Genesis 43

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA TINTORI
1 But the famine in the country grew worse,	1 Ma intanto la fame si faceva sentire crudelmente su tutto il paese,
2 and when they had finished eating the supplies which they had brought from Egypt their father said tothem, 'Go back and get us a little food.'	2 ed essendo già finiti i viveri portati dall'Egitto, Giacobbe disse ai suoi figli: « Tornate a comprarci un po' da mangiare.
3 'But', Judah replied, 'the man expressly warned us, "You wil not be admitted to my presence unlessyour brother is with you."	3 Giuda rispose: « Quell'uomo ce lo dichiarò con giuramento: Non vedrete la mia faccia se non menate con voi il vostro fratello più piccolo.
4 If you are ready to send our brother with us, we will go down and get food for you.	4 Se dunque tu vuoi mandarlo con noi, andremo anche noi, e compreremo quanto ti è necessario;
5 But if you are not ready to send him, we will not go down, in view of the man's warning, "You wil notbe admitted to my presence unless your brother is with you." '	5 ma se tu non vuoi mandarlo, non andremo, perchè quell'uomo, come abbiamo detto più volte, ci ha detto chiaramente: Non vedrete la mia faccia se il vostro fratello più piccolo non sarà con voi ».
6 Then Israel said, 'Why did you bring this misery on me by tel ing the man you had another brother?'	6 E Israele disse loro: « È per mia sventura che gli avete fatto sapere di avere anche un altro fratello.
7 They replied, 'He kept questioning us about ourselves and our family, asking, "Is your father stillalive?" and, "Have you another brother?" That is why we told him. How could we know he was going to say,"Bring your brother down here"?'	7 Ma essi risposero: « Fu lui che ci interrogò per ordine intorno alla nostra stirpe, chiedendo se era vivo il padre, se avevamo un altro fratello; e noi non facemmo che rispondere alle sue domande, e come si poteva andare a pensare che ci avrebbe detto: Conducete con voi il vostro fratello? »
8 Judah then said to his father Israel, 'Send the boy with me, and let us be off and go, if we are tosurvive and not die, we, you, and our dependants.	8 Giuda disse ancora a suo padre: « Lascia venir meco il fanciullo, affinchè si possa partire e vivere, e non si abbia a morire noi e i nostri bambini.
9 I wil go surety for him, and you can hold me responsible for him. If I do not bring him back to you andproduce him before you, let me bear the blame al my life.	9 Mi rendo garante io del fanciullo: domandane conto a me: se io non te lo riconduco e non te lo rendo, sarò per sempre colpevole contro di te.
10 Indeed, if we had not wasted so much time we should have been there and back twice by now!'	10 Se non ci fossimo indugiati, a quest'ora saremmo già ritornati due volte ».
11 Then their father Israel said to them, 'If it must be so, then do this: take some of the country's bestproducts in your baggage and take them to the man as a gift: some balsam, some honey, gum tragacanth, resin,pistachio nuts and almonds.	11 Allora Israele, loro padre, disse loro: « Se così è necessario, fate quel che volete: prendete nei vostri vasi dei frutti più squisiti di questo paese e portateli in dono a quell'uomo: un po' di resina e di miele, dello storace, della mirra, del terebinto e delle mandorle.
12 Take double the amount of money with you and return the money put back in the mouths of yoursacks; it may have been a mistake.	12 Portate con voi anche il doppio del danaro, riportando quello che avete trovato nei sacchi; forse fu un errore.
13 Take your brother, and go back to the man.	13 Prendete pure anche il vostro fratello e andate a trovare quell'uomo.
14 May El Shaddai move the man to be kind to you, and al ow you to bring back your other brother andBenjamin. As for me, if I must be bereaved, bereaved I must be.'	14 Dio Onnipotente ve lo renda propizio, sicché egli rimandi con voi l'altro vostro fratello che tiene prigioniero e Beniamino; ma io resterò come un uomo privo di figli ».
15 The men took this gift; they took double the amount of money with them, and Benjamin. They set off,went down to Egypt and presented themselves before Joseph.	15 Essi adunque presero i doni e il doppio del danaro e Beniamino, e discesero in Egitto, e si presentarono a Giuseppe,
16 When Joseph saw Benjamin with them he said to his chamberlain, 'Take these men into the house.Slaughter a beast and prepare it, for these men are to eat with me at midday.'	16 il quale, avendoli veduti insieme a Beniamino, disse al suo maestro di casa: « Conduci questi uomini in casa: uccidi le vittime e prepara un convito, perchè essi mangeranno con me a mezzogiorno ».
17 The man did as Joseph had ordered, and took the men to Joseph's house.	17 Il maestro di casa eseguì quanto gli era stato imposto, e li condusse in casa,
18 The men were afraid at being taken to Joseph's house and said, 'We are being taken there becauseof the money replaced in our sacks the first time. They wil set on us; they wil fal on us and make slaves of us,and take our donkeys too.'	18 ove pieni di paura, dissero tra di loro: «Per quel danaro che riportammo nei nostri sacchi, siam condotti qua dentro: egli vuole addossarci questa calunnia per ridurre colla violenza in schiavitù noi ed i nostri asini ».
19 So they went up to Joseph's chamberlain and spoke to him at the entrance to the house.	19 Per questo, accostatisi sulla stessa porta al maestro di casa,
20 'By your leave, sir,' they said, 'we came down once before to get supplies,	20 gli dissero: « Ti preghiamo, o Signore, di ascoltarci! Noi siam venuti un'altra volta a comprar dei viveri;
21 and when we reached camp and opened our sacks, there was each man's money in the mouth of hissack, to the full. But we have brought it back with us,	21 dopo averli comprati, quando all'albergo aprimmo i nostri sacchi, alla bocca di essi ritrovammo il nostro danaro, che abbiamo riportato nello stesso peso.
22 and we have brought more money with us for the supplies. We do not know who put our money inour sacks.'	22 Oltre all'altro danaro che abbiamo portato per comprare quanto ci bisogna. Noi non sappiamo chi abbia messo quel danaro nei nostri sacchi ».
23 'Set your minds at ease,' he replied, 'do not be afraid. Your God and the God of your father puttreasure in your sacks for you. I received your money.' And he brought Simeon out to them.	23 Ma egli rispose: « Datevi pace e non temete: il vostro Dio e il Dio del padre vostro ha posti quei tesori nei vostri sacchi; il vostro danaro è giunto a me in buona moneta ». E liberato Simeone, lo condusse a loro.
24 The man then took the men into Joseph's house. He offered them water to wash their feet, and gavetheir donkeys fodder.	24 Fattili poi entrare in casa, portò dell'acqua perchè si lavassero i piedi, e diè da mangiare ai loro asini.
25 They arranged their gift while they waited for Joseph to come at midday, for they had heard theywere to dine there.	25 Essi prepararono i doni per quando Giuseppe sarebbe andato da loro, a mezzogiorno, avendo inteso che dovevano rimaner lì a mangiare.
26 When Joseph arrived at the house they offered him the gift they had with them, bowing low beforehim.	26 Quando poi Giuseppe entrò in casa sua, essi gli offrirono i doni che tenevano in mano, e adorarono prostrati fino a terra.
27 He greeted them pleasantly, asking, 'Is your father wel , the old man you told me of ? Is he stillalive?'	27 Ma Giuseppe, reso loro berignamente il saluto, disse: « Il vostro padre, il vecchio di cui mi parlaste sta bene? vive ancora? »
28 'Your servant our father is wel ,' they replied, 'he is stil alive,' and they bowed respectful y.	28 Risposero: « Il tuo servo, il padre nostro, sta bene, vive ancora ». E prostrati, lo adorarono.
29 Looking about, he saw his brother Benjamin, his mother's son. 'Is this your youngest brother', heasked, 'of whom you told me?' And he added, 'God be good to you, my son.'	29 Ma Giuseppe, alzati gli occhi e veduto Beniamino, figliolo della sua madre, disse: « È questo il vostro fratello più piccolo di cui mi parlaste? » E disse a lui: « Dio abbia misericordia di te, figliolo mio! »
30 Joseph hurried out; so strong was the affection he felt for his brother that he wanted to cry. He wentinto his room and there he wept.	30 E in fretta si ritirò, perchè le sue viscere si erano commosse davanti al suo fratello, e gli cadevan le lacrime. Entrò nella sua camera e pianse.
31 After washing his face he returned and, controlling himself, gave the order: 'Serve the meal.'	31 Ma poi, lavatasi la faccia, uscì fuori, si fece forza e disse: « Portate da mangiare ».
32 He was served separately; so were they, and so were the Egyptians who ate in his household, forthe Egyptians could not take food with Hebrews; Egyptians have a horror of doing so.	32 E fu imbandita la mensa, a parte per Giuseppe, a parte pei fratelli e a parte per gli Egiziani che mangiavano con lui, perchè gli Egiziani non stiman lecito mangiare con gli Ebrei e credono profano un tal convito.
33 They were placed facing him in order of seniority, from the eldest to the youngest, and the menlooked at one another in amazement.	33 Essi sedettero alla presenza di Giuseppe, il primogenito secondo il suo diritto di primogenitura, e il più piccolo, secondo la sua età; e restavano oltremodo maravigliati,
34 He had portions carried to them from his own dish, the portion for Benjamin being five times largerthan any of the others. And they feasted with him and drank freely.	34 ricevendo le porzioni che egli loro mandava. La porzione maggiore, che era cinque volte più grossa, fu per Beniamino. Così bevettero e stettero allegri con lui.
