1 So the inhabitants of Kiriath-jearim came for the ark of the LORD and brought it into the house of Abinadab on the hill, appointing his son Eleazar as guardian of the ark of the LORD.	1 Allora gli uomini di Kiriat-Iearim andarono a prendere l'arca del Signore, la portarono nella casa di Abinadàb sulla collina e consacrarono suo figlio Eleazaro perché custodisse l'arca del Signore.
2 From the day the ark came to rest in Kiriath-jearim a long time-twenty years-elapsed, and the whole Israelite population turned to the LORD.	2 Da quando l'arca si stabilì a Kiriat-Iearim passò molto, una ventina d'anni, quando tutta la casa d'Israele si volse con lamenti verso il Signore.
3 Samuel said to them: "If you wish with your whole heart to return to the LORD, put away your foreign gods and your Ashtaroth, devote yourselves to the LORD, and worship him alone. Then he will deliver you from the power of the Philistines."	3 Allora Samuele così parlò a tutta la casa d'Israele: "Se ritornate con tutto il vostro cuore al Signore, togliete via da mezzo a voi gli dèi stranieri e le Astarti, fissate il vostro cuore nel Signore e rendete culto soltanto a lui! Allora egli vi strapperà dalle mani dei Filistei".
4 So the Israelites put away their Baals and Ashtaroth, and worshiped the LORD alone.	4 I figli d'Israele tolsero via i Baal e le Astarti, e prestarono culto soltanto al Signore.
5 Samuel then gave orders, "Gather all Israel to Mizpah, that I may pray to the LORD for you."	5 Disse poi Samuele: "Radunate tutto Israele a Mizpa e io intercederò per voi presso il Signore".
6 When they were gathered at Mizpah, they drew water and poured it out on the ground before the LORD, and they fasted that day, confessing, "We have sinned against the LORD." It was at Mizpah that Samuel began to judge the Israelites.	6 Radunatisi a Mizpa, attinsero acqua e la versarono al cospetto del Signore; in quel giorno fecero digiuno e confessarono: "Abbiamo peccato contro il Signore!". Samuele giudicò i figli di Israele in Mizpa.
7 When the Philistines heard that the Israelites had gathered at Mizpah, their lords went up against Israel. Hearing this, the Israelites became afraid of the Philistines	7 I Filistei però seppero che i figli d'Israele si erano radunati a Mizpa, allora i capi dei Filistei salirono contro Israele. I figli d'Israele, uditolo, ebbero paura dei Filistei.
8 and said to Samuel, "Implore the LORD our God unceasingly for us, to save us from the clutches of the Philistines."	8 Dissero dunque i figli d'Israele a Samuele: "Non cessare di supplicare per noi il Signore, Dio nostro, perché ci salvi dalla mano dei Filistei".
9 Samuel therefore took an unweaned lamb and offered it entire as a holocaust to the LORD. He implored the LORD for Israel, and the LORD heard him.	9 Allora Samuele prese un agnello da latte e lo offrì per intero in olocausto al Signore, poi implorò il Signore in favore d'Israele, ed egli lo esaudì.
10 While Samuel was offering the holocaust, the Philistines advanced to join battle with Israel. That day, however, the LORD thundered loudly against the Philistines, and threw them into such confusion that they were defeated by Israel.	10 Mentre Samuele stava offrendo il sacrificio, i Filistei avanzarono in battaglia contro Israele, ma il Signore in quel giorno tuonò con grande fragore contro i Filistei, portando lo scompiglio, ed essi furono sconfitti di fronte a Israele.
11 Thereupon the Israelites sallied forth from Mizpah and pursued the Philistines, harrying them down beyond Beth-car.	11 Gli uomini d'Israele, usciti da Mizpa, inseguirono i Filistei e li batterono fino al di sotto di Bet-Car.
12 Samuel then took a stone and placed it between Mizpah and Jeshanah; he named it Ebenezer, explaining, "To this point the LORD helped us."	12 Samuele, presa una pietra, la drizzò tra Mizpa e Iesana e la chiamò Eben-Ezer dicendo: "Fin qui ci ha aiutato il Signore".
13 Thus were the Philistines subdued, never again to enter the territory of Israel, for the LORD was severe with them as long as Samuel lived.	13 I Filistei furono repressi e non tentarono più di entrare nei confini d'Israele, e la mano del Signore pesò sui Filistei per tutti gli anni di Samuele.
14 The cities from Ekron to Gath which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to them. Israel also freed the territory of these cities from the dominion of the Philistines. Moreover there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.	14 Le città prese dai Filistei a Israele ritornarono a Israele, da Accaron fino a Gat, e Israele liberò quei territori dalle mani dei Filistei. 15 Samuel judged Israel as long as he lived.	15 Samuele fu giudice su Israele per tutto il tempo della sua vita.
16 He made a yearly journey, passing through Bethel, Gilgal and Mizpah and judging Israel at each of these sanctuaries.	16 Ogni anno andava in giro passando per Betel, Gàlgala e Mizpa, esercitando l'ufficio di giudice in Israele in tutti questi luoghi.
17 Then he used to return to Ramah, for that was his home. There, too, he judged Israel and built an altar to the LORD.	17 Il suo recapito però era a Rama, poiché là era la sua casa e là faceva da giudice su Israele. Vi costruì un altare al Signore.
