1 Samuel 7

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 So the inhabitants of Kiriath-jearim came for the ark of the LORD and brought it into the house of Abinadab on the hill, appointing his son Eleazar as guardian of the ark of the LORD.	1 Les gens de Qiryat-Yéarim vinrent et firent monter l'arche de Yahvé. Ils la conduisirent dans lamaison d'Abinadab, sur la hauteur, et ils consacrèrent son fils Eléazar pour garder l'arche de Yahvé.
2 From the day the ark came to rest in Kiriath-jearim a long time-twenty years-elapsed, and the whole Israelite population turned to the LORD.	2 Depuis le jour où l'arche fut installée à Qiryat-Yéarim un long temps s'écoula -- vingt ans -- ettoute la maison d'Israël soupira après Yahvé.
3 Samuel said to them: "If you wish with your whole heart to return to the LORD, put away your foreign gods and your Ashtaroth, devote yourselves to the LORD, and worship him alone. Then he will deliver you from the power of the Philistines."	3 Alors Samuel parla ainsi à toute la maison d'Israël: "Si c'est de tout votre coeur que vous revenez àYahvé, écartez les dieux étrangers du milieu de vous, et les Astartés, fixez votre coeur en Yahvé et ne servez quelui: alors il vous délivrera de la main des Philistins."
4 So the Israelites put away their Baals and Ashtaroth, and worshiped the LORD alone.	4 Les Israélites écartèrent donc les Baals et les Astartés et ne servirent que Yahvé.
5 Samuel then gave orders, "Gather all Israel to Mizpah, that I may pray to the LORD for you."	5 Samuel dit: "Rassemblez tout Israël à Miçpa et je supplierai Yahvé pour vous."
6 When they were gathered at Mizpah, they drew water and poured it out on the ground before the LORD, and they fasted that day, confessing, "We have sinned against the LORD." It was at Mizpah that Samuel began to judge the Israelites.	6 Ils se rassemblèrent donc à Miçpa, ils puisèrent de l'eau qu'ils répandirent devant Yahvé, ilsjeûnèrent ce jour-là et ils dirent: "Nous avons péché contre Yahvé." Et Samuel jugea les Israélites à Miçpa.
7 When the Philistines heard that the Israelites had gathered at Mizpah, their lords went up against Israel. Hearing this, the Israelites became afraid of the Philistines	7 Lorsque les Philistins surent que les Israélites s'étaient rassemblés à Miçpa, les princes desPhilistins montèrent à l'attaque d'Israël. Les Israélites l'apprirent et ils eurent peur des Philistins.
8 and said to Samuel, "Implore the LORD our God unceasingly for us, to save us from the clutches of the Philistines."	8 Ils dirent à Samuel: "Ne cesse pas d'invoquer Yahvé notre Dieu, pour qu'il nous délivre de la maindes Philistins."
9 Samuel therefore took an unweaned lamb and offered it entire as a holocaust to the LORD. He implored the LORD for Israel, and the LORD heard him.	9 Samuel prit un agneau de lait et l'offrit en holocauste complet à Yahvé, il invoqua Yahvé pourIsraël et Yahvé l'exauça.
10 While Samuel was offering the holocaust, the Philistines advanced to join battle with Israel. That day, however, the LORD thundered loudly against the Philistines, and threw them into such confusion that they were defeated by Israel.	10 Pendant que Samuel offrait l'holocauste, les Philistins engagèrent le combat contre Israël, maisYahvé ce jour-là tonna à grand fracas sur les Philistins, il les frappa de panique et ils furent battus devant Israël.
11 Thereupon the Israelites sallied forth from Mizpah and pursued the Philistines, harrying them down beyond Beth-car.	11 Les gens d'Israël sortirent de Miçpa et poursuivirent les Philistins, et ils les battirent jusqu'endessous de Bet-Kar.
12 Samuel then took a stone and placed it between Mizpah and Jeshanah; he named it Ebenezer, explaining, "To this point the LORD helped us."	12 Alors Samuel prit une pierre et la dressa entre Miçpa et La Dent, et il lui donna le nom d'Eben-ha-Ezèr, en disant: "C'est jusqu'ici que Yahvé nous a secourus."
13 Thus were the Philistines subdued, never again to enter the territory of Israel, for the LORD was severe with them as long as Samuel lived.	13 Les Philistins furent abaissés. Ils ne revinrent plus sur le territoire d'Israël et la main de Yahvépesa sur les Philistins pendant toute la vie de Samuel.
14 The cities from Ekron to Gath which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to them. Israel also freed the territory of these cities from the dominion of the Philistines. Moreover there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.	14 Les villes que les Philistins avaient prises à Israël lui firent retour depuis Eqrôn jusqu'à Gat, etIsraël délivra leur territoire de la main des Philistins. Il y eut paix entre Israël et les Amorites.
15 Samuel judged Israel as long as he lived.	15 Samuel jugea Israël pendant toute sa vie.
16 He made a yearly journey, passing through Bethel, Gilgal and Mizpah and judging Israel at each of these sanctuaries.	16 Il allait chaque année faire une tournée par Béthel, Gilgal, Miçpa, et il jugeait Israël en tous cesendroits.
17 Then he used to return to Ramah, for that was his home. There, too, he judged Israel and built an altar to the LORD.	17 Puis il revenait à Rama, car c'est là qu'il avait sa maison et qu'il jugeait Israël. Il y construisit unautel à Yahvé.
