Genesis 47

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 So Joseph went and told Pharaoh, 'My father and brothers have arrived from Canaan with their flocksand cattle and al their possessions. Here they are, in the region of Goshen.'	1 Donc Joseph alla avertir Pharaon: "Mon père et mes frères, dit-il, sont arrivés du pays de Canaanavec leur petit et leur gros bétail et tout ce qui leur appartient; les voici dans la terre de Goshèn."
2 He had taken five of his brothers, and he now presented them to Pharaoh.	2 Il avait pris cinq de ses frères, qu'il présenta à Pharaon.
3 Pharaoh asked his brothers, 'What is your occupation?' and they gave Pharaoh the answer, 'Yourservants are shepherds, like our fathers before us.'	3 Celui-ci demanda à ses frères: "Quel est votre métier", et ils répondirent: "Tes serviteurs sont desbergers, nous-mêmes comme déjà nos pères."
4 They went on to tel Pharaoh, 'We have come to stay in this country for the time being, since there isno pasturage for your servants' flocks, Canaan being stricken with famine. So now please al ow your servants tosettle in the region of Goshen.'	4 Ils dirent aussi à Pharaon: "Nous sommes venus séjourner dans le pays, car il n'y a plus de pâturepour les troupeaux de tes serviteurs: la famine, en effet, accable le pays de Canaan. Permets maintenant que tesserviteurs demeurent dans la terre de Goshèn."
5 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph,'They may stay in the region of Goshen, and if you know of any capablemen among them, put them in charge of my own livestock.' Jacob and his sons went to Egypt where Josephwas. Pharaoh king of Egypt heard about this and said to Joseph, 'Your father and brothers have come to you.	5 Alors Pharaon dit à Joseph: Jacob et ses fils vinrent en Egypte auprès de Joseph. Pharaon, roid'Egypte, l'apprit et il dit à Joseph: "Ton père et tes frères sont arrivés près de toi. Le pays d'Egypte est à tadisposition: établis ton père et tes frères dans la meilleure région."
6 The country of Egypt is open to you: settle your father and brothers in the best region.'	6 "Qu'ils habitent la terre de Goshèn et, si tu sais qu'il y a parmi eux des hommes capables, place-lescomme régisseurs de mes propres troupeaux."
7 Joseph brought his father and presented him to Pharaoh. Jacob paid his respects to Pharaoh.	7 Alors Joseph introduisit son père Jacob et le présenta à Pharaon, et Jacob salua Pharaon.
8 Pharaoh asked Jacob, 'How many years have you lived?'	8 Pharaon demanda à Jacob: "Combien comptes-tu d'années de vie?"
9 Jacob said to Pharaoh, 'The years of my stay on earth add up to one hundred and thirty years. Fewand unhappy my years have been, fal ing short of my ancestors' years in their stay on earth.'	9 Et Jacob répondit à Pharaon: "Les années de mon séjour sur terre ont été de 13 0 ans, mes annéesont été brèves et malheureuses et n'ont pas atteint l'âge de mes pères, les années de leur séjour."
10 Jacob then took leave of Pharaoh and withdrew from his presence.	10 Jacob salua Pharaon et prit congé de lui.
11 Joseph then settled his father and brothers, giving them land holdings in Egypt, in the best part of thecountry, the region of Rameses, as Pharaoh had ordered.	11 Joseph établit son père et ses frères et il leur donna une propriété au pays d'Egypte, dans lameilleure région, la terre de Ramsès, comme l'avait ordonné Pharaon.
12 Joseph provided his father, brothers and al his father's family with food, down to the least of them.	12 Joseph procura du pain à son père, à ses frères et à toute la famille de son père, selon le nombredes personnes à leur charge.
13 And on al the earth around there was now no food anywhere, for the famine had grown very severe,and Egypt and Canaan were both weak with hunger.	13 Il n'y avait pas de pain sur toute la terre, car la famine était devenue très dure et le pays d'Egypteet le pays de Canaan languissaient de faim.
14 Joseph accumulated al the money to be found in Egypt and Canaan, in exchange for the suppliesbeing handed out, and put the money in Pharaoh's palace.	14 Joseph ramassa tout l'argent qui se trouvait au pays d'Egypte et au pays de Canaan en échange dugrain qu'on achetait et il livra cet argent au palais de Pharaon.
15 When al the money in Egypt and Canaan was exhausted, al the Egyptians came to Joseph,pleading, 'Give us food, unless you want us to die before your eyes! For our money has come to an end.'	15 Lorsque fut épuisé l'argent du pays d'Egypte et du pays de Canaan, tous les Egyptiens vinrent àJoseph en disant:"Donne-nous du pain! Pourquoi devrions-nous mourir sous tesyeux? Car il n'y a plus d'argent."
16 Joseph replied, 'Hand over your livestock and I shal issue you food in exchange for your livestock, ifyour money has come to an end.'	16 Alors Joseph leur dit: "Livrez vos troupeaux et je vous donnerai du pain en échange de vostroupeaux, s'il n'y a plus d'argent."
17 So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and Joseph gave them food in exchange for horses andlivestock, whether sheep or cattle, and for donkeys. Thus he saw them through that year with food in exchangefor all their livestock.	17 Ils amenèrent leurs troupeaux à Joseph et celui-ci leur donna du pain pour prix des chevaux, dupetit et du gros bétail et des ânes; il les nourrit de pain, cette année-là, en échange de leurs troupeaux.
18 When that year was over, they came to him the next year, and said to him, 'We cannot hide it frommy lord: the truth is, our money has run out and the livestock is in my lord's possession. There is nothing left formy lord except our bodies and our land.	18 Lorsque fut écoulée cette année-là, ils revinrent vers lui l'année suivante et lui dirent: "Nous nepouvons le cacher à Monseigneur: vraiment l'argent est épuisé et les bestiaux sont déjà à Monseigneur, il ne resteà la disposition de Monseigneur que notre corps et notre terroir.
19 If we and our land are not to perish, take us and our land in exchange for food, and we with our landwil become Pharaoh's serfs; only give us seed, so that we can survive and not die and the land not revert todesert!'	19 Pourquoi devrions-nous mourir sous tes yeux, nous et notre terroir? Acquiers donc nos personneset notre terroir pour du pain, et nous serons, avec notre terroir, les serfs de Pharaon. Mais donne-nous de quoisemer pour que nous restions en vie et ne mourions pas et que notre terroir ne soit pas désolé."
20 Thus Joseph acquired all the land in Egypt for Pharaoh, since one by one the Egyptians sold theirfields, so hard pressed were they by the famine; and the whole country passed into Pharaoh's possession,	20 Ainsi Joseph acquit pour Pharaon tout le terroir d'Egypte, car les Egyptiens vendirent chacun sonchamp, tant les pressait la famine, et le pays passa aux mains de Pharaon.
21 while the people he reduced to serfdom from one end of Egypt to the other.	21 Quant aux gens, il les réduisit en servage, d'un bout à l'autre du territoire égyptien.
22 The only land he did not acquire belonged to the priests, for the priests received an al owance fromPharaoh and lived on the al owance that Pharaoh gave them. Hence they had no need to sel their land.	22 Il n'y eut que le terroir des prêtres qu'il n'acquit pas, car les prêtres recevaient une rente dePharaon et vivaient de la rente qu'ils recevaient de Pharaon. Aussi n'eurent-ils pas à vendre leur terroir.
23 Then Joseph said to the people, 'This is how we stand: I have bought you out, with your land, onPharaoh's behalf. Here is seed for you to sow the land.	23 Puis Joseph dit au peuple: "Donc, je vous ai maintenant acquis pour Pharaon, avec votre terroir.Voici pour vous de la semence, pour ensemencer votre terroir.
24 But of the harvest you must give a fifth to Pharaoh. The other four-fifths you can have for sowingyour fields, to provide food for yourselves and your households, and food for your children.'	24 Mais, sur la récolte, vous devrez donner un cinquième à Pharaon, et les quatre autres parts serontà vous, pour la semence du champ, pour votre nourriture et celle de votre famille, pour la nourriture despersonnes à votre charge."
25 'You have saved our lives!' they replied. 'If it please my lord, we will become serfs to Pharaoh.'	25 Ils répondirent: "Tu nous as sauvé la vie! Puissions-nous seulement trouver grâce aux yeux deMonseigneur, et nous serons les serfs de Pharaon."
26 So Joseph made a law, still in force today, as regards the soil of Egypt, that one-fifth should go toPharaoh. Only the land of the priests did not go to Pharaoh.	26 De cela, Joseph fit une règle, qui vaut encore aujourd'hui pour le terroir d'Egypte: on verse lecinquième à Pharaon. Seul le terroir des prêtres ne fut pas à Pharaon.
27 Thus Israel settled in Egypt, in the region of Goshen. They acquired property there; they were fruitfuland grew very numerous.	27 Ainsi Israël s'établit au pays d'Egypte dans la terre de Goshèn. Ils y acquirent des propriétés,furent féconds et devinrent très nombreux.
28 Jacob lived seventeen years in Egypt; thus Jacob's total age came to a hundred and forty-sevenyears.	28 Jacob vécut dix-sept ans au pays d'Egypte et la durée de la vie de Jacob fut de 14 7 ans.
29 When Israel's time to die drew near he sent for his son Joseph and said to him, 'If you real y love me,place your hand under my thigh as pledge that you will act with faithful love towards me: do not bury me inEgypt!	29 Lorsqu'approcha pour Israël le temps de sa mort, il appela son fils Joseph et lui dit: "Si j'ai tonaffection, mets ta main sous ma cuisse, montre-moi bienveillance et bonté: ne m'enterre pas en Egypte!
30 When I lie down with my ancestors, carry me out of Egypt and bury me in their tomb.' 'I shal do asyou say,' he replied.	30 Quand je serai couché avec mes pères, tu m'emporteras d'Egypte et tu m'enterreras dans leurtombeau." Il répondit: "Je ferai comme tu as dit."
31 'Swear to me,' he insisted. So he swore to him, and Israel sank back on the pil ow.	31 Mais son père insista: "Prête-moi serment", et il lui prêta serment, pendant qu'Israël se prosternaitsur le chevet de son lit.
