1 So the inhabitants of Kiriath-jearim came for the ark of the LORD and brought it into the house of Abinadab on the hill, appointing his son Eleazar as guardian of the ark of the LORD.	1 - Vennero pertanto quei di Cariatiarim e riportarono l'arca del Signore e la introdussero nella casa di Abinadab in Gabaa e il figlio di lui, Eleazaro venne consacrato affinchè custodisse l'arca del Signore.
2 From the day the ark came to rest in Kiriath-jearim a long time-twenty years-elapsed, and the whole Israelite population turned to the LORD.	2 Dal giorno in cui l'arca del Signore era stata collocata a Cariatiarim era passato molto tempo (si era già nell'anno ventesimo) e la casa tutta di Israele, riposò seguendo il Signore.
3 Samuel said to them: "If you wish with your whole heart to return to the LORD, put away your foreign gods and your Ashtaroth, devote yourselves to the LORD, and worship him alone. Then he will deliver you from the power of the Philistines."	3 Disse allora Samuele a tutto Israele: «Se con tutto il vostro cuore vi convertite al Signore, togliete di mezzo a voi tutti gli dèi stranieri, i Baalim e le Astarot e disponete i vostri cuori a servire soltanto al Signore. Allora egli vi libererà dalle mani dei Filistei».
4 So the Israelites put away their Baals and Ashtaroth, and worshiped the LORD alone.	4 Avendo pertanto i figli d'Israele tolto di mezzo i Baalim e le Astarot ed essendosi messi a servire soltanto al Signore,
5 Samuel then gave orders, "Gather all Israel to Mizpah, that I may pray to the LORD for you."	5 disse Samuele: «Radunate tutto Israele in Masfat perchè preghi per voi il Signore».
6 When they were gathered at Mizpah, they drew water and poured it out on the ground before the LORD, and they fasted that day, confessing, "We have sinned against the LORD." It was at Mizpah that Samuel began to judge the Israelites.	6 Convennero quindi in Masfat, e, attinta dell'acqua, la effusero al cospetto del Signore, e dopo aver quel dì digiunato, dissero: «Peccammo contro il Signore». Samuele giudicò adunque Israele in Masfat.
7 When the Philistines heard that the Israelites had gathered at Mizpah, their lords went up against Israel. Hearing this, the Israelites became afraid of the Philistines	7 Or, come i Filistei seppero che i figli di Israele si eran radunati in Masfat, i loro satrapi ascesero contro Israele. Il che avendo udito, i figli d'Israele ebbero paura dei Filistei
8 and said to Samuel, "Implore the LORD our God unceasingly for us, to save us from the clutches of the Philistines."	8 e dissero a Samuele: «Non cessare di alzar la tua voce al Signore Iddio nostro, perchè ci salvi dalla mano dei Filistei».
9 Samuel therefore took an unweaned lamb and offered it entire as a holocaust to the LORD. He implored the LORD for Israel, and the LORD heard him.	9 Preso allora un agnello di latte, Samuele l'offrì intero in olocausto al Signore: poi gridò al Signore per Israele e il Signore lo esaudì.
10 While Samuel was offering the holocaust, the Philistines advanced to join battle with Israel. That day, however, the LORD thundered loudly against the Philistines, and threw them into such confusion that they were defeated by Israel.	10 Mentre Samuele offriva il sacrificio, i Filistei attaccarono battaglia contro Israele; ma il Signore tuonò quel dì con grande fragore sui Filistei e li atterrì siffattamente che vennero da Israele sbaragliati.
11 Thereupon the Israelites sallied forth from Mizpah and pursued the Philistines, harrying them down beyond Beth-car.	11 Usciti poi gli uomini d'Israele da Masfat, si misero a inseguire i Filistei e li batterono fino ad una località che era sotto Betcar.
12 Samuel then took a stone and placed it between Mizpah and Jeshanah; he named it Ebenezer, explaining, "To this point the LORD helped us."	12 Samuele, presa allora una pietra e postala tra Masfat e Sen, chiamò la località: " Pietra del Soccorso " dicendo: «Fin qua ci aiutò il Signore».
13 Thus were the Philistines subdued, never again to enter the territory of Israel, for the LORD was severe with them as long as Samuel lived.	13 I Filistei furono così umiliati che non tentaron più di porre piede entro i confini d'Israele e per tutta la vita di Samuele la mano del Signore fu sopra i Filistei.
14 The cities from Ekron to Gath which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to them. Israel also freed the territory of these cities from the dominion of the Philistines. Moreover there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.	14 E furon restituite ad Israele le città che i Filistei avevan prese da Accaron fino a Get coi loro territorii; ed egli liberò Israele dalle mani dei Filistei e vi fu pace tra Israeliti e Amorrei.

16 He made a yearly journey, passing through Bethel, Gilgal and Mizpah and judging Israel at each of these sanctuaries.	16 e ogni anno andava in giro a Betel, a Galgala, a Masfat e in queste località giudicava Israele.
17 Then he used to return to Ramah, for that was his home. There, too, he judged Israel and built an altar to the LORD.	17 Tornava quindi a Ramata, dove abitava. Qui pure giudicava Israele e qui eresse un altare al Signore.
