1 We ask you, brothers, with regard to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our assembling with him,	1 Wir bitten euch aber, Brüder, bezüglich der Ankunft unseres Herrn Jesus Christus und unserer Vereinigung mit ihm:
2 not to be shaken out of your minds suddenly, or to be alarmed either by a "spirit," or by an oral statement, or by a letter allegedly from us to the effect that the day of the Lord is at hand.	2 Laßt euch nicht so schnell die Besinnung rauben und euch schrecken, weder durch eine Geistesoffenbarung noch durch ein angebliches Wort oder Schreiben von uns, als stünde der Tag des Herrn nahe bevor.
3 Let no one deceive you in any way. For unless the apostasy comes first and the lawless one is revealed, the one doomed to perdition,	3 Niemand führe euch irre auf irgendeine Weise. Denn zuvor muß der Abfall kommen und offenbar werden der Mensch der Gesetzlosigkeit, der Sohn des Verderbens,
4 who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god and object of worship, so as to seat himself in the temple of God, claiming that he is a god--	4 der Widersacher, der "sich über alles erhebt, was Gott heißt" (Dan 11,36) oder Gottesverehrung, so daß er sich in das Haus Gottes setzt und von sich erklärt, daß er Gott sei.
5 do you not recall that while I was still with you I told you these things?	5 Erinnert ihr euch nicht, daß ich dies euch sagte, da ich noch bei euch war?
6 And now you know what is restraining, that he may be revealed in his time.	6 Und nun? Ihr wißt, was im Wege steht, daß er offenbar werde zu seiner Zeit.
7 For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work. But the one who restrains is to do so only for the present, until he is removed from the scene.	7 Denn das Geheimnis der Gesetzlosigkeit ist schon am Werk; nur muß der im Wege Stehende noch weggeräumt werden,
8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord (Jesus) will kill with the breath of his mouth and render powerless by the manifestation of his coming,	8 und dann wird sich der Gesetzlose offenbaren, den der Herr Jesus "hinwegnehmen wird mit dem Hauch seines Mundes" (Is 11,4) und vernichten wird mit dem Aufleuchten seines Kommens.
9 the one whose coming springs from the power of Satan in every mighty deed and in signs and wonders that lie,	9 Sein Auftreten zeigt sich entsprechend der Kraftentfaltung des Satans in jeder Art von Macht, trügerischen Zeichen und Wundern,
10 and in every wicked deceit for those who are perishing because they have not accepted the love of truth so that they may be saved.	10 in jeder Art böser Verführung für jene, die verlorengehen, weil sie der Liebe zur Wahrheit nicht Einlaß gaben, um gerettet zu werden.
11 Therefore, God is sending them a deceiving power so that they may believe the lie,	11 Daher schickt ihnen Gott die Kraftentfaltung der Verführung, daß sie der Lüge glauben,
12 that all who have not believed the truth but have approved wrongdoing may be condemned.	12 damit alle das Gericht erfahren, die der Wahrheit nicht glaubten, sondern Gefallen hatten am Frevel.
13 But we ought to give thanks to God for you always, brothers loved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in truth.	13 Wir aber schulden Gott allezeit Dank um euretwillen, vom Herrn geliebte Brüder, daß Gott euch von Anfang an erwählt hat zum Heil in der Heiligung des Geistes und im Glauben an die Wahrheit.
14 To this end he has (also) called you through our gospel to possess the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.	14 Hierzu berief er euch durch unser Evangelium, zur Teilhabe nämlich an der Herrlichkeit unseres Herrn Jesus Christus.
15 Therefore, brothers, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught, either by an oral statement or by a letter of ours.	15 So steht denn fest, Brüder, und haltet euch an die Überlieferungen, die ihr gelehrt wurdet, sei es durch ein Wort, sei es durch einen Brief von uns.
16 May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting encouragement and good hope through his grace,	16 Er aber, unser Herr Jesus Christus, und Gott, unser Vater, der uns liebte und unvergänglichen Trost uns gab und gute Hoffnung in Gnade,
17 encourage your hearts and strengthen them in every good deed and word.	17 er richte eure Herzen auf und stärke sie in jedem guten Werk und Wort!
