Genesis 31

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 Jacob learned that Laban's sons were saying, 'Jacob has taken everything that belonged to our father;it is at our father's expense that he has acquired al this wealth,'	1 Jacob apprit que les fils de Laban disaient: "Jacob a pris tout ce qui était à notre père et c'est auxdépens de notre père qu'il a constitué toute cette richesse."
2 and Jacob also saw that Laban's manner towards him was not as it had been in the past.	2 Jacob vit à la mine de Laban qu'il n'était plus avec lui comme auparavant.
3 Yahweh said to Jacob, 'Go back to the land of your ancestors, where you were born, and I shal bewith you.'	3 Yahvé dit à Jacob: "Retourne au pays de tes pères, dans ta patrie, et je serai avec toi."
4 So Jacob had Rachel and Leah cal ed to the fields where his flocks were,	4 Jacob fit appeler Rachel et Léa aux champs où étaient ses troupeaux,
5 and he said to them, 'I can see that your father's manner towards me is not as it was in the past, butthe God of my father has been with me.	5 et il leur dit: "Je vois à la mine de votre père qu'il n'est plus à mon égard comme auparavant, maisle Dieu de mon père a été avec moi.
6 You yourselves know that I have worked for your father with al my might,	6 Vous savez vous-mêmes que j'ai servi votre père de toutes mes forces.
7 and that your father has tricked me, changing my wages ten times over, and yet God has not al owedhim to harm me.	7 Votre père s'est joué de moi, il a changé dix fois mon salaire, mais Dieu ne lui a pas permis de mefaire du tort.
8 Whenever he said, "The spotted ones will be your wages," all the animals produced spotted young;whenever he said, "The striped ones wil be your wages," al the animals produced striped young.	8 Chaque fois qu'il disait: Ce qui est moucheté sera ton salaire, toutes les bêtes mettaient bas despetits mouchetés; chaque fois qu'il disait: Ce qui est rayé sera ton salaire, toutes les bêtes mettaient bas des petitsrayés,
9 Thus God has reclaimed your father's livestock and given it to me.	9 et Dieu a enlevé son bétail à votre père et me l'a donné.
10 Once, when the animals were on heat, I suddenly saw in a dream that the he-goats covering thefemales were striped or spotted or piebald.	10 Il arriva, au temps où les bêtes entrent en chaleur, que je levai les yeux et je vis en songe que lesboucs en passe de saillir les bêtes étaient rayés, tachetés ou tavelés.
11 In the dream the angel of God cal ed to me, "Jacob!" I said, "Here I am."	11 L'Ange de Dieu me dit en songe: Jacob, et je répondis: Oui.
12 He said, "Now take note: al the he-goats covering the females are striped or spotted or piebald -- forI too have noted all the things that Laban has been doing to you,	12 Il dit: Lève les yeux et vois: tous les boucs qui saillissent les bêtes sont rayés, tachetés ou tavelés,car j'ai vu tout ce que Laban te fait.
13 I am the God who appeared to you at Bethel, where you poured oil on a pillar and made a vow tome. On your feet, then, leave this country and return to the land of your birth." '	13 Je suis le Dieu qui t'est apparu à Béthel, où tu as oint une stèle et où tu m'as fait un vœu.Maintenant debout, sors de ce pays et retourne dans ta patrie."
14 In answer Rachel and Leah said to him, 'Are we stil likely to inherit anything from our father's estate?	14 Rachel et Léa lui répondirent ainsi: "Avons-nous encore une part et un héritage dans la maison denotre père?
15 Does he not think of us as outsiders now? For not only has he sold us, but he has completelyswal owed up the money he got for us.	15 Ne sommes-nous pas considérées par lui comme des étrangères, puisqu'il nous a vendues et qu'il aensuite mangé notre argent?
16 Al the wealth that God has reclaimed from our father belonged to us and our children in any case.So do whatever God has told you.'	16 Oui, toute la richesse que Dieu a retirée à notre père est à nous et à nos enfants. Fais doncmaintenant tout ce que Dieu t'a dit."
17 Forthwith, Jacob put his children and his wives on camels,	17 Jacob se leva, fit monter ses enfants et ses femmes sur des chameaux,
18 and drove off all his livestock -- with al the possessions he had acquired, the livestock belonging tohim which he had acquired in Paddan-Aram -- to go to his father Isaac in Canaan.	18 et poussa devant lui tout son bétail, -- avec tous les biens qu'il avait acquis, le bétail qui luiappartenait et qu'il avait acquis en Paddân-Aram, -- pour aller chez son père Isaac, au pays de Canaan.
19 Laban was away, shearing his sheep; Rachel in the meanwhile had appropriated the household idolsbelonging to her father,	19 Laban était allé tondre son troupeau et Rachel déroba les idoles domestiques qui étaient à sonpère.
20 and Jacob had outwitted Laban the Aramaean so that he would not be forewarned of his flight.	20 Jacob abusa l'esprit de Laban l'Araméen en ne lui laissant pas soupçonner qu'il fuyait.
21 Thus he got away with all he had. He was soon across the River and heading for Mount Gilead.	21 Il s'enfuit avec tout ce qu'il avait, il partit, passa le Fleuve et se dirigea vers le mont Galaad.
22 Three days later Laban was told that Jacob had fled.	22 Le troisième jour, on apprit à Laban que Jacob s'était enfui.
23 Taking his brothers with him, he pursued him for seven days and overtook him at Mount Gilead.	23 Il prit ses frères avec lui, le poursuivit sept jours de chemin et l'atteignit au mont Galaad.
24 But God appeared to Laban the Aramaean in a dream that night and said to him, 'On no account sayanything whatever to Jacob.'	24 Dieu visita Laban l'Araméen dans une vision nocturne et lui dit: "Garde-toi de dire à Jacob quoique ce soit."
25 Laban caught up with Jacob, who had pitched his tent in the hil s; and Laban pitched camp on MountGilead.	25 Laban rejoignit Jacob qui avait planté sa tente dans la montagne, et Laban planta sa tente au montGalaad.
26 Laban said to Jacob, 'What do you mean by outwitting me and then carrying off my daughters likeprisoners of war?	26 Laban dit à Jacob: "Qu'as-tu fait d'abuser mon esprit et d'emmener mes filles comme des captivesde guerre?
27 Why did you flee in secret, stealing away without letting me know, so that I could send you on yourway rejoicing, with songs and the music of tambourines and harps?	27 Pourquoi as-tu fui en secret et m'as-tu abusé au lieu de m'avertir, pour que je te reconduise dansl'allégresse et les chants, avec tambourins et lyres?
28 You did not even let me kiss my sons and daughters. You have behaved like a fool.	28 Tu ne m'as pas laissé embrasser mes fils et mes filles. Vraiment, tu as agi en insensé!
29 It is in my power to harm you, but the God of your father said to me last night, "On no account sayanything whatever to Jacob."	29 Il serait en mon pouvoir de te faire du mal, mais le Dieu de ton père, la nuit passée, m'a dit ceci:Garde-toi de dire à Jacob quoi que ce soit.
30 Now it may be you real y went because you had such a longing for your father's house, but why didyou steal my gods?'	30 Maintenant, tu es donc parti, parce que tu languissais tellement après la maison de ton père! Maispourquoi as-tu volé mes dieux?"
31 Jacob answered Laban, 'I was afraid, thinking you were going to snatch your daughters from me.	31 Jacob répondit ainsi à Laban: "J'ai eu peur, je me suis dit que tu allais m'enlever tes filles.
32 But whoever is found in possession of your gods shall not remain alive. In the presence of ourbrothers, examine for yourself what I have, and take what is yours.' Now Jacob did not know that Rachel hadappropriated them.	32 Mais celui chez qui tu trouveras tes dieux ne restera pas vivant: devant nos frères, reconnais cequi est à toi chez moi, et prends-le." Jacob ignorait en effet que Rachel les avait dérobés.
33 Laban went into Jacob's tent, and then into Leah's tent and the tent of the two slave-girls, but hefound nothing. He came out of Leah's tent and went into Rachel's.	33 Laban alla chercher dans la tente de Jacob, puis dans la tente de Léa, puis dans la tente des deuxservantes, et il ne trouva rien. Il sortit de la tente de Léa et entra dans celle de Rachel.
34 Now Rachel had taken the household idols and put them inside a camel cushion, and was sitting onthem. Laban went through everything in the tent but found nothing.	34 Or Rachel avait pris les idoles domestiques, les avait mises dans le palanquin du chameau ets'était assise dessus; Laban fouilla toute la tente et ne trouva rien.
35 Then Rachel said to her father, 'Do not look angry, my lord, because I cannot rise in your presence,for I am as women are from time to time.' Laban searched but did not find the idols.	35 Rachel dit à son père: "Que Monseigneur ne voie pas avec colère que je ne puisse me lever en taprésence, car j'ai ce qui est coutumier aux femmes." Laban chercha et ne trouva pas les idoles.
36 Then Jacob lost his temper and took Laban to task. And Jacob said to Laban, 'What is my offence,what is my crime, for you to have hounded me like this?	36 Jacob se mit en colère et prit à partie Laban. Et Jacob adressa ainsi la parole à Laban: "Quel estmon crime, quelle est ma faute, que tu te sois acharné après moi?
37 You have gone through al my belongings; have you found anything belonging to your household?Produce it here in the presence of my brothers and yours, and let them decide between the two of us.	37 Tu as fouillé toutes mes affaires: as-tu rien trouvé de toutes les affaires de ta maison? Produis-leici, devant mes frères et tes frères, et qu'ils jugent entre nous deux!
38 In al the twenty years I was under you, your ewes and your she-goats never miscarried, and I neverate rams from your flock.	38 Voici vingt ans que je suis chez toi, tes brebis et tes chèvres n'ont pas avorté et je n'ai pas mangéles béliers de ton troupeau.
39 Those mauled I never brought back to you, but bore the loss myself. You demanded compensationfrom me, whether the animal was stolen in daylight or at night.	39 Les animaux déchirés par les fauves, je ne les rapportais pas, c'était moi qui compensais leurperte; tu me les réclamais, que j'aie été volé de jour ou que j'aie été volé de nuit.
40 In the daytime the heat devoured me, and frost at night; I never had a good night's sleep.	40 J'ai été dévoré par la chaleur pendant le jour, par le froid pendant la nuit, et le sommeil a fui mesyeux.
41 It was like this for the twenty years I spent in your household. Fourteen years I slaved for you for your two daughters, and six years for your flock, since you changed my wages ten times over.	41 Voici vingt ans que je suis dans ta maison: je t'ai servi quatorze ans pour tes deux filles et six anspour ton troupeau, et tu as changé dix fois mon salaire.
42 If the God of my father, the God of Abraham, the Kinsman of Isaac, had not been with me, you wouldhave sent me away empty-handed. But God saw my plight and my labours, and last night he deliveredjudgement.'	42 Si le Dieu de mon père, le Dieu d'Abraham, le Parent d'Isaac, n'avait pas été avec moi, tu m'auraisrenvoyé les mains vides. Mais Dieu a vu mes fatigues et le labeur de mes bras et, la nuit passée, il a rendu sonjugement."
43 Laban replied to Jacob, 'These daughters are my daughters and these children are my children, thislivestock is my livestock: everything you see belongs to me. But what can I do today about my daughters here orabout the children they have borne?	43 Laban répondit ainsi à Jacob: "Ces filles sont mes filles, ces enfants sont mes enfants, ce bétail estmon bétail, tout ce que tu vois est à moi. Mais que pourrais-je faire aujourd'hui à mes filles que voici et auxenfants qu'elles ont mis au monde?
44 So come, let us make a pact, you and me . . . , and let that serve as a witness between us.'	44 Allons, concluons un traité, moi et toi..., et que cela serve de témoin entre moi et toi."
45 Jacob then took a stone and set it up as a memorial.	45 Alors Jacob prit une pierre et la dressa comme une stèle.
46 Jacob said to his kinsmen, 'Col ect some stones,' and gathering some stones they made a cairn.They had a meal there, on the cairn, and	46 Et Jacob dit à ses frères: "Ramassez des pierres." Ils ramassèrent des pierres et en firent unmonceau et ils mangèrent là, sur le monceau.
47 Laban cal ed it Jegar-Sahadutha while Jacob called it Galeed.	47 Laban le nomma Yegar Sahadûta et Jacob le nomma Galéed.
48 Laban said, 'May this cairn be a witness between us today.' That is why he named it Galeed,	48 Laban dit: "Que ce monceau soit aujourd'hui un témoin entre moi et toi." C'est pourquoi il lenomma Galéed,
49 and also Mizpah, because he said, 'Let Yahweh act as watchman between us when we are nolonger in sight of each other.	49 et Miçpa, parce qu'il dit: "Que Yahvé soit un guetteur entre moi et toi, quand nous ne serons plusen vue l'un de l'autre.
50 If you il -treat my daughters or marry other women besides my daughters, even though no one bewith us, remember: God is witness between us.'	50 Si tu maltraites mes filles ou si tu prends d'autres femmes en sus de mes filles, et que personne nesoit avec nous, vois:Dieu est témoin entre moi et toi."
51 Then Laban said to Jacob, 'Here is this cairn I have thrown up between us, and here the pil ar.	51 Et Laban dit à Jacob: "Voici ce monceau que j'ai entassé entre moi et toi, et voici la stèle.
52 This cairn is a witness, and the pil ar is a witness, that I am not to cross to your side of this cairn andyou are not to cross to my side of this cairn and pillar, with hostile intent.	52 Ce monceau est témoin, la stèle est témoin, que moi je ne dois pas dépasser ce monceau vers toi etque toi tu ne dois pas dépasser ce monceau et cette stèle, vers moi, avec de mauvaises intentions.
53 May the God of Abraham and the god of Nahor judge between us.' Then Jacob swore by theKinsman of his father Isaac.	53 Que le Dieu d'Abraham et le Dieu de Nahor jugent entre nous."Et Jacob prêta serment par leParent d'Isaac, son père.
54 He offered a sacrifice on the mountain and invited his kinsmen to the meal. They ate the meal, andpassed the night on the mountain.	54 Jacob fit un sacrifice sur la montagne et invita ses frères au repas. Ils prirent le repas et passèrentla nuit sur la montagne.
