NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLES DES PEUPLES
1 So Joseph went and told Pharaoh, 'My father and brothers have arrived from Canaan with their flocksand cattle and al their possessions. Here they are, in the region of Goshen.'	1 Alors Joseph vint prévenir le Pharaon: “Mon père et mes frères, lui dit-il, sont arrivés du pays de Canaan avec leur petit et leur gros bétail, et tout ce qui leur appartient. Ils sont au pays de Gossen.”
2 He had taken five of his brothers, and he now presented them to Pharaoh.	2 Joseph prit cinq de ses frères et les conduisit devant le Pharaon.
3 Pharaoh asked his brothers, 'What is your occupation?' and they gave Pharaoh the answer, 'Yourservants are shepherds, like our fathers before us.'	3 Pharaon dit à ses frères: “Que faites-vous?” Ils répondirent au Pharaon: “Tes serviteurs élèvent du petit bétail, nous le faisons comme le faisaient nos pères.”
4 They went on to tel Pharaoh, 'We have come to stay in this country for the time being, since there isno pasturage for your servants' flocks, Canaan being stricken with famine. So now please al ow your servants tosettle in the region of Goshen.'	4 Ils firent cette demande au Pharaon: “Nous sommes venus pour habiter dans ce pays, car il n’y a plus de pâturages pour le troupeau de tes serviteurs, tellement la famine est grande au pays de Canaan. Tes serviteurs pourront-ils s’installer maintenant au pays de Gossen?”
5 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph,'They may stay in the region of Goshen, and if you know of any capablemen among them, put them in charge of my own livestock.' Jacob and his sons went to Egypt where Josephwas. Pharaoh king of Egypt heard about this and said to Joseph, 'Your father and brothers have come to you.	5 Le Pharaon dit alors à Joseph: “Ton père et tes frères sont venus me trouver.
6 The country of Egypt is open to you: settle your father and brothers in the best region.'	6 Le pays d’Égypte est à ta disposition; installe ton père et tes frères dans le meilleur endroit du pays. Qu’ils habitent au pays de Gossen, et si tu sais qu’il y a parmi eux des hommes de valeur, tu les prendras comme chefs de mes propres troupeaux.”
7 Joseph brought his father and presented him to Pharaoh. Jacob paid his respects to Pharaoh.	7 Joseph fit donc venir son père Jacob; il le présenta au Pharaon et Jacob salua le Pharaon.
8 Pharaoh asked Jacob, 'How many years have you lived?'	8 Le Pharaon demanda à Jacob: “Quel est ton âge?”
9 Jacob said to Pharaoh, 'The years of my stay on earth add up to one hundred and thirty years. Fewand unhappy my years have been, fal ing short of my ancestors' years in their stay on earth.'	9 Jacob répondit au Pharaon: “J’en suis à la cent trentième année de ma vie errante, mais je n’ai pas atteint le grand âge de mes pères, qui étaient nomades comme moi. Ma vie a été courte et malheureuse.”
10 Jacob then took leave of Pharaoh and withdrew from his presence.	10 Jacob salua de nouveau le Pharaon et se retira de devant lui.
11 Joseph then settled his father and brothers, giving them land holdings in Egypt, in the best part of thecountry, the region of Rameses, as Pharaoh had ordered.	11 Joseph installa donc son père et ses frères, il leur donna des terres au pays d’Égypte, dans le meilleur endroit, dans la terre de Ramsès, comme l’avait ordonné le Pharaon.
12 Joseph provided his father, brothers and al his father's family with food, down to the least of them.	12 Joseph se chargea de nourrir son père et ses frères, ainsi que toute la famille de son père; il leur donna du pain selon le nombre des enfants.
13 And on al the earth around there was now no food anywhere, for the famine had grown very severe,and Egypt and Canaan were both weak with hunger.	13 Il n’y avait plus de pain sur toute la terre, tellement la famine était grande. Le pays d’Égypte et le pays de Canaan étaient épuisés par cette famine.
14 Joseph accumulated al the money to be found in Egypt and Canaan, in exchange for the suppliesbeing handed out, and put the money in Pharaoh's palace.	14 Alors Joseph rassembla tout l’argent que donnaient les Égyptiens et les Cananéens lorsqu’ils venaient acheter du blé. Et Joseph fit rentrer cet argent dans le palais du Pharaon.
15 When al the money in Egypt and Canaan was exhausted, al the Egyptians came to Joseph,pleading, 'Give us food, unless you want us to die before your eyes! For our money has come to an end.'	15 Mais bientôt il n’y eut plus d’argent, ni en Égypte, ni en Canaan. Tous les Égyptiens vinrent donc trouver Joseph: “Donne-nous du pain, lui dirent-ils, même si nous n’avons plus d’argent. Faut-il donc que nous mourions sous tes yeux?”
16 Joseph replied, 'Hand over your livestock and I shal issue you food in exchange for your livestock, ifyour money has come to an end.'	16 Joseph leur répondit: “Si vous n’avez plus d’argent, donnez-moi vos troupeaux et je vous donnerai du pain en échange.”
17 So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and Joseph gave them food in exchange for horses andlivestock, whether sheep or cattle, and for donkeys. Thus he saw them through that year with food in exchangefor all their livestock.	17 Ils amenèrent donc leurs troupeaux à Joseph, et Joseph leur donna du pain en échange des chevaux, des troupeaux de petit et gros bétail et même des ânes. Il leur fournit des aliments cette année-là au prix de tous leurs troupeaux.
18 When that year was over, they came to him the next year, and said to him, 'We cannot hide it frommy lord: the truth is, our money has run out and the livestock is in my lord's possession. There is nothing left formy lord except our bodies and our land.	18 À la fin de cette année-là, ils vinrent de nouveau le trouver et lui dirent: “Mon seigneur sait bien que nous n’avons plus d’argent et que nos troupeaux appartiennent maintenant à mon seigneur. Nous n’avons plus à lui offrir que nos corps et nos champs.
19 If we and our land are not to perish, take us and our land in exchange for food, and we with our landwil become Pharaoh's serfs; only give us seed, so that we can survive and not die and the land not revert todesert!'	19 Devons-nous donc maintenant mourir sous tes yeux, nous et nos champs? Donne-nous du pain en échange de nos corps et de nos champs. Nous serons, nous et nos champs, les esclaves du Pharaon. Donne-nous du grain pour que nous restions en vie; sinon, nous allons mourir et nos champs retourneront en friche.”
20 Thus Joseph acquired all the land in Egypt for Pharaoh, since one by one the Egyptians sold theirfields, so hard pressed were they by the famine; and the whole country passed into Pharaoh's possession,	20 Ainsi Joseph acquit tous les champs d’Égypte pour le compte du Pharaon, car les Égyptiens vendaient tous leurs champs, tellement la famine pesait sur eux. Tout le pays devint ainsi la propriété du Pharaon.
21 while the people he reduced to serfdom from one end of Egypt to the other.	21 Quant au peuple, il fut réduit en esclavage dans tout le pays d’Égypte.
22 The only land he did not acquire belonged to the priests, for the priests received an al owance fromPharaoh and lived on the al owance that Pharaoh gave them. Hence they had no need to sel their land.	22 Cependant Joseph ne reprit pas aux prêtres leurs terres, car il y avait une loi du Pharaon en leur faveur, et d’après cette loi, le Pharaon devait assurer la nourriture des prêtres. C’est pourquoi ils ne vendirent pas les champs qui leur appartenaient.
23 Then Joseph said to the people, 'This is how we stand: I have bought you out, with your land, onPharaoh's behalf. Here is seed for you to sow the land.	23 Joseph dit alors au peuple: “Je vous ai achetés aujourd’hui, vous et vos champs, pour le Pharaon. Voici donc du grain pour vous, vous ensemencerez vos champs.
24 But of the harvest you must give a fifth to Pharaoh. The other four-fifths you can have for sowingyour fields, to provide food for yourselves and your households, and food for your children.'	24 Quand viendra le temps de la récolte, vous donnerez un cinquième de cette récolte au Pharaon, et les quatre autres parts vous resteront pour ensemencer vos champs, et pour vous nourrir, vous et tous ceux de votre maison.”
25 'You have saved our lives!' they replied. 'If it please my lord, we will become serfs to Pharaoh.'	25 Ils répondirent: “Grâce à toi nous allons vivre! Puissions-nous trouver grâce aux yeux de mon seigneur: nous serons les esclaves du Pharaon!”
26 So Joseph made a law, still in force today, as regards the soil of Egypt, that one-fifth should go toPharaoh. Only the land of the priests did not go to Pharaoh.	26 Joseph établit donc un impôt sur les champs d’Égypte et, maintenant encore, un cinquième de la récolte est remis au Pharaon. Seuls les champs des prêtres ne devinrent pas propriété du Pharaon.
27 Thus Israel settled in Egypt, in the region of Goshen. They acquired property there; they were fruitfuland grew very numerous.	27 Les Israélites habitèrent en Égypte sur les terres de Gossen. Ils en prirent possession, ils s’y développèrent et se multiplièrent beaucoup.
28 Jacob lived seventeen years in Egypt; thus Jacob's total age came to a hundred and forty-sevenyears.	28 Jacob vécut 17 ans en Égypte. Le total des années de Jacob fut de 147 ans.
29 When Israel's time to die drew near he sent for his son Joseph and said to him, 'If you real y love me,place your hand under my thigh as pledge that you will act with faithful love towards me: do not bury me inEgypt!	29 Quand Israël sentit que sa mort était proche, il appela son fils Joseph et lui dit: “Si j’ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, mets ta main sous ma cuisse et promets-moi de ne pas m’enterrer en Égypte, je reconnaîtrai là ta bonté et ta fidélité.
30 When I lie down with my ancestors, carry me out of Egypt and bury me in their tomb.' 'I shal do asyou say,' he replied.	30 Lorsque je me serai couché avec mes pères, tu m’emporteras d’Égypte et tu m’enterreras dans la tombe de mes pères.” Joseph répondit: “Je ferai ce que tu me demandes.”
31 'Swear to me,' he insisted. So he swore to him, and Israel sank back on the pil ow.	31 Israël lui dit: “Jure-le moi!” Il le lui jura, et Israël s’inclina devant lui, au chevet de son lit.
