Genesis 31

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA TINTORI
1 Jacob learned that Laban's sons were saying, 'Jacob has taken everything that belonged to our father;it is at our father's expense that he has acquired al this wealth,'	1 Or Giacobbe senti che i figli di Labano dicevano: « Giacobbe ha tolto tutto quello che era di nostro padre ed è divenuto potente arricchendosi coi beni di lui »;
2 and Jacob also saw that Laban's manner towards him was not as it had been in the past.	2 osservò ancora che Labano non era verso di lui quel di prima,
3 Yahweh said to Jacob, 'Go back to the land of your ancestors, where you were born, and I shal bewith you.'	3 e di più il Signore gli diceva: « Torna nella terra dei tuoi padri, dei tuoi parenti ed io sarò teco ».
4 So Jacob had Rachel and Leah cal ed to the fields where his flocks were,	4 Fece adunque chiamare Rachele e Lia nel campo dove egli pasceva i greggi,
5 and he said to them, 'I can see that your father's manner towards me is not as it was in the past, butthe God of my father has been with me.	5 e disse loro: « Io mi accorgo che il vostro padre non è verso di me quel di prima; ma il Dio di mio padre è stato con me.
6 You yourselves know that I have worked for your father with al my might,	6 Voi ben sapete come ho servito al vostro padre con tutto il mio potere,
7 and that your father has tricked me, changing my wages ten times over, and yet God has not al owedhim to harm me.	7 mentre il vostro padre mi ha ingannato ed ha mutata dieci volte la mia mercede; ma Dio non gli ha permesso di farmi del male.
8 Whenever he said, "The spotted ones will be your wages," all the animals produced spotted young;whenever he said, "The striped ones wil be your wages," al the animals produced striped young.	8 Infatti, quando egli diceva: Saran tua mercede gli agnelli chiazzati, tutte le pecore figliavano agnelli chiazzati; quando al contrario diceva: Prenderai per tua mercede tutti gli agnelli bianchi, tutti i greggi figliavano agnelli bianchi.
9 Thus God has reclaimed your father's livestock and given it to me.	9 Così Dio ha tolto i beni di vostro padre e li ha dati a me.
10 Once, when the animals were on heat, I suddenly saw in a dream that the he-goats covering thefemales were striped or spotted or piebald.	10 Ora al tempo in cui le pecore dovevan concepire, io alzai gli occhi e vidi in sogno che i maschi i quali montavano le femmine erano chiazzati, macchiati e di vario colore.
11 In the dream the angel of God cal ed to me, "Jacob!" I said, "Here I am."	11 E l'angelo di Dio mi disse nel sogno: Giacobbe. Io risposi; Eccomi.
12 He said, "Now take note: al the he-goats covering the females are striped or spotted or piebald -- forI too have noted all the things that Laban has been doing to you,	12 Ed egli: « Alza i tuoi occhi e guarda come tutti i maschi che montan le femmine sono chiazzati, macchiati e screziati; perchè io ho veduto tutto quello che ti ha fatto Labano.
13 I am the God who appeared to you at Bethel, where you poured oil on a pillar and made a vow tome. On your feet, then, leave this country and return to the land of your birth." '	13 Io sono il Dio di Betel dove tu ungesti la pietra e mi facesti voto. Ora dunque levati, parti da questa terra e torna nel paese ove sei nato ».
14 In answer Rachel and Leah said to him, 'Are we stil likely to inherit anything from our father's estate?	14 Rachele e Lia risposero: « Abbiam forse qualche cosa o dell'eredità in casa di nostro padre?
15 Does he not think of us as outsiders now? For not only has he sold us, but he has completelyswal owed up the money he got for us.	15 Non ci ha egli trattate come straniere? non ci ha vendute? Non ha mangiato anche il nostro prezzo?
16 Al the wealth that God has reclaimed from our father belonged to us and our children in any case.So do whatever God has told you.'	16 Ma Dio ha prese le ricchezze del nostro padre e le ha date a noi e ai nostri figlioli: fa dunque tutto quello che Dio ti ha comandato ».
17 Forthwith, Jacob put his children and his wives on camels,	17 Allora Giacobbe si alzò, e messi i figlioli è le mogli sopra i cammelli, se ne parti,
18 and drove off all his livestock -- with al the possessions he had acquired, the livestock belonging tohim which he had acquired in Paddan-Aram -- to go to his father Isaac in Canaan.	18 prendendo tutto il suo, e i greggi e tutto ciò che aveva acquietato in Mesopotamia; e, se ne andò da Isacco suo padre nella terra di Cahaan.
19 Laban was away, shearing his sheep; Rachel in the meanwhile had appropriated the household idolsbelonging to her father,	19 Essendo in quel tempo andato Labano a tosare le sue pecore, Rachele rubò gli idoli di suo padre
20 and Jacob had outwitted Laban the Aramaean so that he would not be forewarned of his flight.	20 e Giacobbe non volle far sapere al suocero la sua fuga.
21 Thus he got away with all he had. He was soon across the River and heading for Mount Gilead.	21 Ma partito che fu con tutto quello che era suo, mentre, passato il fiume, si avanzava verso il monte di Galaad,
22 Three days later Laban was told that Jacob had fled.	22 il terzo giorno, la notizia della fuga di Giacobbe fu portata a Labano
23 Taking his brothers with him, he pursued him for seven days and overtook him at Mount Gilead.	23 il quale, presi seco i suoi fratelli, lo inseguì per sette giorni e lo raggiunse al monte di Galaad.
24 But God appeared to Laban the Aramaean in a dream that night and said to him, 'On no account sayanything whatever to Jacob.'	24 Ma in sogno vide Dio che gli diceva: « Guardati dal dir parole aspre a Giacobbe ».
25 Laban caught up with Jacob, who had pitched his tent in the hil s; and Laban pitched camp on MountGilead.	25 E Giacobbe aveva già tesa la sua tenda sul monte quando lo raggiunse coi suoi fratelli Labano che, piantata la sua tenda sullo stesso monte di Galaad,
26 Laban said to Jacob, 'What do you mean by outwitting me and then carrying off my daughters likeprisoners of war?	26 disse a Giacobbe: « Perchè hai tu agito così da menar via le mie figlie furtivamente, come prigioniere di guerra?
27 Why did you flee in secret, stealing away without letting me know, so that I could send you on yourway rejoicing, with songs and the music of tambourines and harps?	27 Perchè sei fuggito a mia insaputa, senza avvertirmi, chè io t'avrei accomiatato con feste e canti e timpani e cetre?
28 You did not even let me kiss my sons and daughters. You have behaved like a fool.	28 Non mi hai permesso nemmeno di dare un bacio ai miei figli e alle mie figlie! Hai operato da stolto,
29 It is in my power to harm you, but the God of your father said to me last night, "On no account sayanything whatever to Jacob."	29 e per questo ora potrei farti del male; ma il Dio del padre vostro ieri mi disse: Guardati dal parlare con asprezza a Giacobbe.
30 Now it may be you real y went because you had such a longing for your father's house, but why didyou steal my gods?'	30 Certo tu desideravi tornare dai tuoi e ti stimolava il desiderio della casa di tuo padre; ma perchè mi hai rubati i miei dèi? »
31 Jacob answered Laban, 'I was afraid, thinking you were going to snatch your daughters from me.	31 Giacobbe rispose: « In quanto all'esser partito a tua insaputa, l'ho fatto perchè temei che tu mi rapissi a forza le tue figlie;
32 But whoever is found in possession of your gods shall not remain alive. In the presence of ourbrothers, examine for yourself what I have, and take what is yours.' Now Jacob did not know that Rachel hadappropriated them.	32 quanto poi al furto di cui mi rimproveri, colui presso il quale troverai i tuoi dèi, chiunque sia, sarà messo a morte in presenza dei nostri fratelli. Cerca pure e prendi tutto quello che di tuo troverai presso di me ». Diceva questo, perchè non sapeva che Rachele avesse rubati gl'idoli.
33 Laban went into Jacob's tent, and then into Leah's tent and the tent of the two slave-girls, but hefound nothing. He came out of Leah's tent and went into Rachel's.	33 Labano adunque entrò nella tenda di Giacobbe, e di Lia, e delle due schiave, senza trovar nulla. Quando entrò nella tenda di Rachele,
34 Now Rachel had taken the household idols and put them inside a camel cushion, and was sitting onthem. Laban went through everything in the tent but found nothing.	34 essa in fretta nascose gl'idoli sotto il basto d'un cammello sopra cui sedette. E mentre Labano frugava tutta la tenda senza trovarli,
35 Then Rachel said to her father, 'Do not look angry, my lord, because I cannot rise in your presence,for I am as women are from time to time.' Laban searched but did not find the idols.	35 Rachele disse: «Non si sdegni il mio signore, s'io non posso alzarmi alla tua presenza, perchè ho proprio ora il solito incomodo delle donne ». Così fu delusa la sua ricerca fatta con tanta sollecitudine.
36 Then Jacob lost his temper and took Laban to task. And Jacob said to Laban, 'What is my offence,what is my crime, for you to have hounded me like this?	36 Allora Giacobbe, sdegnato, disse rimproverando: «Per qual mia colpa e per qual mio peccato mi sei corso dietro con tanto accanimento?
37 You have gone through al my belongings; have you found anything belonging to your household?Produce it here in the presence of my brothers and yours, and let them decide between the two of us.	37 Tu hai frugato fra tutta la mia roba; ebbene, che vi hai trovato di tutti i beni di casa tua? Mettilo qui alla presenza dei fratelli miei e dei fratelli tuoi, affinchè essi giudichino fra noi due.
38 In al the twenty years I was under you, your ewes and your she-goats never miscarried, and I neverate rams from your flock.	38 Per questo sono stato venti anni con te? Le tue pecore e le tue capre non furono sterili; io non ho mangiato gli arieti del tuo gregge;
39 Those mauled I never brought back to you, but bore the loss myself. You demanded compensationfrom me, whether the animal was stolen in daylight or at night.	39 io non ti ho fatto vedere ciò che le fiere avevan rapito; io pagava ogni danno, e tu esigevi da me tutto quello che era rubato.
40 In the daytime the heat devoured me, and frost at night; I never had a good night's sleep.	40 Il giorno e la notte ero consumato o dal caldo o dal gelo, e il sonno, fuggiva dai miei occhi.
41 It was like this for the twenty years I spent in your household. Fourteen years I slaved for you for your two daughters, and six years for your flock, since you changed my wages ten times over.	41 Così io t'ho servito in casa tua per vent'anni: quattordici per le figlie, sei per i tuoi, greggi; e tu per ben dieci volte mi hai barattata la mercede.
42 If the God of my father, the God of Abraham, the Kinsman of Isaac, had not been with me, you wouldhave sent me away empty-handed. But God saw my plight and my labours, and last night he deliveredjudgement.'	42 Se il Dio del mio padre Abramo, il Temuto da Isacco non mi avesse assistito, ora forse tu mi avresti mandato via nudo; ma Dio ha veduta la mia afflizione, la fatica delle mie mani, e ieri ti sgridò ».
43 Laban replied to Jacob, 'These daughters are my daughters and these children are my children, thislivestock is my livestock: everything you see belongs to me. But what can I do today about my daughters here orabout the children they have borne?	43 Labano gli rispose: «Le mie figlie, e i figli, e i tuoi greggi e quanto vedi è cosa mia: e che potrei fare contro i figli e i nipoti miei?
44 So come, let us make a pact, you and me . . . , and let that serve as a witness between us.'	44 Vieni dunque, e facciamo un'alleanza che serva di testimonianza fra me e te ».
45 Jacob then took a stone and set it up as a memorial.	45 Giacobbe adunque prese una pietra e la eresse in monumento,
46 Jacob said to his kinsmen, 'Col ect some stones,' and gathering some stones they made a cairn.They had a meal there, on the cairn, and	46 poi disse ai suoi fratelli: « Portate delle pietre ». Ed essi, radunatene parecchie, ne fecero un mucchio, sopra il quale mangiarono.
47 Laban cal ed it Jegar-Sahadutha while Jacob called it Galeed.	47 Labano lo chiamò il Mucchio del testimone, e Giacobbe, il Cumulo della testimonianza, ciascuno secondo la proprietà del suo linguaggio.
48 Laban said, 'May this cairn be a witness between us today.' That is why he named it Galeed,	48 E Labano disse: « Questo mucchio sarà oggi testimone fra me e te. — Per questo quel mucchio fu chiamato Galaad, cioè Mucchio del testimone. —
49 and also Mizpah, because he said, 'Let Yahweh act as watchman between us when we are nolonger in sight of each other.	49 Che il Signore ci guardi e ci giudichi, quando saremo separati l'uno dall'altro.
50 If you il -treat my daughters or marry other women besides my daughters, even though no one bewith us, remember: God is witness between us.'	50 Se tu maltratterai le me figlie, e aggiungerai ad esse altre mogli, nessuno è testimone delle nostre parole se non Dio, il quale è presente e ci vede ».
51 Then Laban said to Jacob, 'Here is this cairn I have thrown up between us, and here the pil ar.	51 E disse ancora a Giacobbe: « Ecco, il mucchio e la pietra che ho eretta fra me e te sarà testimone.
52 This cairn is a witness, and the pil ar is a witness, that I am not to cross to your side of this cairn andyou are not to cross to my side of this cairn and pillar, with hostile intent.	52 Questo mucchio, io dico, e questa pietra rendano testimonianza, se io lo passerò per venire a te e se tu lo passerai per venire a me con l'intenzione di far del male,
53 May the God of Abraham and the god of Nahor judge between us.' Then Jacob swore by theKinsman of his father Isaac.	53 il Dio d'Abramo, il Dio di Nacor, il Dio del padre loro sia giudice fra noi ». Giacobbe allora giurò per il Temuto da Isacco suo padre,
54 He offered a sacrifice on the mountain and invited his kinsmen to the meal. They ate the meal, andpassed the night on the mountain.	54 e immolate sul monte le vittime, invitò i suoi fratelli a mangiar del pane. E mangiato che ebbero, si fermarono ancora li.
	55 La mattina, avanti giorno, Labano si alzò, e baciati i figli e le sue figlie, li benedisse e se ne tornò a casa sua.
