1 Then the high priest asked, "Is this so?"	1 Dijo el sumo sacerdote: «¿Es esto así?».
2 And he replied, "My brothers and fathers, listen. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham while he was in Mesopotamia, before he had settled in Haran,	2 Él respondió: «Hermanos y padres, escuchad. El Dios de la gloria se apareció a nuestro padre Abrahán cuando estaba en Mesopotamia, antes de establecerse en Jarán,
3 and said to him, 'Go forth from your land and (from) your kinsfolk to the land that I will show you.'	3 y le dijo: Sal de tu tierra y de tu parentela y vete a la tierra que te mostraré.
4 So he went forth from the land of the Chaldeans and settled in Haran. And from there, after his father died, he made him migrate to this land where you now dwell.	4 Entonces, saliendo de la tierra de los caldeos, se instaló en Jarán; después de la muerte de su padre, le hizo trasladar su morada de allí a esta tierra que vosotros habitáis ahora.
5 Yet he gave him no inheritance in it, not even a foot's length, but he did promise to give it to him and his descendants as a possession, even though he was childless.	5 No le dio herencia en ella, ni siquiera lo que pisa un pie, pero prometió dársela en posesión a él y a su descendencia después de él, cuando aún no tenía un hijo.
6 And God spoke thus, 'His descendants shall be aliens in a land not their own, where they shall be enslaved and oppressed for four hundred years;	6 Y Dios habló así: Que su descendencia será peregrina en tierra extraña, la someterán a esclavitud y la maltratarán durante cuatrocientos años,
7 but I will bring judgment on the nation they serve,' God said, 'and after that they will come out and worship me in this place.'	7 pero a la nación a la que servirán como esclavos la juzgaré yo, dice Dios, y después de esto saldrán y me adorarán en este lugar.
8 Then he gave him the covenant of circumcision, and so he became the father of Isaac, and circumcised him on the eighth day, as Isaac did Jacob, and Jacob the twelve patriarchs.	8 Y le dio la circuncisión como signo de la alianza; y así engendró a Isaac y lo circuncidó el día octavo, e Isaac a Jacob y Jacob a los doce patriarcas.
9 "And the patriarchs, jealous of Joseph, sold him into slavery in Egypt; but God was with him	9 Los patriarcas, envidiosos de José, lo vendieron con destino a Egipto. Pero Dios estaba con él,
10 and rescued him from all his afflictions. He granted him favor and wisdom before Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, who put him in charge of Egypt and (of) his entire household.	10 pues lo libró de todas sus tribulaciones, le concedió sabiduría y lo hizo grato al faraón, rey de Egipto, el cual lo constituyó jefe de Egipto y de toda su casa.
11 Then a famine and great affliction struck all Egypt and Canaan, and our ancestors could find no food;	11 Sobrevino entonces en todo Egipto y Canaán hambre y una gran tribulación y nuestros padres no encontraron víveres.
12 but when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent our ancestors there a first time.	12 Habiendo oído Jacob que había trigo en Egipto, envió a nuestros padres una primera vez;
13 The second time, Joseph made himself known to his brothers, and Joseph's family became known to Pharaoh.	13 a la vez siguiente se dio a conocer José a sus hermanos y conoció el faraón el linaje de José.
14 Then Joseph sent for his father Jacob, inviting him and his whole clan, seventy-five persons;	14 José envió mensajeros para que trajesen a su padre, Jacob, y a toda su familia, unas setenta y cinco personas.
15 and Jacob went down to Egypt. And he and our ancestors died	15 Bajó, pues, Jacob a Egipto y murieron él y nuestros padres,
16 and were brought back to Shechem and placed in the tomb that Abraham had purchased for a sum of money from the sons of Hamor at Shechem.	16 y fueron trasladados a Siquén y depositados en la sepultura que había comprado Abrahán a precio de plata a los hijos de Emor en Siquén.
17 "When the time drew near for the fulfillment of the promise that God pledged to Abraham, the people had increased and become very numerous in Egypt,	17 A medida que se acercaba el tiempo de la promesa que había hecho Dios a Abrahán, creció el pueblo y se multiplicó en Egipto,
18 until another king who knew nothing of Joseph came to power (in Egypt).	18 hasta que surgió otro rey en Egipto que no había conocido a José.
19 He dealt shrewdly with our people and oppressed (our) ancestors by forcing them to expose their infants, that they might not survive.	19 Este rey, actuando astutamente contra nuestro linaje, maltrató a nuestros padres hasta el punto de forzarlos a abandonar a los recién nacidos para que no sobrevivieran.
20 At this time Moses was born, and he was extremely beautiful. For three months he was nursed in his father's house;	20 En este tiempo nació Moisés, que era hermoso a los ojos de Dios. Fue criado durante tres meses en la casa de su padre,
21 but when he was exposed, Pharaoh's daughter adopted him and brought him up as her own son.	21 después fue abandonado y lo recogió la hija del faraón, que lo hizo criar como hijo suyo.
22 Moses was educated (in) all the wisdom of the Egyptians and was powerful in his words and deeds.	22 Y fue educado Moisés en toda la sabiduría de los egipcios y era poderoso de palabra y de obra.
23 "When he was forty years old, he decided to visit his kinsfolk, the Israelites.	23 Al cumplir los cuarenta años, nació en su corazón la idea de visitar a sus hermanos, los hijos de Israel,
24 When he saw one of them treated unjustly, he defended and avenged the oppressed man by striking down the Egyptian.	24 y, habiendo visto que uno era agraviado, acudió a su defensa y vengó al injuriado, matando al egipcio.
25 He assumed (his) kinsfolk would understand that God was offering them deliverance through him, but they did not understand.	25 Pensaba que sus hermanos comprenderían que Dios iba a darles la salvación por su mano, pero no comprendieron.
26 The next day he appeared to them as they were fighting and tried to reconcile them peacefully, saying, 'Men, you are brothers. Why are you harming one another?'	26 Al día siguiente se presentó mientras se estaban peleando e intentaba ponerlos en paz, diciendo: “Hombres, sois hermanos, ¿por qué os ofendéis uno a otro?”.
27 Then the one who was harming his neighbor pushed him aside, saying, 'Who appointed you ruler and judge over us?	27 Pero el que ofendía a su compañero, lo rechazó, diciendo: “¿Quién te ha constituido jefe y juez sobre nosotros?”.
28 Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?'	28 ¿Acaso quieres matarme igual que mataste ayer al egipcio?
29 Moses fled when he heard this and settled as an alien in the land of Midian, where he became the father of two sons.	29 Moisés huyó a causa de estas palabras y vivió como forastero en tierra de Madián en la que engendró dos hijos.
30 "Forty years later, an angel appeared to him in the desert near Mount Sinai in the flame of a burning bush.	30 Pasados cuarenta años se le apareció un ángel en el desierto del monte Sinaí sobre la llama de una zarza que ardía.
31 When Moses saw it, he was amazed at the sight, and as he drew near to look at it, the voice of the Lord came,	31 Al ver la visión, Moisés se maravilló y, al acercarse para mirar mejor, se dejó oír la voz del Señor:
32 'I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob.' Then Moses, trembling, did not dare to look at it.	32 “Yo soy el Dios de tus padres, el Dios de Abrahán, de Isaac y de Jacob”. Moisés se echó a temblar y no se atrevía a mirar.
33 But the Lord said to him, 'Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground.	33 Entonces le dijo el Señor: “Quítate las sandalias de tus pies, pues el lugar donde estás es tierra santa.
34 I have witnessed the affliction of my people in Egypt and have heard their groaning, and I have come down to rescue them. Come now, I will send you to Egypt.'	34 Con mis propios ojos he visto la aflicción de mi pueblo que está en Egipto, he escuchado sus gemidos y he bajado a librarlos. Ahora ven, que voy a enviarte a Egipto”.
35 This Moses, whom they had rejected with the words, 'Who appointed you ruler and judge?' God sent as (both) ruler and deliverer, through the angel who appeared to him in the bush.	35 A este Moisés, de quien renegaron diciendo: ¿Quien te ha constituido jefe y juez?, a este envió Dios como jefe y redentor por mano del ángel que se le apareció en la zarza.
36 This man led them out, performing wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, at the Red Sea, and in the desert for forty years.	36 Este los sacó, realizando prodigios y signos en la tierra de Egipto, en el mar Rojo y en el desierto durante cuarenta años.
37 It was this Moses who said to the Israelites, 'God will raise up for you, from among your own kinsfolk, a prophet like me.'	37 Este es Moisés, que dijo a los hijos de Israel: “El Señor hará surgir de entre vuestros hermanos un profeta como yo”.
38 It was he who, in the assembly in the desert, was with the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai and with our ancestors, and he received living utterances to hand on to us.	38 Este es el que en la asamblea del desierto estuvo con el ángel que le hablaba en el monte Sinaí y con nuestros padres; el que recibió palabras de vida para transmitirlas a nosotros;
39 "Our ancestors were unwilling to obey him; instead, they pushed him aside and in their hearts turned back to Egypt,	39 este es Moisés, a quien nuestros padres no quisieron obedecer, sino que lo rechazaron y en sus corazones volvieron a Egipto,
40 saying to Aaron, 'Make us gods who will be our leaders. As for that Moses who led us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has happened to him.'	40 cuando dijeron a Aarón: “Haznos dioses que vayan delante de nosotros, porque ese Moisés que nos sacó de la tierra de Egipto, no sabemos qué ha sido de él”.
41 So they made a calf in those days, offered sacrifice to the idol, and reveled in the works of their hands.	41 Y fabricaron en aquellos días un becerro, ofrecieron un sacrificio al ídolo y celebraron gozosos un banquete en honor de las obras de sus manos.
42 Then God turned and handed them over to worship the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets: 'Did you bring me sacrifices and offerings for forty years in the desert, O house of Israel?	42 Entonces Dios se apartó de ellos y los entregó a la adoración del ejército del cielo, como está escrito en el libro de los profetas: ¿Acaso me ofrecisteis víctimas y sacrificios durante cuarenta años en el desierto, casa de Israel?
43 No, you took up the tent of Moloch and the star of (your) god Rephan, the images that you made to worship. So I shall take you into exile beyond Babylon.'	43 Tomasteis con vosotros la tienda de Moloc y la estrella de vuestro dios Refán, las imágenes que hicisteis para adorarlas. Pues yo os llevaré más allá de Babilonia.
44 "Our ancestors had the tent of testimony in the desert just as the One who spoke to Moses directed him to make it according to the pattern he had seen.	44 Nuestros padres tenían en el desierto la Tienda del Testimonio, como mandó el que dijo a Moisés que la construyera, copiando el modelo que había visto.
45 Our ancestors who inherited it brought it with Joshua when they dispossessed the nations that God drove out from before our ancestors, up to the time of David,	45 Nuestros padres recibieron como herencia esta tienda y la introdujeron, guiados por Josué, en el territorio de los gentiles, a los que Dios expulsó delante de ellos. Así estuvieron las cosas hasta el tiempo de David,
46 who found favor in the sight of God and asked that he might find a dwelling place for the house of Jacob.	46 que alcanzó el favor de Dios, y le pidió encontrar una morada para la casa de Jacob.
47 But Solomon built a house for him.	47 Pero fue Salomón el que le construyó la casa,
48 Yet the Most High does not dwell in houses made by human hands. As the prophet says:	48 aunque el Altísimo no habita en edificios construidos por manos humanas, como dice el profeta:
49 'The heavens are my throne, the earth is my footstool. What kind of house can you build for me? says the Lord, or what is to be my resting place?	49 Mi trono es el cielo; la tierra, el estrado de mis pies. ¿Qué casa me vais a construir —dice el Señor—, o qué lugar para que descanse?
50 Did not my hand make all these things?'	50 ¿No ha hecho mi mano todo esto?
51 "You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always oppose the holy Spirit; you are just like your ancestors.	51 ¡Duros de cerviz, incircuncisos de corazón y de oídos! Vosotros siempre resistís al Espíritu Santo, lo mismo que vuestros padres.
52 Which of the prophets did your ancestors not persecute? They put to death those who foretold the coming of the righteous one, whose betrayers and murderers you have now become.	52 ¿Hubo un profeta que vuestros padres no persiguieran? Ellos mataron a los que anunciaban la venida del Justo, y ahora vosotros lo habéis traicionado y asesinado;
53 You received the law as transmitted by angels, but you did not observe it."	53 recibisteis la ley por mediación de ángeles y no la habéis observado».
54 When they heard this, they were infuriated, and they ground their teeth at him.	54 Oyendo sus palabras se recomían en sus corazones y rechinaban los dientes de rabia.
55 But he, filled with the holy Spirit, looked up intently to heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God,	55 Esteban, lleno de Espíritu Santo, fijando la mirada en el cielo, vio la gloria de Dios, y a Jesús de pie a la derecha de Dios,
56 and he said, "Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God."	56 y dijo: «Veo los cielos abiertos y al Hijo del hombre de pie a la derecha de Dios».
57 But they cried out in a loud voice, covered their ears, and rushed upon him together.	57 Dando un grito estentóreo, se taparon los oídos; y, como un solo hombre, se abalanzaron sobre él,
58 They threw him out of the city, and began to stone him. The witnesses laid down their cloaks at the feet of a young man named Saul.	58 lo empujaron fuera de la ciudad y se pusieron a apedrearlo. Los testigos dejaron sus capas a los pies de un joven llamado Saulo
59 As they were stoning Stephen, he called out, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit."	59 y se pusieron a apedrear a Esteban, que repetía esta invocación: «Señor Jesús, recibe mi espíritu».
60 Then he fell to his knees and cried out in a loud voice, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them"; and when he said this, he fell asleep.	60 Luego, cayendo de rodillas y clamando con voz potente, dijo: «Señor, no les tengas en cuenta este pecado». Y, con estas palabras, murió.
