1 So the inhabitants of Kiriath-jearim came for the ark of the LORD and brought it into the house of Abinadab on the hill, appointing his son Eleazar as guardian of the ark of the LORD.	1 Vinieron las gentes de Quiryat Yearim y subieron el arca de Yahveh. La llevaron a la casa de Abinadab, en la loma, y consagraron a su hijo Eleazar para que custodiase el arca de Yahveh.
2 From the day the ark came to rest in Kiriath-jearim a long time-twenty years-elapsed, and the whole Israelite population turned to the LORD.	2 Pasaron muchos días - veinte años - desde el día en que el arca se instaló en Quiryat Yearim, y toda la casa de Israel suspiró por Yahveh.
3 Samuel said to them: "If you wish with your whole heart to return to the LORD, put away your foreign gods and your Ashtaroth, devote yourselves to the LORD, and worship him alone. Then he will deliver you from the power of the Philistines."	3 Entonces Samuel habló así a toda la casa de Israel: «Si os volvéis a Yahveh con todo vuestro corazón, quitad de en medio de vosotros los dioses extranjeros y las Astartés, fijad vuestro corazón en Yahveh y servidle a él solo y entonces él os librará de la mano de los filisteos».
4 So the Israelites put away their Baals and Ashtaroth, and worshiped the LORD alone.	4 Los israelitas quitaron los Baales y las Astartés y sirvieron sólo a Yahveh.
5 Samuel then gave orders, "Gather all Israel to Mizpah, that I may pray to the LORD for you."	5 Samuel dijo: «Congregad a todo Israel en Mispá y yo suplicaré a Yahveh por vosotros».
6 When they were gathered at Mizpah, they drew water and poured it out on the ground before the LORD, and they fasted that day, confessing, "We have sinned against the LORD." It was at Mizpah that Samuel began to judge the Israelites.	6 Se congregaron, pues, en Mispá, sacaron agua, que derramaron ante Yahveh, ayunaron aquel día y dijeron: «Hemos pecado contra Yahveh». Samuel juzgó a los israelitas en Mispá.
7 When the Philistines heard that the Israelites had gathered at Mizpah, their lords went up against Israel. Hearing this, the Israelites became afraid of the Philistines	7 Cuando los filisteos supieron que los israelitas se habían reunido en Mispá, subieron los tiranos de los filisteos contra Israel. Habiéndolo oído los israelitas, temieron a los filisteos
8 and said to Samuel, "Implore the LORD our God unceasingly for us, to save us from the clutches of the Philistines."	8 y dijeron los israelitas a Samuel: «No dejes de invocar a Yahveh nuestro Dios, para que él nos salve de la mano de los filisteos».
9 Samuel therefore took an unweaned lamb and offered it entire as a holocaust to the LORD. He implored the LORD for Israel, and the LORD heard him.	9 Tomó Samuel un cordero lechal y lo ofreció entero en holocausto a Yahveh, invocó a Yahveh en favor de Israel y Yahveh le escuchó.
10 While Samuel was offering the holocaust, the Philistines advanced to join battle with Israel. That day, however, the LORD thundered loudly against the Philistines, and threw them into such confusion that they were defeated by Israel.	10 Estaba Samuel ofreciendo el holocausto, cuando los filisteos presentaron batalla a Israel, pero tronó Yahveh aquel día con gran estruendo sobre los filisteos, los llenó de terror y fueron batidos ante Israel.
11 Thereupon the Israelites sallied forth from Mizpah and pursued the Philistines, harrying them down beyond Beth-car.	11 Los hombres de Israel salieron de Mispá y persiguieron a los filisteos desbaratándolos hasta más abajo de Bet Kar.
12 Samuel then took a stone and placed it between Mizpah and Jeshanah; he named it Ebenezer, explaining, "To this point the LORD helped us."	12 Tomó entonces Samuel una piedra y la erigió entre Mispá y Yesaná y le dio el nombre de Eben Haézer, diciendo: «Hasta aquí nos ha socorrido Yahveh».
13 Thus were the Philistines subdued, never again to enter the territory of Israel, for the LORD was severe with them as long as Samuel lived.	13 Los filisteos fueron humillados. No volvieron más sobre el territorio de Israel y la mano de Yahveh pesó sobre los filisteos durante toda la vida de Samuel.
14 The cities from Ekron to Gath which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to them. Israel also freed the territory of these cities from the dominion of the Philistines. Moreover there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.	14 Las ciudades que los filisteos habían tomado a los israelitas fueron devueltas a Israel, desde Ecrón hasta Gat, liberando Israel su territorio del dominio de los filisteos. Y hubo paz entre Israel y los amorreos.
15 Samuel judged Israel as long as he lived.	15 Samuel juzgó a Israel todos los días de su vida.
16 He made a yearly journey, passing through Bethel, Gilgal and Mizpah and judging Israel at each of these sanctuaries.	16 Hacía cada año un recorrido por Betel, Guilgal, Mispá, juzgando a Israel en todos estos lugares.
17 Then he used to return to Ramah, for that was his home. There, too, he judged Israel and built an altar to the LORD.	17 Después se volvía a Ramá porque allí tenía su casa, y juzgaba a Israel. Y edificó allí un altar a Yahveh.
