1 So Isaac summoned Jacob and blessed him; and he gave him this order: 'You are not to marry any ofthe Canaanite women.	1 Isaac appela donc Jacob, il le bénit et lui donna cet ordre: “Tu n’épouseras pas une fille de Canaan.
2 Go off to Paddan-Aram, the home of Bethuel your mother's father, and there choose a wife foryourself from the daughters of Laban your mother's brother.	2 Il te faut aller à Paddân-Aram, à la maison de Bétuel, le père de ta mère, et prends-toi une femme parmi les filles de ton oncle Laban.
3 May El Shaddai bless you; may he make you fruitful and make you multiply so that you become agroup of nations.	3 Que le Dieu de La Steppe te bénisse, pour que tu grandisses et te multiplies jusqu’à devenir une assemblée de peuples.
4 May he grant you the blessing of Abraham, you and your descendants after you, so that one day youmay own the country where you are now living as a stranger -- which God gave to Abraham.'	4 Qu’il te donne à toi et à ta descendance après toi la bénédiction d’Abraham, pour que tu possèdes ce pays où tu séjournes, celui que Dieu a donné à Abraham.”
5 Then Isaac sent Jacob away, and Jacob went to Paddan-Aram, to Laban son of Bethuel theAramaean and brother of Rebekah the mother of Jacob and Esau.	5 Isaac fit partir Jacob; celui-ci s’en alla vers Paddân-Aram chez Laban, le fils de Bétuel l’Araméen, le frère de Rébecca, mère de Jacob et d’Ésaü.
6 When Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him to Paddan-Aram to choose a wife there,and that in blessing him he had given him this order: 'You are not to choose a wife from the Canaanite women,'	6 Isaac avait donc béni Jacob. Il l’avait envoyé à Paddân-Aram pour y prendre une femme car, en le bénissant, il lui avait donné cet ordre: “Tu ne prendras pas pour femme une fille de Canaan!”
7 and that, in obedience to his father and mother, Jacob had gone to Paddan-Aram,	7 Et Jacob, écoutant son père et sa mère, s’en était allé vers Paddân-Aram. Voyant cela,
8 Esau then realised how much his father Isaac disapproved of the Canaanite women.	8 Ésaü comprit que les filles de Canaan déplaisaient à Isaac, son père.
9 So Esau went to Ishmael and chose for a wife, in addition to the wives he had, Mahalath daughter ofAbraham's son Ishmael and sister of Nebaioth.	9 Ésaü se rendit donc chez Ismaël et, en plus de ses femmes, il épousa Makhalat, fille d’Ismaël fils d’Abraham, la sœur de Nébayot.
10 Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Haran.	10 Jacob quitta Bersabée et partit pour Harrân.
11 When he had reached a certain place, he stopped there for the night, since the sun had set. Takingone of the stones of that place, he made it his pil ow and lay down where he was.	11 Arrivé en un certain lieu, il se proposa d’y passer la nuit car le soleil était déjà couché. Il prit une des pierres de l’endroit et en fit son oreiller, puis il se coucha en ce même endroit.
12 He had a dream: there was a ladder, planted on the ground with its top reaching to heaven; andGod's angels were going up and down on it.	12 Et puis il eut un songe. Une échelle était là, dressée sur la terre, et son sommet touchait les cieux; des anges de Dieu montaient et descendaient sur cette échelle.
13 And there was Yahweh, standing beside him and saying, 'I, Yahweh, am the God of Abraham yourfather, and the God of Isaac. The ground on which you are lying I shall give to you and your descendants.	13 Yahvé se tenait à côté de lui, il lui dit: “Je suis Yahvé, le Dieu de ton père Abraham et le Dieu d’Isaac. La terre sur laquelle tu t’es couché, je te la donnerai ainsi qu’à ta descendance.
14 Your descendants wil be as plentiful as the dust on the ground; you wil spread out to west and east,to north and south, and al clans on earth wil bless themselves by you and your descendants.	14 Ta descendance sera comme la poussière de la terre, tu déborderas vers l’ouest et vers l’est, vers le nord et vers le sud. Par toi et par ta descendance se béniront toutes les familles de la terre.
15 Be sure, I am with you; I shal keep you safe wherever you go, and bring you back to this country, forI shal never desert you until I have done what I have promised you.'	15 Je suis avec toi, je te protégerai partout où tu iras et je te ramènerai sur cette terre, car je ne t’abandonnerai pas jusqu’à ce que j’aie fait ce que je te dis.”
16 Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, 'Truly, Yahweh is in this place and I did not know!'	16 Quand Jacob se réveilla de son sommeil, il dit: “Yahvé est donc en ce lieu, et je ne le savais pas!”
17 He was afraid and said, 'How awe-inspiring this place is! This is nothing less than the abode of God,and this is the gate of heaven!'	17 Il eut peur: “Que ce lieu est terrible, dit-il, ce n’est rien de moins qu’une maison de Dieu et la porte du ciel.”
18 Early next morning, Jacob took the stone he had used for his pillow, and set it up as a pil ar, pouringoil over the top of it.	18 Jacob se leva de bon matin: il prit la pierre qui lui avait servi d’oreiller, il la dressa et versa de l’huile sur son sommet.
19 He named the place Bethel, but before that the town had been cal ed Luz.	19 Puis il donna à ce lieu le nom de Béthel (c’est-à-dire: Maison de Dieu), car auparavant le nom de la ville était Louz.
20 Jacob then made this vow, 'If God remains with me and keeps me safe on this journey I am making,if he gives me food to eat and clothes to wear,	20 Jacob fit alors un vœu: “Si Dieu est avec moi, s’il me protège dans le voyage que j’ai entrepris, s’il me donne mon pain et un habit pour me vêtir,
21 and if I come home safe to my father's home, then Yahweh shal be my God.	21 si je retourne en paix à la maison de mon père: en un mot, si Yahvé se comporte avec moi comme un Dieu,
22 This stone I have set up as a pil ar is to be a house of God, and I shal faithful y pay you a tenth partof everything you give me.'	22 cette pierre que j’ai dressée en souvenir sera une maison de Dieu, et je lui verserai la dixième partie de tout ce qu’il me donnera.”
