Genesis 31

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA RICCIOTTI
1 Jacob learned that Laban's sons were saying, 'Jacob has taken everything that belonged to our father;it is at our father's expense that he has acquired al this wealth,'	1 - Ora Giacobbe, avendo udito i discorsi dei figli di Labano che dicevano: «Giacobbe ha preso tutto quello ch'era di nostro padre, e si è fatto ricco e potente coi beni di lui»;
2 and Jacob also saw that Laban's manner towards him was not as it had been in the past.	2 vedendo anche il contegno di Labano, che non era più con lui come sin allora;
3 Yahweh said to Jacob, 'Go back to the land of your ancestors, where you were born, and I shal bewith you.'	3 e soprattutto dicendogli il Signore: «Torna nella terra de' tuoi padri, ed alla tua parentela, e sarò teco»;
4 So Jacob had Rachel and Leah cal ed to the fields where his flocks were,	4 mandò a chiamare Rachele e Lia nel campo dove pascevano i greggi,
5 and he said to them, 'I can see that your father's manner towards me is not as it was in the past, butthe God of my father has been with me.	5 e disse loro: «Veggo in viso a vostro padre che egli non è più a mio riguardo come sin qui. Iddio di mio padre è stato con me,
6 You yourselves know that I have worked for your father with al my might,	6 e voi ben sapete che con tutte le mie forze ho servito il padre vostro.
7 and that your father has tricked me, changing my wages ten times over, and yet God has not al owedhim to harm me.	7 Ma egli mi ha circonvenuto, m'ha cambiato dieci volte la mercede, eppure Dio non gli ha permesso di nuocermi.
8 Whenever he said, "The spotted ones will be your wages," all the animals produced spotted young;whenever he said, "The striped ones wil be your wages," al the animals produced striped young.	8 Quando disse: - Avrai per mercede le pecore variate, - tutte le pecore partorivano macchiato. Quando invece disse: - Ti prenderai per mercede i capi bianchi, - tutti i greggi partorivano bianco.
9 Thus God has reclaimed your father's livestock and given it to me.	9 Iddio prese i beni del padre vostro e li dette a me.
10 Once, when the animals were on heat, I suddenly saw in a dream that the he-goats covering thefemales were striped or spotted or piebald.	10 Quando infatti era venuto il tempo che le pecore concepivano, levando gli occhi, vidi in sogno accoppiarsi alle femmine i maschi variati, macchiati, o di diverso colore.
11 In the dream the angel of God cal ed to me, "Jacob!" I said, "Here I am."	11 L'angelo di Dio in sogno mi chiamò: - Giacobbe. - Io risposi: - Eccomi. -
12 He said, "Now take note: al the he-goats covering the females are striped or spotted or piebald -- forI too have noted all the things that Laban has been doing to you,	12 Ed egli: - Alza gli occhi, e vedi accoppiarsi alle femmine tutti i maschi variati, macchiati o spruzzati. Ho visto infatti tutto quel che ti ha fatto Labano.
13 I am the God who appeared to you at Bethel, where you poured oil on a pillar and made a vow tome. On your feet, then, leave this country and return to the land of your birth." '	13 Io sono il Dio di Betel, dove consacrasti la pietra, e mi facesti un voto. Or dunque alzati, ed esci da questa terra per tornare in quella che nascesti -».
14 In answer Rachel and Leah said to him, 'Are we stil likely to inherit anything from our father's estate?	14 Rachele e Lia risposero: «È forse rimasto a noi qualcosa dei beni o dell'eredità della casa del padre nostro?
15 Does he not think of us as outsiders now? For not only has he sold us, but he has completelyswal owed up the money he got for us.	15 Non ci ha egli considerate come straniere, vendendoci, e mangiandosi il nostro prezzo?
16 Al the wealth that God has reclaimed from our father belonged to us and our children in any case.So do whatever God has told you.'	16 Ma Dio ha preso le sostanze del padre nostro, e le ha date in mano a noi ed ai nostri figliuoli. Fa' dunque tutto quello che Dio t'ha comandato».
17 Forthwith, Jacob put his children and his wives on camels,	17 S'alzò dunque Giacobbe, e caricati i figliuoli e le mogli sopra i cammelli, partì.
18 and drove off all his livestock -- with al the possessions he had acquired, the livestock belonging tohim which he had acquired in Paddan-Aram -- to go to his father Isaac in Canaan.	18 Prese tutte le sue sostanze, i greggi, e tutto quello che aveva acquistato in Mesopotamia, indirizzandosi verso Isacco suo padre nella terra di Canaan.
19 Laban was away, shearing his sheep; Rachel in the meanwhile had appropriated the household idolsbelonging to her father,	19 In quel tempo Labano era andato alla tosatura delle pecore, e Rachele portò via gli idoletti del padre suo.
20 and Jacob had outwitted Laban the Aramaean so that he would not be forewarned of his flight.	20 Nè volle Giacobbe far sapere al suocero che egli partiva.
21 Thus he got away with all he had. He was soon across the River and heading for Mount Gilead.	21 Essendo dunque partito con tutto ciò che gli s'apparteneva, passato che ebbe il fiume, andando egli verso il monte Galaad,
22 Three days later Laban was told that Jacob had fled.	22 al terzo giorno Labano seppe che Giacobbe era fuggito.
23 Taking his brothers with him, he pursued him for seven days and overtook him at Mount Gilead.	23 Presi con sè i fratelli, lo inseguì per sette giorni, e lo raggiunse al monte Galaad.
24 But God appeared to Laban the Aramaean in a dream that night and said to him, 'On no account sayanything whatever to Jacob.'	24 Ma vide in sogno Dio che gli diceva: «Bada bene di non dir niente di duro contro Giacobbe».
25 Laban caught up with Jacob, who had pitched his tent in the hil s; and Laban pitched camp on MountGilead.	25 Questi aveva già stese le tende sul monte. Quegli, avendolo raggiunto co' suoi fratelli, si accampò sul monte medesimo.
26 Laban said to Jacob, 'What do you mean by outwitting me and then carrying off my daughters likeprisoners of war?	26 E disse a Giacobbe: «Perchè hai fatto questo, di portarmi via le figliuole di nascosto, quasi prigioniere di guerra?
27 Why did you flee in secret, stealing away without letting me know, so that I could send you on yourway rejoicing, with songs and the music of tambourines and harps?	27 Perchè sei voluto fuggire a mia insaputa, senza avvisarmene, ch'io t'avrei accompagnato giubilante con canti e timpani e cetre?
28 You did not even let me kiss my sons and daughters. You have behaved like a fool.	28 Non mi hai permesso di baciare i figli e le figlie mie. Hai agito stoltamente. Ora
29 It is in my power to harm you, but the God of your father said to me last night, "On no account sayanything whatever to Jacob."	29 potrebbe la mia mano renderti del male; sennonchè, il Dio del padre vostro m'ha detto ieri: - Bada di non dir niente di duro a Giacobbe. -
30 Now it may be you real y went because you had such a longing for your father's house, but why didyou steal my gods?'	30 Sia pure che tu desiderassi tornare dai tuoi, e ti stesse in cuore la casa del padre tuo; perchè però m'hai rubato i miei dèi?».
31 Jacob answered Laban, 'I was afraid, thinking you were going to snatch your daughters from me.	31 Rispose Giacobbe: «Quanto all'esser partito a tua insaputa, ebbi paura che tu volessi a forza portarmi via le tue figliuole.
32 But whoever is found in possession of your gods shall not remain alive. In the presence of ourbrothers, examine for yourself what I have, and take what is yours.' Now Jacob did not know that Rachel hadappropriated them.	32 Quanto poi al furto del quale mi accusi, chiunque tu trovi avere i tuoi dèi, sarà messo a morte in presenza de' nostri fratelli. Cerca e riprenditi qualunque cosa tu troverai del tuo presso di me». Questo diceva, ignorando che fosse stata Rachele a portar via gli idoletti.
33 Laban went into Jacob's tent, and then into Leah's tent and the tent of the two slave-girls, but hefound nothing. He came out of Leah's tent and went into Rachel's.	33 Entrato dunque Labano nella tenda di Giacobbe, di Lia, e delle due ancelle, niente trovò. Quando poi entrò nella tenda di Rachele,
34 Now Rachel had taken the household idols and put them inside a camel cushion, and was sitting onthem. Laban went through everything in the tent but found nothing.	34 essa nascose in fretta gli idoli sotto la sella del cammello, e vi si pose a sedere. Frugando egli tutta la tenda, senza niente trovare,
35 Then Rachel said to her father, 'Do not look angry, my lord, because I cannot rise in your presence,for I am as women are from time to time.' Laban searched but did not find the idols.	35 gli disse: «Non s'adiri il mio Signore, se non posso alzarmi in piedi alla tua presenza, perchè ho ora il consueto incomodo delle donne». Così restò delusa la sua ricerca fatta con tanta sollecitudine.
36 Then Jacob lost his temper and took Laban to task. And Jacob said to Laban, 'What is my offence,what is my crime, for you to have hounded me like this?	36 Allora Giacobbe sdegnato lo rimproverò, dicendo: «Per qual mia colpa, o per qual mia offesa ti sei così riscaldato contro di me,
37 You have gone through al my belongings; have you found anything belonging to your household?Produce it here in the presence of my brothers and yours, and let them decide between the two of us.	37 ed hai frugato tutta la mia suppellettile? Che cos'hai trovato, di tutti gli averi di casa tua? Mettilo qui, innanzi ai fratelli miei ed ai tuoi, e giudicheranno fra me e te.
38 In al the twenty years I was under you, your ewes and your she-goats never miscarried, and I neverate rams from your flock.	38 Per questo fui con te venti anni? Le tue pecore e le tue capre non furono sterili; io non mangiai dei montoni del tuo gregge;
39 Those mauled I never brought back to you, but bore the loss myself. You demanded compensationfrom me, whether the animal was stolen in daylight or at night.	39 se le fiere rapivano qualche capo, non te lo facevo vedere, e ripagavo io tutto il danno; ma tu, tutto quel che veniva rubato, me lo richiedevi.
40 In the daytime the heat devoured me, and frost at night; I never had a good night's sleep.	40 Giorno e notte, ero bruciato dal sole o dal freddo, ed il sonno se n'andava dagli occhi miei.
41 It was like this for the twenty years I spent in your household. Fourteen years I slaved for you for your two daughters, and six years for your flock, since you changed my wages ten times over.	41 Così io t'ho servito in casa tua per vent'anni: quattordici per le figliuole, e sei per i tuoi greggi; e tu m'hai rimutato la mercede da dieci volte.
42 If the God of my father, the God of Abraham, the Kinsman of Isaac, had not been with me, you wouldhave sent me away empty-handed. But God saw my plight and my labours, and last night he deliveredjudgement.'	42 Se il Dio di Abramo mio padre, temuto anche da Isacco, non m'avesse assistito, forse ora tu mi rimanderesti spogliato; ma il Signore ha rimirato la mia afflizione, e l'opera delle mie mani, e ieri ti ammonì».
43 Laban replied to Jacob, 'These daughters are my daughters and these children are my children, thislivestock is my livestock: everything you see belongs to me. But what can I do today about my daughters here orabout the children they have borne?	43 Rispose Labano: «Le figlie mie ed i figli, ed i greggi tuoi, e tutto quel che tu vedi, son miei; che posso io fare ai figli e nipoti miei?
44 So come, let us make a pact, you and me . . . , and let that serve as a witness between us.'	44 Vieni dunque, e stringiamo un patto, che resti in testimonianza fra me e te».
45 Jacob then took a stone and set it up as a memorial.	45 Prese dunque Giacobbe una pietra, l'alzò in segnale,
46 Jacob said to his kinsmen, 'Col ect some stones,' and gathering some stones they made a cairn.They had a meal there, on the cairn, and	46 e disse ai fratelli: «Portate delle pietre». Quelli, ammassatele, ne fecero un mucchio, e vi mangiarono sopra.
47 Laban cal ed it Jegar-Sahadutha while Jacob called it Galeed.	47 Labano lo chiamò "Il mucchio del Testimone"; e Giacobbe "Il cumulo della testimonianza"; ciascuno nella propria lingua.
48 Laban said, 'May this cairn be a witness between us today.' That is why he named it Galeed,	48 Disse Labano: «Questo cumulo farà oggi da testimone fra me e te; perciò gli è stato messo nome Galaad, cioè "Cumulo del testimone".
49 and also Mizpah, because he said, 'Let Yahweh act as watchman between us when we are nolonger in sight of each other.	49 Vegga il Signore, e sia giudice fra noi quando ci saremo separati,
50 If you il -treat my daughters or marry other women besides my daughters, even though no one bewith us, remember: God is witness between us.'	50 se tu affliggessi le figlie mie, o se tu prendessi altre mogli oltre di loro; non v'è del nostro patto altro testimone che Dio, il quale è presente, e ci vede».
51 Then Laban said to Jacob, 'Here is this cairn I have thrown up between us, and here the pil ar.	51 Disse ancora a Giacobbe: «Questo mucchio, e la pietra ch'io ho alzata fra me e te,
52 This cairn is a witness, and the pil ar is a witness, that I am not to cross to your side of this cairn andyou are not to cross to my side of this cairn and pillar, with hostile intent.	52 farà testimonianza; questo mucchio, dico, e questa pietra, siano in testimonianza, se mai io l'oltrepassassi per venire a te, o lo oltrepassassi tu col pensiero di farci del male.
53 May the God of Abraham and the god of Nahor judge between us.' Then Jacob swore by theKinsman of his father Isaac.	53 Il Dio d'Abramo, il Dio di Nacor, il Dio de' padri loro, sia giudice fra noi». Giacobbe allora giurò per Quegli che il padre suo Isacco temeva;
54 He offered a sacrifice on the mountain and invited his kinsmen to the meal. They ate the meal, andpassed the night on the mountain.	54 ed immolate le vittime sul monte, chiamò i suoi fratelli perchè mangiassero del pane. Ed essi, dopo mangiato, vi si fermarono.
	55 Labano poi, levatosi di prima mattina, baciò i figliuoli e le figliuole, li benedisse, e tornò al suo paese.
