Genesis 39

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA CEI 2008
1 Now Joseph had been taken down into Egypt. Potiphar the Egyptian, one of Pharaoh's officials andcommander of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him down there.	1 Giuseppe era stato portato in Egitto, e Potifàr, eunuco del faraone e comandante delle guardie, un Egiziano, lo acquistò da quegli Ismaeliti che l’avevano condotto laggiù.
2 Yahweh was with Joseph, and everything he undertook was successful. He lodged in the house of hisEgyptian master,	2 Il Signore fu con Giuseppe: a lui tutto riusciva bene e rimase nella casa dell’Egiziano, suo padrone.
3 and when his master saw how Yahweh was with him and how Yahweh made everything he undertooksuccessful,	3 Il suo padrone si accorse che il Signore era con lui e che il Signore faceva riuscire per mano sua quanto egli intraprendeva.
4 he was pleased with Joseph and made him his personal attendant; and his master put him in chargeof his household, entrusting him with al his possessions.	4 Così Giuseppe trovò grazia agli occhi di lui e divenne suo servitore personale; anzi, quello lo nominò suo maggiordomo e gli diede in mano tutti i suoi averi.
5 And from the time he put him in charge of his household and al his possessions, Yahweh blessed theEgyptian's household out of consideration for Joseph; Yahweh's blessing extended to al his possessions, bothhousehold and estate.	5 Da quando egli lo aveva fatto suo maggiordomo e incaricato di tutti i suoi averi, il Signore benedisse la casa dell’Egiziano grazie a Giuseppe e la benedizione del Signore fu su quanto aveva, sia in casa sia nella campagna.
6 So he left Joseph to handle al his possessions, and with him there, concerned himself with nothingbeyond the food he ate. Now Joseph was wel built and handsome,	6 Così egli lasciò tutti i suoi averi nelle mani di Giuseppe e non si occupava più di nulla, se non del cibo che mangiava. Ora Giuseppe era bello di forma e attraente di aspetto.
7 and it happened some time later that his master's wife cast her eyes on Joseph and said, 'Sleep withme.'	7 Dopo questi fatti, la moglie del padrone mise gli occhi su Giuseppe e gli disse: «Còricati con me!».
8 But he refused. 'Look,' he said to his master's wife, 'with me here, my master does not concernhimself with what happens in the house, having entrusted al his possessions to me.	8 Ma egli rifiutò e disse alla moglie del suo padrone: «Vedi, il mio signore non mi domanda conto di quanto è nella sua casa e mi ha dato in mano tutti i suoi averi.
9 He himself wields no more authority in this house than I do. He has exempted nothing from me exceptyourself, because you are his wife. How could I do anything so wicked, and sin against God?'	9 Lui stesso non conta più di me in questa casa; non mi ha proibito nient’altro, se non te, perché sei sua moglie. Come dunque potrei fare questo grande male e peccare contro Dio?».
10 Although she spoke to Joseph day after day, he would not agree to sleep with her or be with her.	10 E benché giorno dopo giorno ella parlasse a Giuseppe in tal senso, egli non accettò di coricarsi insieme per unirsi a lei.
11 But one day when Joseph came into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the householdhappened to be indoors,	11 Un giorno egli entrò in casa per fare il suo lavoro, mentre non c’era alcuno dei domestici.
12 she caught hold of him by his tunic and said, 'Sleep with me.' But he left the tunic in her hand, took tohis heels and got out.	12 Ella lo afferrò per la veste, dicendo: «Còricati con me!». Ma egli le lasciò tra le mani la veste, fuggì e se ne andò fuori.
13 When she saw that he had left the tunic in her hands as he ran out,	13 Allora lei, vedendo che egli le aveva lasciato tra le mani la veste ed era fuggito fuori,
14 she cal ed her servants and said to them, 'Look at this! My husband brought in a Hebrew to make afool of me! He burst in on me, but I screamed,	14 chiamò i suoi domestici e disse loro: «Guardate, ci ha condotto in casa un Ebreo per divertirsi con noi! Mi si è accostato per coricarsi con me, ma io ho gridato a gran voce.
15 and when he heard me scream, he left his tunic beside me and ran out of the house.'	15 Egli, appena ha sentito che alzavo la voce e chiamavo, ha lasciato la veste accanto a me, è fuggito e se ne è andato fuori».
16 She kept his tunic by her until his master came home.	16 Ed ella pose accanto a sé la veste di lui finché il padrone venne a casa.
17 Then she told him the same tale, 'The Hebrew slave you brought to us burst in on me to make a foolof me.	17 Allora gli disse le stesse cose: «Quel servo ebreo, che tu ci hai condotto in casa, mi si è accostato per divertirsi con me.
18 But when I screamed, he left his tunic beside me and ran away.'	18 Ma appena io ho gridato e ho chiamato, ha abbandonato la veste presso di me ed è fuggito fuori».
19 When his master heard his wife say, 'This was how your slave treated me,' he became furious.	19 Il padrone, all’udire le parole che sua moglie gli ripeteva: «Proprio così mi ha fatto il tuo servo!», si accese d’ira.
20 Joseph's master had him arrested and committed to the gaol where the king's prisoners were kept.And there in gaol he stayed.	20 Il padrone prese Giuseppe e lo mise nella prigione, dove erano detenuti i carcerati del re. Così egli rimase là in prigione.
21 But Yahweh was with Joseph. He showed him faithful love and made him popular with the chiefgaoler.	21 Ma il Signore fu con Giuseppe, gli accordò benevolenza e gli fece trovare grazia agli occhi del comandante della prigione.
22 The chief gaoler put Joseph in charge of al the prisoners in the gaol, making him responsible foreverything done there.	22 Così il comandante della prigione affidò a Giuseppe tutti i carcerati che erano nella prigione, e quanto c’era da fare là dentro lo faceva lui.
23 The chief gaoler did not bother about anything put in his charge, since Yahweh was with him, andYahweh made everything he undertook successful.	23 Il comandante della prigione non si prendeva più cura di nulla di quanto era affidato a Giuseppe, perché il Signore era con lui e il Signore dava successo a tutto quanto egli faceva.
