1 This "Melchizedek, king of Salem and priest of God Most High," "met Abraham as he returned from his defeat of the kings" and "blessed him."	1 Este Melquisedec, que era rey de Salem, sacerdote de Dios, el Altísimo, salió al encuentro de Abraham cuando este volvía de derrotar a los reyes y lo bendijo;
2 And Abraham apportioned to him "a tenth of everything." His name first means righteous king, and he was also "king of Salem," that is, king of peace.	2 y Abraham le entregó la décima parte de todo el botín. el nombre de Melquisedec significa, en primer término, «rey de justicia» y él era, además, rey de Salem, es decir, «rey de paz».
3 Without father, mother, or ancestry, without beginning of days or end of life, thus made to resemble the Son of God, he remains a priest forever.	3 De él no se menciona ni padre ni madre ni antecesores, ni comienzo ni fin de su vida: así, a semejanza del Hijo de Dios, él es sacerdote para siempre.
4 See how great he is to whom the patriarch "Abraham (indeed) gave a tenth" of his spoils.	4 Consideren ahora la grandeza de aquel a quien el mismo patriarca Abraham entregó como diezmo lo mejor del botín.
5 The descendants of Levi who receive the office of priesthood have a commandment according to the law to exact tithes from the people, that is, from their brothers, although they also have come from the loins of Abraham.	5 A los descendientes de Leví que reciben el sacerdocio, la Ley les manda percibir el diezmo del pueblo, esto es, de sus propios hermanos, que sin embargo pertenecen como ellos a la descendencia de Abraham.
6 But he who was not of their ancestry received tithes from Abraham and blessed him who had received the promises.	6 Pero Melquisedec, que no tenía ascendencia común con ellos, recibió de Abraham el diezmo y bendijo al depositario de las promesas.
7 Unquestionably, a lesser person is blessed by a greater.	7 Ahora bien, no cabe duda que corresponde al superior bendecir al inferior.
8 In the one case, mortal men receive tithes; in the other, a man of whom it is testified that he lives on.	8 Además, en el caso de los descendientes de Leví, los que perciben el diezmo son hombres mortales, mientras que en el caso de Melquisedec, se trata de alguien de quien se atestigua que vive.
9 One might even say that Levi himself, who receives tithes, was tithed through Abraham,	9 Por último, se puede decir que el mismo Leví, a quien corresponde percibir los diezmos, pagó los suyos a Melquisedec en la persona de Abraham,
10 for he was still in his father's loins when Melchizedek met him.	10 porque, en cierto sentido, Leví ya estaba en el cuerpo de su padre Abraham cuando Melquisedec le salió al encuentro.
11 If, then, perfection came through the levitical priesthood, on the basis of which the people received the law, what need would there still have been for another priest to arise according to the order of Melchizedek, and not reckoned according to the order of Aaron?	11 Por lo tanto, si se podía alcanzar la perfección por medio del sacerdocio levítico, sobre el cual se funda la Ley dada al pueblo, ¿qué necesidad había entonces de que surgiera otro sacerdote, según el orden de Melquisedec y no según el orden de Aarón?
12 When there is a change of priesthood, there is necessarily a change of law as well.	12 Porque el cambio de sacerdocio implica necesariamente un cambio de Ley.
13 Now he of whom these things are said belonged to a different tribe, of which no member ever officiated at the altar.	13 De hecho, Jesús, de quien se dicen estas cosas, pertenecía a una tribu que no era la de Leví, ninguno de cuyos miembros se dedicó al servicio del altar.
14 It is clear that our Lord arose from Judah, and in regard to that tribe Moses said nothing about priests.	14 Porque es sabido que nuestro Señor desciende de Judá, y de esa tribu, nunca habló Moisés al referirse a los sacerdotes.
15 It is even more obvious if another priest is raised up after the likeness of Melchizedek,	15 Y esto se hace más evidente aún, si se tiene en cuenta que este nuevo sacerdote, a semejanza de Melquisedec,
16 who has become so, not by a law expressed in a commandment concerning physical descent but by the power of a life that cannot be destroyed.	16 se constituye, no según la disposición de una ley meramente humana, sino según el poder de una vida indestructible.
17 For it is testified: "You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek."	17 De él se ha atestiguado: "Tú eres sacerdote para siempre, según el orden de Melquisedec".
18 On the one hand, a former commandment is annulled because of its weakness and uselessness,	18 De esta manera queda derogada la disposición anterior, en razón de su ineficacia e inutilidad
19 for the law brought nothing to perfection; on the other hand, a better hope is introduced, through which we draw near to God.	19 –ya que la Ley es incapaz de conducir a la perfección– y se introduce una esperanza mejor, que nos permite acercarnos a Dios.
20 And to the degree that this happened not without the taking of an oath --for others became priests without an oath,	20 Además, todo esto ha sido confirmado con un juramento. Porque, mientras los descendientes de Leví fueron instituidos sacerdotes sin la garantía de un juramento,
21 but he with an oath, through the one who said to him: "The Lord has sworn, and he will not repent: 'You are a priest forever'"--	21 Jesús lo fue con un juramento, el de aquel que le dijo: "Juró el Señor y no se arrepentirá: Tú eres sacerdote para siempre".
22 to that same degree has Jesus (also) become the guarantee of an (even) better covenant.	22 Por lo tanto, Jesús ha llegado a ser el garante de una Alianza superior.
23 Those priests were many because they were prevented by death from remaining in office,	23 Los otros sacerdotes tuvieron que ser muchos, porque la muerte les impedía permanecer;
24 but he, because he remains forever, has a priesthood that does not pass away.	24 pero Jesús, como permanece para siempre, posee un sacerdocio inmutable.
25 Therefore, he is always able to save those who approach God through him, since he lives forever to make intercession for them.	25 De ahí que él puede salvar en forma definitiva a los que se acercan a Dios por su intermedio, ya que vive eternamente para interceder por ellos.
26 It was fitting that we should have such a high priest: holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners, higher than the heavens.	26 El es el Sumo Sacerdote que necesitábamos: santo, inocente, sin mancha, separado de los pecadores y elevado por encima del cielo.
27 He has no need, as did the high priests, to offer sacrifice day after day, first for his own sins and then for those of the people; he did that once for all when he offered himself.	27 El no tiene necesidad, como los otros sumos sacerdotes, de ofrecer sacrificios cada día, primero por sus pecados, y después por los del pueblo. Esto lo hizo de una vez para siempre, ofreciéndose a sí mismo.
28 For the law appoints men subject to weakness to be high priests, but the word of the oath, which was taken after the law, appoints a son, who has been made perfect forever.	28 La Ley, en efecto, establece como sumos sacerdotes a hombres débiles; en cambio, la palabra del juramento –que es posterior a la Ley– establece a un Hijo que llegó a ser perfecto para siempre.
