Genesis 32

NEW JERUSALEM	Biblia Maria
1 Early next morning, Laban kissed his grandchildren and daughters and blessed them. Then Laban leftto return home.	1 No dia seguinte, pela ma­nhã, Labão beijou seus fi­lhos e suas filhas; abençoou-os e retomou o caminho de sua casa.
2 While Jacob was going on his way, angels of God encountered him,	2 Jacó prosseguiu o seu caminho e encontrou uns anjos de Deus.*
3 and on seeing them he said, 'This is God's camp,' and he named the place Mahanaim.	3 Ao vê-los, exclamou: “É aqui o acampamento de Deus!”. Por isso, deu àquele lugar o nome de Maanaim.
4 Jacob sent messengers ahead of him to his brother Esau in Seir, the open country of Edom,	4 Despachou diante de si mensagei­ros a seu irmão Esaú, na terra de Seir, nos campos de Edom.
5 with these instructions, 'Say this to my lord Esau, "Here is the message of your servant Jacob: I havebeen staying with Laban and have been delayed there until now,	5 E deu-lhes esta ordem: “Eis o que direis ao meu senhor Esaú: Assim fala o teu servo Jacó: Habitei em casa de Labão onde estive até o dia de hoje.
6 and I own oxen, beasts of burden and flocks, and men and women slaves. I send news of this to mylord in the hope of winning your favour." '	6 Possuo bois, jumentos, ovelhas, servos e servas, e mando agora anunciá-lo ao meu senhor para encontrar graça diante dele”.
7 The messengers returned to Jacob and told him, 'We went to your brother Esau, and he is already onhis way to meet you; there are four hundred men with him.'	7 Os mensageiros voltaram a Jacó, dizendo: “Fomos ter com Esaú: ele vem ao teu encontro com quatrocentos homens”.
8 Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed. He divided the people with him, and the flocks and cattle,into two camps,	8 Jacó foi tomado de pavor e de angústia. Dividiu em dois grupos a gente que estava com ele, assim como as ovelhas, os bois e os camelos.
9 thinking, 'If Esau comes to one of the camps and attacks it, the remaining camp may be able toescape.'	9 “Se Esaú – disse ele consigo – atacar um dos grupos e o destruir, ao menos o outro se salvará.”
10 Jacob said, 'God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, Yahweh who told me, "Go backto your native land and I will be good to you,"	10 Depois Jacó disse: “Deus de meu pai Abraão, Deus de meu pai Isaac, Senhor que me disses­ses: Volta para a tua terra, para o meio de tua parentela, e eu te beneficiarei,
11 I am unworthy of al the faithful love and constancy you have shown your servant. I had only my staffwhen I crossed this Jordan, and now I have grown into two camps.	11 eu sou indigno de todos os favores e de toda a fidelidade que tendes testemunhado ao vosso servo. Só tinha o meu bastão quando atravessei este Jordão, e eis que possuo agora dois acampamentos.
12 I implore you, save me from my brother Esau's clutches, for I am afraid that he may come and attackme, mothers and children alike.	12 Salvai-me, eu vos peço, das mãos de meu irmão Esaú, pois temo que ele me venha atacar, sem poupar nem mãe nem filhos.
13 Yet it was you who said, "I shal be very good to you, and make your descendants like the sand ofthe sea, which is too numerous to count." '	13 Entretanto, vós me dissestes: Eu te beneficiarei e tornarei tua posteridade inumerável como os grãos de areia do mar”.
14 Then Jacob passed that night there. From what he had with him he chose a gift for his brother Esau:	14 Jacó passou a noite naquele lugar. Escolheu entre os bens que possuía um presente para o seu irmão Esaú:
15 two hundred she-goats and twenty he-goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,	15 duzentas cabras, vinte bodes, duzentas ovelhas, vinte carneiros,
16 thirty camels in milk with their calves, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten male.	16 trinta came­las com suas crias, quarenta vacas, dez touros, vinte jumentas e dez jumentos.
17 He put them in the charge of his servants, in separate droves, and told his servants, 'Go ahead ofme, leaving a space between each drove and the next.'	17 Entregou-os aos servos, cada rebanho à parte, e disse-lhes: “Ide adiante de mim, e haja uma distância entre cada rebanho”.
18 He gave the leading man this order: 'When my brother Esau meets you and asks, "Whose man areyou? Where are you going? Whose are those animals that you are driving?"	18 E deu esta ordem ao primeiro: “Quando meu irmão Esaú te encontrar e te perguntar quem és, aonde vais e a quem pertence o rebanho que conduzes,
19 you wil answer, "Your servant Jacob's. They are a gift sent to my lord Esau. And Jacob himself isjust behind us." '	19 responderás: Pertence ao teu servo Jacó; é um presente que ele manda ao meu senhor Esaú; ele mesmo vem atrás de nós”.
20 He gave the same order to the second and the third, and to al who were fol owing the droves. 'Thatis what you must say to Esau when you find him.	20 Deu a mesma ordem ao segundo, ao terceiro e a todos os que conduziam os reba­nhos: “Quando encontrardes Esaú – disse ele – vós lhe direis a mesma coisa.
21 And you must add, "Your servant Jacob himself is just behind us." ' For he thought, 'If I conciliate him by sending a gift in advance, perhaps he will be well inclined towards me when I face him.'	21 E direis que seu servo Jacó vos segue”. “Eu o aplacarei – pensou ele – com este presente que me precede; e depois o verei pessoalmente; talvez me fará ele bom acolhimento.”
22 The gift went ahead of him, but he himself spent that night in the camp.	22 Foi, pois, o presente adiante dele, e ele ficou aquela noite no acampamento.
23 That same night he got up and, taking his two wives, his two slave-girls and his eleven children,crossed the ford of the Jabbok.	23 Naquela mesma noite, ele se levantou com suas duas mulheres, suas duas servas e seus onze filhos e passou o vau do Jaboc.
24 After he had taken them across the stream, he sent al his possessions over too.	24 Tomou-os, e os fez passar a torrente com tudo o que lhe pertencia.
25 And Jacob was left alone. Then someone wrestled with him until daybreak	25 Jacó ficou só; e alguém lutava com ele até o romper da aurora.
26 who, seeing that he could not master him, struck him on the hip socket, and Jacob's hip wasdislocated as he wrestled with him.	26 Vendo que não podia vencê-lo, tocou-lhe aquele homem na articulação da coxa e esta deslocou-se, enquanto Jacó lutava com ele.
27 He said, 'Let me go, for day is breaking.' Jacob replied, 'I wil not let you go unless you bless me.'	27 E disse-lhe: “Deixa-me partir, porque a aurora se levanta”. “Não te deixarei partir – respondeu Jacó – antes que me tenhas abençoado.”
28 The other said, 'What is your name?' 'Jacob,' he replied.	28 Ele perguntou-lhe: “Qual é o teu nome?”. “Jacó.”*
29 He said, 'No longer are you to be cal ed Jacob, but Israel since you have shown your strengthagainst God and men and have prevailed.'	29 “Teu nome não será mais Jacó – tornou ele – mas Israel, porque lutaste com Deus e com os homens, e venceste.” Jacó pediu-lhe:
30 Then Jacob asked, 'Please tel me your name.' He replied, 'Why do you ask my name?' With that, heblessed him there.	30 “Peço-te que me digas qual é o teu nome”. “Por que me perguntas o meu nome?” – respondeu ele. E abençoou-o no mesmo lugar.*
31 Jacob named the place Peniel, 'Because I have seen God face to face,' he said, 'and have survived.'	31 Jacó chamou àquele lugar Fa­nuel, “porque – disse ele – eu vi a Deus face a face, e minha vida foi poupada”.
32 The sun rose as he passed Peniel, limping from his hip.	32 O sol levantava-se no horizonte, quando ele atravessou Fanuel. E coxeava de uma perna.
33 That is why to this day the Israelites do not eat the thigh sinew which is at the hip socket: because hehad struck Jacob at the hip socket on the thigh sinew.	33 É por isso que os israe­litas, ain­da hoje, não comem o nervo da articulação da coxa, porque aquele homem tinha tocado nesse nervo da articulação da coxa de Jacó.
