and all the troops halted; they pursued Israel no further and fought nomore.	28 Luego Joab hizo sonar el cuerno, y todo el ejército se detuvo: ya no persiguieron más a Israel y desistieron del combate.
29 Al that night Abner and his men made their way through the Arabah; they crossed the Jordan and,marching throughout the morning, came to Mahanaim.	29 Abner y sus hombres caminaron toda aquella noche por la Arabá y cruzaron el Jordán. Luego recorrieron todo el Bitrón y llegaron a Majanaim.
30 Joab, having stopped pursuing Abner, mustered the whole contingent; David's retainers had lostnineteen men in addition to Asahel,	30 Joab, por su parte, dejó de perseguir a Abner y reunió toda la tropa. Entre los servidores de David faltaban diecinueve hombres, además de Asael.
31 but had killed three hundred and sixty of Benjamin, Abner's men.	31 Los servidores de David, en cambio, habían matado a trescientos sesenta entre los benjaminitas y los hombres de Abner.
32 They took up Asahel and buried him in his father's tomb, which is at Bethlehem. Joab and his menthen marched throughout the night, reaching Hebron at daybreak.	32 Joab y sus hombres se llevaron el cadáver de Asael y lo sepultaron en la tumba de su padre, que está en Belén.
