Genesis 43

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLES DES PEUPLES
1 But the famine in the country grew worse,	1 La famine s’était aggravée dans le pays;
2 and when they had finished eating the supplies which they had brought from Egypt their father said tothem, 'Go back and get us a little food.'	2 quand on eut fini de manger le blé qu’ils avaient ramené d’Égypte, le père leur dit: “Retournez acheter un peu de nourriture pour nous.”
3 'But', Judah replied, 'the man expressly warned us, "You wil not be admitted to my presence unlessyour brother is with you."	3 Mais Juda lui dit: “L’homme nous l’a dit clairement: Il est inutile de vous présenter devant moi sans votre frère!
4 If you are ready to send our brother with us, we will go down and get food for you.	4 Si tu envoies notre frère avec nous, nous descendrons et nous t’achèterons de la nourriture.
5 But if you are not ready to send him, we will not go down, in view of the man's warning, "You wil notbe admitted to my presence unless your brother is with you." '	5 Mais si tu ne l’envoies pas, nous ne descendrons pas, car l’homme nous a bien dit: Inutile de vous présenter devant moi sans votre frère!”
6 Then Israel said, 'Why did you bring this misery on me by tel ing the man you had another brother?'	6 Alors Israël leur dit: “Pourquoi avez-vous dit à cet homme que vous aviez encore un frère? Vous avez fait mon malheur.”
7 They replied, 'He kept questioning us about ourselves and our family, asking, "Is your father stillalive?" and, "Have you another brother?" That is why we told him. How could we know he was going to say,"Bring your brother down here"?'	7 Ils répondirent: “L’homme nous a tellement questionné sur nous, sur notre famille! Il nous a dit: Est-ce que votre père est encore vivant? Avez-vous un frère? Alors nous avons répondu à ses questions et nous l’avons renseigné. Pouvions-nous deviner qu’il nous dirait: Amenez-moi votre frère?”
8 Judah then said to his father Israel, 'Send the boy with me, and let us be off and go, if we are tosurvive and not die, we, you, and our dependants.	8 Juda dit alors à son père Israël: “Envoie le jeune homme avec moi, que nous puissions prendre le départ: c’est une question de vie ou de mort pour toi et pour nos petits enfants.
9 I wil go surety for him, and you can hold me responsible for him. If I do not bring him back to you andproduce him before you, let me bear the blame al my life.	9 Je répondrai pour lui, c’est à moi que tu demanderas compte de lui. Si je ne te le ramène pas, si je ne te le rends pas, je serai coupable à jamais devant toi.
10 Indeed, if we had not wasted so much time we should have been there and back twice by now!'	10 Mais si nous n’avions pas tant tardé, nous serions déjà revenus deux fois.”
11 Then their father Israel said to them, 'If it must be so, then do this: take some of the country's bestproducts in your baggage and take them to the man as a gift: some balsam, some honey, gum tragacanth, resin,pistachio nuts and almonds.	11 Leur père Israël leur dit: “S’il en est ainsi, faites donc ce que je vous dis. Prenez dans vos sacs des produits du pays, et emportez-les pour faire un cadeau à cet homme: un peu de résine pour le brûle-parfum, un peu de miel, de la gomme parfumée, des pistaches et des amandes.
12 Take double the amount of money with you and return the money put back in the mouths of yoursacks; it may have been a mistake.	12 Puis emportez le double d’argent, ainsi vous rendrez l’argent qu’on a remis dans vos sacs: peut-être est-ce une erreur.
13 Take your brother, and go back to the man.	13 Prenez donc votre frère, et allez retrouver cet homme.
14 May El Shaddai move the man to be kind to you, and al ow you to bring back your other brother andBenjamin. As for me, if I must be bereaved, bereaved I must be.'	14 Que le Dieu de la Steppe vous accorde de trouver grâce à ses yeux, pour qu’il vous laisse repartir avec votre frère et avec Benjamin. Quant à moi, si je dois être privé de mes enfants, que j’en sois privé!”
15 The men took this gift; they took double the amount of money with them, and Benjamin. They set off,went down to Egypt and presented themselves before Joseph.	15 Les hommes chargèrent donc ces cadeaux et prirent le double d’argent, ils emmenèrent aussi Benjamin. Ils descendirent en Égypte et se présentèrent devant Joseph.
16 When Joseph saw Benjamin with them he said to his chamberlain, 'Take these men into the house.Slaughter a beast and prepare it, for these men are to eat with me at midday.'	16 Lorsque Joseph vit que Benjamin était avec eux, il dit à son intendant: “Fais entrer ces hommes chez moi, fais tuer une bête et préparer la viande, car ces hommes mangeront avec moi à midi.”
17 The man did as Joseph had ordered, and took the men to Joseph's house.	17 L’intendant fit ce que Joseph avait commandé; il conduisit les hommes dans la maison de Joseph.
18 The men were afraid at being taken to Joseph's house and said, 'We are being taken there becauseof the money replaced in our sacks the first time. They wil set on us; they wil fal on us and make slaves of us,and take our donkeys too.'	18 Quand on les fit entrer dans la maison de Joseph, les hommes eurent peur. Ils se disaient: “C’est à cause de l’argent qu’on a remis dans nos sacs la fois précédente, qu’ils nous font entrer. Ils vont se jeter sur nous tout-à-coup et ils nous prendront comme esclaves avec nos ânes!”
19 So they went up to Joseph's chamberlain and spoke to him at the entrance to the house.	19 Aussi, dès leur arrivée à la maison, ils se dirigèrent vers l’intendant de Joseph. Ils lui dirent:
20 'By your leave, sir,' they said, 'we came down once before to get supplies,	20 “De grâce, mon seigneur, nous sommes déjà venus il y a quelque temps pour acheter de la nourriture.
21 and when we reached camp and opened our sacks, there was each man's money in the mouth of hissack, to the full. But we have brought it back with us,	21 Il s’est trouvé qu’à la halte du soir, lorsque nous avons ouvert nos sacs, l’argent de chacun d’entre nous, avec le compte exact, était à l’entrée de son sac. Aussi l’avons-nous rapporté.
22 and we have brought more money with us for the supplies. We do not know who put our money inour sacks.'	22 Nous ne savons pas qui avait mis notre argent dans nos sacs, mais nous avons pris une nouvelle somme d’argent pour acheter de la nourriture.”
23 'Set your minds at ease,' he replied, 'do not be afraid. Your God and the God of your father puttreasure in your sacks for you. I received your money.' And he brought Simeon out to them.	23 Il leur répondit: “Soyez en paix, soyez sans crainte: votre Dieu, le Dieu de votre père a mis pour vous un trésor dans vos sacs, car votre argent m’était bien parvenu.” Puis il fit délier Siméon devant eux.
24 The man then took the men into Joseph's house. He offered them water to wash their feet, and gavetheir donkeys fodder.	24 L’homme fit entrer les frères dans la maison de Joseph. Il leur donna de l’eau et ils se lavèrent les pieds. On donna aussi du fourrage à leurs ânes.
25 They arranged their gift while they waited for Joseph to come at midday, for they had heard theywere to dine there.	25 Alors ils préparèrent leur cadeau en attendant l’arrivée de Joseph, car on leur avait dit qu’ils prendraient là leur repas de midi.
26 When Joseph arrived at the house they offered him the gift they had with them, bowing low beforehim.	26 Quand Joseph rentra à la maison, ils lui offrirent le cadeau qu’ils avaient dans les mains, puis ils se prosternèrent jusqu’à terre devant lui.
27 He greeted them pleasantly, asking, 'Is your father wel , the old man you told me of ? Is he stillalive?'	27 Il leur demanda comment ils allaient: “Votre père, dit-il, ce vieillard dont vous m’avez parlé, est-il en bonne santé? Est-il toujours en vie?”
28 'Your servant our father is wel ,' they replied, 'he is stil alive,' and they bowed respectful y.	28 Ils lui répondirent: “Ton serviteur, notre père, est en bonne santé, il est encore vivant.” Puis ils s’agenouillèrent et se prosternèrent.
29 Looking about, he saw his brother Benjamin, his mother's son. 'Is this your youngest brother', heasked, 'of whom you told me?' And he added, 'God be good to you, my son.'	29 Joseph leva les yeux et vit son frère Benjamin, le fils de sa mère: “Est-ce bien là votre plus jeune frère dont vous m’avez parlé?” Se tournant vers lui, il lui dit: “Que Dieu te bénisse, mon fils!”
30 Joseph hurried out; so strong was the affection he felt for his brother that he wanted to cry. He wentinto his room and there he wept.	30 Alors, soudain, Joseph eut envie de pleurer car il était bouleversé à la vue de son frère. Il entra donc dans ses appartements et pleura.
31 After washing his face he returned and, controlling himself, gave the order: 'Serve the meal.'	31 Puis il se lava le visage et sortit. Il se reprit et dit: “Servez le repas!”
32 He was served separately; so were they, and so were the Egyptians who ate in his household, forthe Egyptians could not take food with Hebrews; Egyptians have a horror of doing so.	32 On servit Joseph à part, on servit à part ses frères, à part encore les Égyptiens invités; car les Égyptiens ne peuvent pas prendre un repas avec des Hébreux: ce serait une honte pour l’Égypte.
33 They were placed facing him in order of seniority, from the eldest to the youngest, and the menlooked at one another in amazement.	33 Ils s’assirent donc en face de lui, chacun selon son rang, de l’aîné jusqu’au plus jeune. Ils se regardaient l’un l’autre, stupéfaits.
34 He had portions carried to them from his own dish, the portion for Benjamin being five times largerthan any of the others. And they feasted with him and drank freely.	34 Alors Joseph prit dans les plats qui étaient devant lui des portions pour chacun d’eux, mais la portion de Benjamin était cinq fois plus grande que la portion des autres. Avec lui ils burent du vin au point d’être plutôt gais.
