1 This "Melchizedek, king of Salem and priest of God Most High," "met Abraham as he returned from his defeat of the kings" and "blessed him."	1 Or questo Melchisedech, re di Salem, sacerdote del sommo Dio, che andò incontro ad Abramo, quando questi ritornava dalla sconfitta dei re, che lo benedisse,
2 And Abraham apportioned to him "a tenth of everything." His name first means righteous king, and he was also "king of Salem," that is, king of peace.	2 che da Abramo ricevette la decima d'ogni cosa, che secondo la significazione del nome, è « re di Giustizia » ed è anche re di Salem, vale a dire « re di pace »,
3 Without father, mother, or ancestry, without beginning of days or end of life, thus made to resemble the Son of God, he remains a priest forever.	3 che è senza padre, senza madre, senza genealogia, senza principio di giorni, senza fine di vita (somiglia proprio al Figlio di Dio), rimane sacerdote in eterno.
4 See how great he is to whom the patriarch "Abraham (indeed) gave a tenth" of his spoils.	4 Or osservate quanto diventi grande Melchisedech, se perfino il patriarca Abramo gli diede le decime della miglior preda,
5 The descendants of Levi who receive the office of priesthood have a commandment according to the law to exact tithes from the people, that is, from their brothers, although they also have come from the loins of Abraham.	5 invece quelli dei figli di Levi che sono assunti al sacerdozio, hanno per legge ordine di ricvere le decime dal popolo, cioè dai propri fratelli, quantunque usciti anch'essi, dai lombi d'Abramo;
6 But he who was not of their ancestry received tithes from Abraham and blessed him who had received the promises.	6 mentre Melchisedech, non uscito dalla loro stirpe, ricevette le decime da Abramo e benedì chi aveva le promesse.
7 Unquestionably, a lesser person is blessed by a greater.	7 Or senza dubbio è il minore che riceve la benedizione dal maggiore.
8 In the one case, mortal men receive tithes; in the other, a man of whom it is testified that he lives on.	8 Inoltre qui ricevon le decime uomini mortali, là invece uno del quale è attestata la vita.
9 One might even say that Levi himself, who receives tithes, was tithed through Abraham,	9 E potrebbe dirsi che in Abramo pagò le decime anche Levi che le riscuote,
10 for he was still in his father's loins when Melchizedek met him.	10 perché era tuttora nei lombi del padre, quando a questo andò incontro a Melchisedech.
11 If, then, perfection came through the levitical priesthood, on the basis of which the people received the law, what need would there still have been for another priest to arise according to the order of Melchizedek, and not reckoned according to the order of Aaron?	11 Se dunque la perfezione fosse stata possibile sotto il sacerdozio levitico (chè sotto di esso il popolo ricevè la legge), qual bisogno c'era che uscisse fuori un altro sacerdote secondo l'ordine di Aronne?
12 When there is a change of priesthood, there is necessarily a change of law as well.	12 Mutato sacerdozio, vien di necessità mutata anche la legge
13 Now he of whom these things are said belonged to a different tribe, of which no member ever officiated at the altar.	13 or Colui del quale son dette queste cose appartiene ad un'altra tribù, nessun membro della quale servì mai all'altare.
14 It is clear that our Lord arose from Judah, and in regard to that tribe Moses said nothing about priests.	14 Tutti sanno infatti che il Signor nostro nacque dalla tribù di Giuda, alla quale Mosè non parlò mai di sacerdoti.
15 It is even more obvious if another priest is raised up after the likeness of Melchizedek,	15 E la cosa si fa più evidente che mai se sorge un altro sacerdote a somiglianza di Melchisedech,
16 who has become so, not by a law expressed in a commandment concerning physical descent but by the power of a life that cannot be destroyed.	16 e divien tale non in virtù della legge dei riti carnali, ma in virtù di una vita imperitura;
17 For it is testified: "You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek."	17 ecco infatti la testimonianza che gli è resa: Tu sei sacerdote in eterno secondo l'ordine di Melchisedech.
18 On the one hand, a former commandment is annulled because of its weakness and uselessness,	18 Così viene abrogata la legge precedente per la sua debolezza ed inutilità
19 for the law brought nothing to perfection; on the other hand, a better hope is introduced, through which we draw near to God.	19 (infatti la legge non portò nulla a perfezione) e viene introdotta una migliore speranza per la quale ci accostiamo a Dio.
20 And to the degree that this happened not without the taking of an oath --for others became priests without an oath,	20 Or siccome è sacerdote non senza giuramento (gli altri sono stati fatti senza giuramento,
21 but he with an oath, through the one who said to him: "The Lord has sworn, and he will not repent: 'You are a priest forever'"--	21 ma esso col giuramento di colui che gli disse: « Il Signore l'ha giurato e non se ne pentirà: tu sei sacerdote in eterno »),
22 to that same degree has Jesus (also) become the guarantee of an (even) better covenant.	22 Gesù è diventato mallevadore di un'alleanza molto più eccellente.
23 Those priests were many because they were prevented by death from remaining in office,	23 Inoltre quelli sono stati fatti sacerdoti in gran numero, perché per la morte eran tolti dall'ufficio,

25 Therefore, he is always able to save those who approach God through him, since he lives forever to make intercession for them.	25 e quindi può anche in perpetuo salvare coloro che per mezzo suo si accostano a Dio, vivendo sempre a intercedere per noi.
26 It was fitting that we should have such a high priest: holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners, higher than the heavens.	26 E certo era conveniente che noi avessimo un tal pontefice santo, innocente, immacolato, segregato dai peccatori e sublimato sopra i cieli,
27 He has no need, as did the high priests, to offer sacrifice day after day, first for his own sins and then for those of the people; he did that once for all when he offered himself.	27 che non ha bisogno come quei sacerdoti di offrire ogni gioro sacrifizi, prima per i suoi peccati e poi per quelli del popolo, perché ciò l'ha fatto una volta per sempre, offrendo se stesso.
28 For the law appoints men subject to weakness to be high priests, but the word of the oath, which was taken after the law, appoints a son, who has been made perfect forever.	28 La legge infatti costituì sacerdoti uomini, soggetti a debolezze; ma la parola del giuramento, posteriore alla legge, costituisce il Figliolo che è perfetto in eterno.
