NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
So Isaac summoned Jacob and blessed him; and he gave him this order: 'You are not to marry any ofthe Canaanite women.1 Vocavit itaque Isaac Iacob et benedixit eum praecepit que ei dicens: “ Noli accipere coniugem de filiabus Chanaan;
Go off to Paddan-Aram, the home of Bethuel your mother's father, and there choose a wife foryourself from the daughters of Laban your mother's brother.2 surge, vade in Paddanaram ad domum Bathuel patris matris tuae et accipe tibi inde uxorem de filiabus Laban avunculi tui.
May El Shaddai bless you; may he make you fruitful and make you multiply so that you become agroup of nations.3 Deus autem omnipotens benedicat tibi et crescere te faciat atque multiplicet, ut sis in multitudinem populorum;
May he grant you the blessing of Abraham, you and your descendants after you, so that one day youmay own the country where you are now living as a stranger -- which God gave to Abraham.'4 et det tibi benedictiones Abraham tibi et semini tuo tecum, ut possideas terram peregrinationis tuae, quam pollicitus est Deus avo tuo ”.
Then Isaac sent Jacob away, and Jacob went to Paddan-Aram, to Laban son of Bethuel theAramaean and brother of Rebekah the mother of Jacob and Esau.5 Cumque dimisisset eum Isaac, profectus est in Paddanaram ad Laban filium Bathuel Aramaei fratrem Rebeccae matris Iacob et Esau.
When Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him to Paddan-Aram to choose a wife there,and that in blessing him he had given him this order: 'You are not to choose a wife from the Canaanite women,'6 Videns autem Esau quod benedixisset pater suus Iacob et misisset eum in Paddanaram, ut inde uxorem duceret, et quod post benedictionem praecepisset ei dicens: “ Non accipies uxorem de filiabus Chanaan ”,
and that, in obedience to his father and mother, Jacob had gone to Paddan-Aram,7 quodque oboediens Iacob parentibus suis isset in Paddanaram;
Esau then realised how much his father Isaac disapproved of the Canaanite women.8 probans quoque quod non libenter aspiceret filias Chanaan pater suus,
So Esau went to Ishmael and chose for a wife, in addition to the wives he had, Mahalath daughter ofAbraham's son Ishmael and sister of Nebaioth.9 ivit ad Ismaelem et duxit uxorem, absque iis, quas habebat, Mahalath filiam Ismael filii Abraham sororem Nabaioth.
Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Haran.10 Igitur egressus Iacob de Bersabee pergebat Charran.
When he had reached a certain place, he stopped there for the night, since the sun had set. Takingone of the stones of that place, he made it his pil ow and lay down where he was.11 Cumque venisset ad quendam locum et vellet in eo requiescere post solis occubitum, tulit de lapidibus, qui iacebant, et supponens capiti suo dormivit in eodem loco.
He had a dream: there was a ladder, planted on the ground with its top reaching to heaven; andGod's angels were going up and down on it.12 Viditque in somnio scalam stantem super terram et cacumen illius tangens caelum, angelos quoque Dei ascendentes et descendentes per eam
And there was Yahweh, standing beside him and saying, 'I, Yahweh, am the God of Abraham yourfather, and the God of Isaac. The ground on which you are lying I shall give to you and your descendants.13 et Dominum innixum scalae dicentem sibi: “ Ego sum Dominus, Deus Abraham patris tui et Deus Isaac. Terram, in qua dormis, tibi dabo et semini tuo.
Your descendants wil be as plentiful as the dust on the ground; you wil spread out to west and east,to north and south, and al clans on earth wil bless themselves by you and your descendants.14 Eritque semen tuum quasi pulvis terrae; dilataberis ad occidentem et orientem et septentrionem et meridiem; et benedicentur in te et in semine tuo cunctae tribus terrae.
Be sure, I am with you; I shal keep you safe wherever you go, and bring you back to this country, forI shal never desert you until I have done what I have promised you.'15 Et ecce, ego tecum sum et custodiam te, quocumque perrexeris, et reducam te in terram hanc; nec dimittam te, nisi complevero quae dixi tibi ”.
Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, 'Truly, Yahweh is in this place and I did not know!'16 Cumque evigilasset Iacob de somno, ait: “ Vere Dominus est in loco isto, et ego nesciebam ”.
He was afraid and said, 'How awe-inspiring this place is! This is nothing less than the abode of God,and this is the gate of heaven!'17 Pavensque: “ Quam terribilis est, inquit, locus iste! Non est hic aliud nisi domus Dei et porta caeli ”.
Early next morning, Jacob took the stone he had used for his pillow, and set it up as a pil ar, pouringoil over the top of it.18 Surgens ergo Iacob mane tulit lapidem, quem supposuerat capiti suo, et erexit in titulum fundens oleum desuper.
He named the place Bethel, but before that the town had been cal ed Luz.19 Appellavitque nomen loci illius Bethel; prius autem urbs vocabatur Luza.
Jacob then made this vow, 'If God remains with me and keeps me safe on this journey I am making,if he gives me food to eat and clothes to wear,20 Vovit Iacob etiam votum dicens: “ Si fuerit Deus mecum et custodierit me in via hac, per quam ambulo, et dederit mihi panem ad vescendum et vestimentum ad induendum,
and if I come home safe to my father's home, then Yahweh shal be my God.21 reversusque fuero prospere ad domum patris mei, erit mihi Dominus in Deum,
This stone I have set up as a pil ar is to be a house of God, and I shal faithful y pay you a tenth partof everything you give me.'22 et lapis iste, quem erexi in titulum, erit domus Dei; cunctorumque, quae dederis mihi, decimas offeram tibi ”.
