NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
Now Joseph had been taken down into Egypt. Potiphar the Egyptian, one of Pharaoh's officials andcommander of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him down there.1 Igitur Ioseph ductus est in Aegyptum; emitque eum Pu tiphar eunuchus pharaonis, princeps satellitum, vir Aegyptius, de manu Ismaelitarum, a quibus perductus erat.
Yahweh was with Joseph, and everything he undertook was successful. He lodged in the house of hisEgyptian master,2 Fuitque Dominus cum eo, et erat vir in cunctis prospere agens habitabatque in domo domini sui.
and when his master saw how Yahweh was with him and how Yahweh made everything he undertooksuccessful,3 Qui optime noverat esse Dominum cum eo et omnia, quae gereret, ab eo dirigi in manu illius.
he was pleased with Joseph and made him his personal attendant; and his master put him in chargeof his household, entrusting him with al his possessions.4 Invenitque loseph gratiam coram domino suo et ministrabat ei. Et factum est, postquam praeposuit eum domui suae et omnia, quae possidebat, tradidit in manum eius,
And from the time he put him in charge of his household and al his possessions, Yahweh blessed theEgyptian's household out of consideration for Joseph; Yahweh's blessing extended to al his possessions, bothhousehold and estate.5 benedixit Dominus domui Aegyptii propter Ioseph, et benedictio Domini erat in omni possessione eius tam in aedibus quam in agris.
So he left Joseph to handle al his possessions, and with him there, concerned himself with nothingbeyond the food he ate. Now Joseph was wel built and handsome,6 Et reliquit omnia, quae possidebat, in manu Ioseph nec cum eo quidquam aliud noverat nisi panem, quo vescebatur. Erat autem Ioseph pulchra facie et decorus aspectu.
and it happened some time later that his master's wife cast her eyes on Joseph and said, 'Sleep withme.'7 Post haec ergo iniecit uxor domini eius oculos suos in Ioseph et ait: “ Dormi mecum ”.
But he refused. 'Look,' he said to his master's wife, 'with me here, my master does not concernhimself with what happens in the house, having entrusted al his possessions to me.8 Qui nequaquam acquiescens dixit ad eam: “ Ecce dominus meus, omnibus mihi traditis, non curat de ulla re in domo sua,
He himself wields no more authority in this house than I do. He has exempted nothing from me exceptyourself, because you are his wife. How could I do anything so wicked, and sin against God?'9 nec quisquam maior est in domo hac quam ego, et nihil mihi subtraxit praeter te, quae uxor eius es. Quomodo ergo possum malum hoc magnum facere et peccare in Deum? ”.
Although she spoke to Joseph day after day, he would not agree to sleep with her or be with her.10 Huiuscemodi verbis per singulos dies et mulier molesta erat adulescenti, et ille recusabat stuprum.
But one day when Joseph came into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the householdhappened to be indoors,11 Accidit autem quadam die, ut intraret Ioseph domum et opus suum absque arbitris faceret;
she caught hold of him by his tunic and said, 'Sleep with me.' But he left the tunic in her hand, took tohis heels and got out.12 illa, apprehensa lacinia vestimenti eius, dixit: “ Dormi mecum ”. Qui, relicto in manu illius pallio, fugit et egressus est foras.
When she saw that he had left the tunic in her hands as he ran out,13 Cumque vidisset illum mulier vestem reliquisse in manibus suis et fugisse foras,
she cal ed her servants and said to them, 'Look at this! My husband brought in a Hebrew to make afool of me! He burst in on me, but I screamed,14 vocavit homines domus suae et ait ad eos: “ En introduxit virum Hebraeum, ut illuderet nobis; ingressus est ad me, ut coiret mecum. Cumque ego succlamassem,
and when he heard me scream, he left his tunic beside me and ran out of the house.'15 et audisset vocem meam, reliquit pallium, quod tenebam, et fugit foras ”.
She kept his tunic by her until his master came home.16 Retentum pallium ostendit marito revertenti domum
Then she told him the same tale, 'The Hebrew slave you brought to us burst in on me to make a foolof me.17 et secundum verba haec locuta est: “ Ingressus est ad me servus Hebraeus, quem adduxisti, ut illuderet mihi;
But when I screamed, he left his tunic beside me and ran away.'18 cumque audisset me clamare, reliquit pallium, quod tenebam, et fugit foras ”.
When his master heard his wife say, 'This was how your slave treated me,' he became furious.19 Dominus, auditis his verbis coniugis, iratus est valde;
Joseph's master had him arrested and committed to the gaol where the king's prisoners were kept.And there in gaol he stayed.20 tradiditque Ioseph in carcerem, ubi vincti regis custodiebantur. Et erat ibi clausus.
But Yahweh was with Joseph. He showed him faithful love and made him popular with the chiefgaoler.21 Fuit autem Dominus cum Ioseph et misertus illius dedit ei gratiam in conspectu principis carceris.
The chief gaoler put Joseph in charge of al the prisoners in the gaol, making him responsible foreverything done there.22 Qui tradidit in manu Ioseph universos vinctos, qui in custodia tenebantur, et, quidquid ibi faciendum erat, ipse faciebat,
The chief gaoler did not bother about anything put in his charge, since Yahweh was with him, andYahweh made everything he undertook successful.23 nec princeps carceris spectabat quidquid in manu eius erat: Dominus enim erat cum illo et omnia opera eius dirigebat.
