Genesis 43

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 But the famine in the country grew worse,	1 Mais la famine pesait sur le pays
2 and when they had finished eating the supplies which they had brought from Egypt their father said tothem, 'Go back and get us a little food.'	2 et lorsqu'ils eurent achevé de manger le grain qu'ils avaient apporté d'Egypte, leur père leur dit:"Retournez et achetez-nous un peu de vivres."
3 'But', Judah replied, 'the man expressly warned us, "You wil not be admitted to my presence unlessyour brother is with you."	3 Juda lui répondit: "Cet homme nous a expressément avertis:Vous ne serez pas admis en maprésence à moins que votre frère ne soit avec vous.
4 If you are ready to send our brother with us, we will go down and get food for you.	4 Si tu es prêt à laisser notre frère avec nous, nous descendrons et t'achèterons des vivres,
5 But if you are not ready to send him, we will not go down, in view of the man's warning, "You wil notbe admitted to my presence unless your brother is with you." '	5 mais si tu ne le laisses pas partir, nous ne descendrons pas, car cet homme nous a dit: Vous neserez pas admis en ma présence à moins que votre frère ne soit avec vous."
6 Then Israel said, 'Why did you bring this misery on me by tel ing the man you had another brother?'
7 They replied, 'He kept questioning us about ourselves and our family, asking, "Is your father stillalive?" and, "Have you another brother?" That is why we told him. How could we know he was going to say,"Bring your brother down here"?'	7 "C'est, répondirent-ils, que l'homme s'est enquis de nous et de notre famille en demandant: Votrepère est-il encore vivant, avez-vous un frère? Et nous l'avons informé en conséquence. Pouvions-nous savoirqu'il dirait: Amenez votre frère?"
8 Judah then said to his father Israel, 'Send the boy with me, and let us be off and go, if we are tosurvive and not die, we, you, and our dependants.	8 Alors Juda dit à son père Israël: "Laisse aller l'enfant avec moi. Allons, mettons-nous en route pourque nous conservions la vie et ne mourions pas, nous-mêmes avec toi et les personnes à notre charge.
9 I wil go surety for him, and you can hold me responsible for him. If I do not bring him back to you andproduce him before you, let me bear the blame al my life.	9 Je me porte garant pour lui et tu m'en demanderas compte: s'il m'arrive de ne pas te le ramener etde ne pas le remettre devant tes yeux, j'en porterai la faute pendant toute ma vie.
10 Indeed, if we had not wasted so much time we should have been there and back twice by now!'	10 Si nous n'avions pas tant tardé, nous serions déjà revenus pour la seconde fois!"
11 Then their father Israel said to them, 'If it must be so, then do this: take some of the country's bestproducts in your baggage and take them to the man as a gift: some balsam, some honey, gum tragacanth, resin,pistachio nuts and almonds.	11 Alors leur père Israël leur dit: "Puisqu'il le faut, faites donc ceci: dans vos bagages prenez desmeilleurs produits du pays pour les apporter en présent à cet homme, un peu de baume et un peu de miel, de lagomme adragante et du ladanum, des pistaches et des amandes.
12 Take double the amount of money with you and return the money put back in the mouths of yoursacks; it may have been a mistake.	12 Prenez avec vous une seconde somme d'argent et rapportez l'argent qui a été remis à l'entrée devos sacs à blé: c'était peut-être une méprise.
13 Take your brother, and go back to the man.	13 Prenez votre frère et partez, retournez auprès de cet homme.
14 May El Shaddai move the man to be kind to you, and al ow you to bring back your other brother andBenjamin. As for me, if I must be bereaved, bereaved I must be.'	14 Qu'El Shaddaï vous fasse trouver miséricorde auprès de cet homme et qu'il vous laisse ramenervotre autre frère et Benjamin. Pour moi, que je perde mes enfants si je dois les perdre!"
15 The men took this gift; they took double the amount of money with them, and Benjamin. They set off,went down to Egypt and presented themselves before Joseph.	15 Nos gens prirent donc ce présent, le double d'argent avec eux, et Benjamin; ils partirent etdescendirent en Egypte et ils se présentèrent devant Joseph.
16 When Joseph saw Benjamin with them he said to his chamberlain, 'Take these men into the house.Slaughter a beast and prepare it, for these men are to eat with me at midday.'	16 Quand Joseph les vit avec Benjamin, il dit à son intendant:"Conduis ces gens à la maison, abatsune bête et apprête-là, car ces gens mangeront avec moi à midi."
17 The man did as Joseph had ordered, and took the men to Joseph's house.	17 L'homme fit comme Joseph avait commandé et conduisit nos gens à la maison de Joseph.
18 The men were afraid at being taken to Joseph's house and said, 'We are being taken there becauseof the money replaced in our sacks the first time. They wil set on us; they wil fal on us and make slaves of us,and take our donkeys too.'	18 Nos gens eurent peur parce qu'on les conduisait à la maison de Joseph et ils dirent: "C'est à causede l'argent qui s'est retrouvé la première fois dans nos sacs à blé qu'on nous emmène: on va nous assaillir, tombersur nous et nous prendre pour esclaves, avec nos ânes."
19 So they went up to Joseph's chamberlain and spoke to him at the entrance to the house.	19 Ils s'approchèrent de l'intendant de Joseph et lui parlèrent à l'entrée de la maison:
20 'By your leave, sir,' they said, 'we came down once before to get supplies,	20 "Pardon, Monseigneur! dirent-ils, nous sommes descendus une première fois pour acheter desvivres
21 and when we reached camp and opened our sacks, there was each man's money in the mouth of hissack, to the full. But we have brought it back with us,	21 et, lorsque nous sommes arrivés au campement pour la nuit et que nous avons ouvert nos sacs àblé, voici que l'argent de chacun se trouvait à l'entrée de son sac, notre argent bien compté, et nous le rapportonsavec nous.
22 and we have brought more money with us for the supplies. We do not know who put our money inour sacks.'	22 Nous avons apporté une autre somme pour acheter des vivres. Nous ne savons pas qui a mis notreargent dans nos sacs à blé."
23 'Set your minds at ease,' he replied, 'do not be afraid. Your God and the God of your father puttreasure in your sacks for you. I received your money.' And he brought Simeon out to them.	23 Mais il répondit: "Soyez en paix et n'ayez pas peur! C'est votre Dieu et le Dieu de votre père quivous a mis un trésor dans vos sacs à blé; votre argent m'est bien parvenu" et il leur amena Siméon.
24 The man then took the men into Joseph's house. He offered them water to wash their feet, and gavetheir donkeys fodder.	24 L'homme introduisit nos gens dans la maison de Joseph, il leur apporta de l'eau pour qu'ils selavent les pieds et il donna du fourrage à leurs ânes.
25 They arranged their gift while they waited for Joseph to come at midday, for they had heard theywere to dine there.	25 Ils disposèrent le présent en attendant que Joseph vienne pour midi, car ils avaient appris qu'ilsprendraient là leur repas.
26 When Joseph arrived at the house they offered him the gift they had with them, bowing low beforehim.	26 Quand Joseph rentra à la maison, ils lui offrirent le présent qu'ils avaient avec eux et seprosternèrent à terre.
27 He greeted them pleasantly, asking, 'Is your father wel , the old man you told me of ? Is he stillalive?'	27 Mais il les salua amicalement et demanda: "Comment se porte votre vieux père dont vous m'avezparlé, est-il encore envie?"
28 'Your servant our father is wel ,' they replied, 'he is stil alive,' and they bowed respectful y.	28 Ils répondirent: "Ton serviteur, notre père, se porte bien, il est encore en vie" et ilss'agenouillèrent et se prosternèrent.
29 Looking about, he saw his brother Benjamin, his mother's son. 'Is this your youngest brother', heasked, 'of whom you told me?' And he added, 'God be good to you, my son.'	29 Levant les yeux, Joseph vit son frère Benjamin, le fils de sa mère, et demanda: "Est-ce là votreplus jeune frère, dont vous m'avez parlé?" Et s'adressant à lui: "Que Dieu te fasse grâce, mon fils."
30 Joseph hurried out; so strong was the affection he felt for his brother that he wanted to cry. He wentinto his room and there he wept.	30 Et Joseph se hâta de sortir, car ses entrailles s'étaient émues pour son frère et les larmes luivenaient aux yeux: il entra dans sa chambre et là, il pleura.
31 After washing his face he returned and, controlling himself, gave the order: 'Serve the meal.'	31 S'étant lavé le visage, il revint et, se contenant, il ordonna: "Servez le repas."
32 He was served separately; so were they, and so were the Egyptians who ate in his household, forthe Egyptians could not take food with Hebrews; Egyptians have a horror of doing so.	32 On le servit à part, eux à part et à part aussi les Egyptiens qui mangeaient chez lui, car lesEgyptiens ne peuvent pas prendre leurs repas avec les Hébreux: ils ont cela en horreur.
33 They were placed facing him in order of seniority, from the eldest to the youngest, and the menlooked at one another in amazement.	33 Ils étaient placés en face de lui, chacun à son rang, de l'aîné au plus jeune, et nos gens seregardaient avec étonnement.
34 He had portions carried to them from his own dish, the portion for Benjamin being five times largerthan any of the others. And they feasted with him and drank freely.	34 Mais lui leur fit porter, de son plat, des portions d'honneur, et la portion de Benjamin surpassaitcinq fois celle de tous les autres. Avec lui ils burent et s'enivrèrent.
