1 So the inhabitants of Kiriath-jearim came for the ark of the LORD and brought it into the house of Abinadab on the hill, appointing his son Eleazar as guardian of the ark of the LORD.	1 Venuti adunque quelli di Cariatiarim, menarono via l'arca e la portarono nella casa di Abinadab, in Gabaa, e santificarono il figlio di lui Eleazaro, affinchè custodisse l'arca del Signore.
2 From the day the ark came to rest in Kiriath-jearim a long time-twenty years-elapsed, and the whole Israelite population turned to the LORD.	2 Dal dì in cui l'arca del Signore era stata collocata in Cariatiarim erano scorsi molti giorni, vent'anni, e tutta la casa di Israele riposava dietro al Signore,
3 Samuel said to them: "If you wish with your whole heart to return to the LORD, put away your foreign gods and your Ashtaroth, devote yourselves to the LORD, and worship him alone. Then he will deliver you from the power of the Philistines."	3 quando Samuele parlò a tutta la casa d'Israele e disse: « Se è di tutto cuore che tornate al Signore, togliete di mezzo a voi gli dèi stranieri, i Baalim e le Astarot: preparate i vostri cuori al Signore e servite a lui solo, ed egli vi libererà dalle mani dei Filistei ».
4 So the Israelites put away their Baals and Ashtaroth, and worshiped the LORD alone.	4 Allora i figli d'Israele tolsero via i Baalim e le Astarot e servirono soltanto al Signore.
5 Samuel then gave orders, "Gather all Israel to Mizpah, that I may pray to the LORD for you."	5 Poi Samuele disse: « Radunate tutto Israele in Masfat, affinchè io preghi il Signore per voi ».
6 When they were gathered at Mizpah, they drew water and poured it out on the ground before the LORD, and they fasted that day, confessing, "We have sinned against the LORD." It was at Mizpah that Samuel began to judge the Israelites.	6 E si radunarono in Masfat, e, attinta dell'acqua, la sparsero dinanzi al Signore, e quel giorno stettero digiuni a dire: « Abbiamo peccato contro il Signore ». E Samuele giudicò Israele in Masfat.
7 When the Philistines heard that the Israelites had gathered at Mizpah, their lords went up against Israel. Hearing this, the Israelites became afraid of the Philistines	7 Avendo saputo i Filistei che i figli d'Israele s'erano adunati in Masfat, i satrapi dei Filistei salirono contro Israele; e i figli d'Israele udito ciò, temendo dei Filistei,
8 and said to Samuel, "Implore the LORD our God unceasingly for us, to save us from the clutches of the Philistines."	8 dissero a Samuele: «Non cessar di gridare per noi al Signore Dio nostro, affinchè ci salvi dalle mani dei Filistei ».
9 Samuel therefore took an unweaned lamb and offered it entire as a holocaust to the LORD. He implored the LORD for Israel, and the LORD heard him.	9 E Samuele, preso un agnello di latte, l'offerse intero in olocausto al Signore, e Samuele gridò al Signore per Israele; e il Signore l'esaudì.
10 While Samuel was offering the holocaust, the Philistines advanced to join battle with Israel. That day, however, the LORD thundered loudly against the Philistines, and threw them into such confusion that they were defeated by Israel.	10 Qr mentre Samuele offriva l'olocausto al Signore, i Filistei cominciarono la battaglia contro Israele, ma il Signore con grande fracasso in quel giorno tonò sopra i Filistei, e li atterrì in modo che essi furono fatti a pezzi da Israele.
11 Thereupon the Israelites sallied forth from Mizpah and pursued the Philistines, harrying them down beyond Beth-car.	11 I figli d'Israele, usciti di Masfat, inseguirono i Filistei e li percossero fino al di sotto di Betcar.
12 Samuel then took a stone and placed it between Mizpah and Jeshanah; he named it Ebenezer, explaining, "To this point the LORD helped us."	12 Samuele prese poi una pietra e la pose tra Masfat e Sen, e diede a quel luogo il nome di Pietra del soccorso, dicendo: « Sin qui ci ha soccorsi il Signore ».
13 Thus were the Philistines subdued, never again to enter the territory of Israel, for the LORD was severe with them as long as Samuel lived.	13 Così umiliati i Filistei non ardiron più di entrare nei confini d'Israele. E la mano del Signore fu sopra i Filistei per tutto il tempo di Samuele,
14 The cities from Ekron to Gath which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to them. Israel also freed the territory of these cities from the dominion of the Philistines. Moreover there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.	14 Furono inoltre restituite ad Israele le città che i Filistei gli avevan tolte, da Accaron fino a Get, coi loro territori. Così Samuele liberò Israele dalla mano dei Filistei, mentre vi era pace tra Israele e l'Amorreo.
15 Samuel judged Israel as long as he lived.	15 Samuele giudicò Israele per tutti i giorni della sua vita;
16 He made a yearly journey, passing through Bethel, Gilgal and Mizpah and judging Israel at each of these sanctuaries.	16 e andando ogni anno in giro a Betel, a Galgala e a Masfat, giudicava Israele nei detti luoghi,
17 Then he used to return to Ramah, for that was his home. There, too, he judged Israel and built an altar to the LORD.	17 poi ritornava a Ramata, ove era la sua casa, dove pure giudicava Israele,dove aveva anche eretto un altare al Signore.
