Genesis 43

1 But the famine in the country grew worse,	1 Frattanto la fame vessava crudelmente tutta la terra.
2 and when they had finished eating the supplies which they had brought from Egypt their father said tothem, 'Go back and get us a little food.'	2 E consumati i viveri, che aveano portati d'Egitto, disse Giacobbe a' suoi figli: Tornate a comprarci qualche poco da mangiare.
3 'But', Judah replied, 'the man expressly warned us, "You wil not be admitted to my presence unlessyour brother is with you."	3 Rispose Giuda: Quell'uomo c'intimò con giuramento, dicendo: Non vedrete la mia faccia, se non menate con voi il fratello vostro più piccolo.
4 If you are ready to send our brother with us, we will go down and get food for you.	4 Se adunque tu vuoi mandarlo con noi, anderemo insieme, e compreremo quello che ti bisogna:
5 But if you are not ready to send him, we will not go down, in view of the man's warning, "You wil notbe admitted to my presence unless your brother is with you." '	5 Se tu non vuoi, non andremo: perché quell'uomo, come abbiam detto più volte, ci ha intimato, e ha detto: Non vedrete la mia faccia senza il fratello vostro più piccolo.
6 Then Israel said, 'Why did you bring this misery on me by tel ing the man you had another brother?'	6 Disse a lui Israele: Per mia sventura avete fatto sapere a colui, che avevate ancora un altro fratello.
7 They replied, 'He kept questioning us about ourselves and our family, asking, "Is your father stillalive?" and, "Have you another brother?" That is why we told him. How could we know he was going to say,"Bring your brother down here"?'	7 Ma quelli risposero: Quell'uomo c'interrogò per ordine intorno a tutta la nostra stirpe: se il padre era vivo: se avevamo altro fratello; e noi gli rispondevamo a tenore delle sue ricerche: potevamo noi sapere, ch'ei fosse per dire: Conducete con voi il vostro fratello?
8 Judah then said to his father Israel, 'Send the boy with me, and let us be off and go, if we are tosurvive and not die, we, you, and our dependants.	8 Disse ancor Giuda a suo padre: Manda con me il fanciullo, affinché partiamo, e possiamo salvar la vita, e non muoiamo noi, e i nostri pargoletti.
9 I wil go surety for him, and you can hold me responsible for him. If I do not bring him back to you andproduce him before you, let me bear the blame al my life.	9 Io entro mallevadore pel fanciullo: fammene render conto: s'io nol riconduco, e nol rendo a te, sarò per sempre reo di peccato contro di te.
10 Indeed, if we had not wasted so much time we should have been there and back twice by now!'	10 Se non fossimo stati a bada, saremmo già ritornati la seconda volta.
11 Then their father Israel said to them, 'If it must be so, then do this: take some of the country's bestproducts in your baggage and take them to the man as a gift: some balsam, some honey, gum tragacanth, resin,pistachio nuts and almonds.	11 Disse adunque ad essi il padre loro Israele: Se bisogna così, fate quel che volete: prendete ne' vostri vasi de' frutti più lodati di questo paese; e portategli in dono a quell'uomo, un po' di resina, e di miele, e dello storace, e della mirra, e del terebinto, e delle mandorle.
12 Take double the amount of money with you and return the money put back in the mouths of yoursacks; it may have been a mistake.	12 Portate anche con voi il doppio del denaro; e riportate quello che avete trovato ne' sacchi, che forse non sia stato sbaglio.
13 Take your brother, and go back to the man.	13 Ma prendete ancora il vostro fratello, e andate a trovar quell'uomo.
14 May El Shaddai move the man to be kind to you, and al ow you to bring back your other brother andBenjamin. As for me, if I must be bereaved, bereaved I must be.'	14 E il mio Dio onnipotente vel renda propizio, e rimandi con voi quel vostro fratello, che ha nelle mani, e questo Beniamin. Io poi sarò come uomo rimaso privo di figliuoli.
15 The men took this gift; they took double the amount of money with them, and Benjamin. They set off,went down to Egypt and presented themselves before Joseph.	15 Presero adunque quegli i doni, e il doppio del denaro, e Beniamin, e calarono in Egitto, e si presentarono a Giuseppe.
16 When Joseph saw Benjamin with them he said to his chamberlain, 'Take these men into the house.Slaughter a beast and prepare it, for these men are to eat with me at midday.'	16 E quegli avendogli veduti, e insieme con essi Beniamin, diede ordine al suo maestro di casa, dicendo: Conduci costoro in casa, e uccidi le vittime, e prepara il convito: perocché questi mangeranno a mezzogiorno con me.
17 The man did as Joseph had ordered, and took the men to Joseph's house.	17 Fece egli quello che gli era stato imposto, e condusse coloro dentro la casa.
18 The men were afraid at being taken to Joseph's house and said, 'We are being taken there becauseof the money replaced in our sacks the first time. They wil set on us; they wil fal on us and make slaves of us,and take our donkeys too.'	18 Ed ivi pieni di paura dicean tra di loro: Per ragion del denaro, che riportammo già ne' nostri sacchi, siam condotti qua dentro: volendo egli aggravarci con questa calunnia per ridurre violentemente in ischiavitù noi, e i nostri asini.
19 So they went up to Joseph's chamberlain and spoke to him at the entrance to the house.	19 Per la qual cosa sulla stessa porta si accostarono al maestro di casa,
20 'By your leave, sir,' they said, 'we came down once before to get supplies,	20 E dissero: Ti preghiamo, signore, che ci ascolti. Siam già venuti altra volta a comprar da vivere:
21 and when we reached camp and opened our sacks, there was each man's money in the mouth of hissack, to the full. But we have brought it back with us,	21 E compratone, giunti che fummo allo albergo aprimmo i nostri sacchi, e trovammo il denaro alla bocca dei sacchi, il quale abbiamo ora riportato dello stesso peso.
22 and we have brought more money with us for the supplies. We do not know who put our money inour sacks.'	22 E abbiamo ancor portato altro denaro per comprare quello che ci bisogna: noi non sappiamo chi rimettesse quello nelle nostre borse.
23 'Set your minds at ease,' he replied, 'do not be afraid. Your God and the God of your father puttreasure in your sacks for you. I received your money.' And he brought Simeon out to them.	23 Ma quegli rispose: Pace con voi, non temete: il vostro Dio, e il Dio del padre vostro ha posti que' tesori ne' vostri sacchi, perocché il denaro, che deste a me, lo ho io in buona moneta. E condussegli a veder Simeone.
24 The man then took the men into Joseph's house. He offered them water to wash their feet, and gavetheir donkeys fodder.	24 Ed entrati che furono nella casa, portò dell'acqua, e lavarono i loro piedi, e diede da mangiare a' loro asini.
25 They arranged their gift while they waited for Joseph to come at midday, for they had heard theywere to dine there.	25 Ed eglino approntavano i regali, per quando fosse venuto Giuseppe a mezzo giorno: perocché avevano udito, come ivi doveano mangiare.
26 When Joseph arrived at the house they offered him the gift they had with them, bowing low beforehim.	26 Entrò dunque Giuseppe in casa sua, e quelli offerirono a lui i doni, presentandoli colle loro mani, e lo adorarono inchinandosi fino a terra.
27 He greeted them pleasantly, asking, 'Is your father wel , the old man you told me of ? Is he stillalive?'	27 Ma egli, renduto loro benignamente il saluto, gl'interrogò dicendo: Il vecchio padre vostro, di cui mi parlaste, è egli sano? vive egli ancora?
28 'Your servant our father is wel ,' they replied, 'he is stil alive,' and they bowed respectful y.	28 Risposero: Sta bene il tuo servo il padre nostro; ei vive tuttora. E incurvatisi lo adorarono.
29 Looking about, he saw his brother Benjamin, his mother's son. 'Is this your youngest brother', heasked, 'of whom you told me?' And he added, 'God be good to you, my son.'	29 Ma Giuseppe alzati gli occhi vide Beniamin suo fratello uterino, e disse: È egli questi il fratel vostro più piccolo, di cui mi avevate parlato? E soggiunse: Abbia Dio misericordia di te, figlio mio.
30 Joseph hurried out; so strong was the affection he felt for his brother that he wanted to cry. He wentinto his room and there he wept.	30 E in fretta si ritirò, perché le viscere di lui si erano commosse a causa del suo fratello, e gli scappavano le lacrime: ed entrato in camera pianse.
31 After washing his face he returned and, controlling himself, gave the order: 'Serve the meal.'	31 E di poi lavatosi la faccia venne fuora, e si fe' forza, e disse: Portisi da mangiare.
32 He was served separately; so were they, and so were the Egyptians who ate in his household, forthe Egyptians could not take food with Hebrews; Egyptians have a horror of doing so.	32 E imbandita che fu la mensa a parte per Giuseppe ed anche a parte per gli Egiziani, che mangiavano insieme, e a parte pe' fratelli (perocché non è lecito agli Egiziani di mangiar cogli Ebrei, e profano credono tal convito),
33 They were placed facing him in order of seniority, from the eldest to the youngest, and the menlooked at one another in amazement.	33 Sederono alla destra di lui, il primogenito secondo la sua maggioranza, e il più piccolo secondo la sua età. E restavano maravigliati oltre modo,
34 He had portions carried to them from his own dish, the portion for Benjamin being five times largerthan any of the others. And they feasted with him and drank freely.	34 Ricevendo le porzioni, che eran loro mandate da lui: e la porzione maggiore, che era cinque volte più grossa fu per Beniamino. E bevvero, e si esilararono con lui.
