When the disturbance was over, Paul had the disciples summoned and, after encouraging them, he bade them farewell and set out on his journey to Macedonia.1 When the disturbance was over, Paul sent for the disciples and, after speaking words ofencouragement to them, said good -- bye and set out for Macedonia.
As he traveled throughout those regions, he provided many words of encouragement for them. Then he arrived in Greece,2 On his way through those areas he said many words of encouragement to them and then made hisway into Greece,
where he stayed for three months. But when a plot was made against him by the Jews as he was about to set sail for Syria, he decided to return by way of Macedonia.3 where he spent three months. He was leaving by ship for Syria when a plot organised against him bythe Jews made him decide to go back by way of Macedonia.
Sopater, the son of Pyrrhus, from Beroea, accompanied him, as did Aristarchus and Secundus from Thessalonica, Gaius from Derbe, Timothy, and Tychicus and Trophimus from Asia4 He was accompanied by Sopater, son of Pyrrhus, who came from Beroea; Aristarchus and Secunduswho came from Thessalonica; Gaius from Derbe, and Timothy, as well as Tychicus and Trophimus who werefrom Asia.
who went on ahead and waited for us at Troas.5 They al went on to Troas where they waited for us.
We sailed from Philippi after the feast of Unleavened Bread, and rejoined them five days later in Troas, where we spent a week.6 We ourselves left Philippi by ship after the days of Unleavened Bread and joined them five days later atTroas, where we stayed for a week.
On the first day of the week when we gathered to break bread, Paul spoke to them because he was going to leave on the next day, and he kept on speaking until midnight.7 On the first day of the week we met for the breaking of bread. Paul was due to leave the next day, andhe preached a sermon that went on til the middle of the night.
There were many lamps in the upstairs room where we were gathered,8 A number of lamps were lit in the upstairs room where we were assembled,
and a young man named Eutychus who was sitting on the window sill was sinking into a deep sleep as Paul talked on and on. Once overcome by sleep, he fell down from the third story and when he was picked up, he was dead.9 and as Paul went on and on, a young man called Eutychus who was sitting on the window-sil grewdrowsy and was overcome by sleep and fel to the ground three floors below. He was picked up dead.
Paul went down, threw himself upon him, and said as he embraced him, "Don't be alarmed; there is life in him."10 Paul went down and stooped to clasp the boy to him, saying, 'There is no need to worry, there is stillife in him.'
Then he returned upstairs, broke the bread, and ate; after a long conversation that lasted until daybreak, he departed.11 Then he went back upstairs where he broke the bread and ate and carried on talking til he left atdaybreak.
And they took the boy away alive and were immeasurably comforted.12 They took the boy away alive, and were greatly encouraged.
We went ahead to the ship and set sail for Assos where we were to take Paul on board, as he had arranged, since he was going overland.13 We were now to go on ahead by sea, so we set sail for Assos, where we were to take Paul on board;this was what he had arranged, for he wanted to go overland.
When he met us in Assos, we took him aboard and went on to Mitylene.14 When he rejoined us at Assos we took him aboard and went on to Mitylene.
We sailed away from there on the next day and reached a point off Chios, and a day later we reached Samos, and on the following day we arrived at Miletus.15 The next day we sailed from there and arrived opposite Chios. The second day we touched at Samosand, after stopping at Trogyllium, made Miletus the next day.
Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus in order not to lose time in the province of Asia, for he was hurrying to be in Jerusalem, if at all possible, for the day of Pentecost.16 Paul had decided to pass wide of Ephesus so as to avoid spending time in Asia, since he wasanxious to be in Jerusalem, if possible, for the day of Pentecost.
From Miletus he had the presbyters of the church at Ephesus summoned.17 From Miletus he sent for the elders of the church of Ephesus.
When they came to him, he addressed them, "You know how I lived among you the whole time from the day I first came to the province of Asia.18 When they arrived he addressed these words to them: 'You know what my way of life has been eversince the first day I set foot among you in Asia,
I served the Lord with all humility and with the tears and trials that came to me because of the plots of the Jews,19 how I have served the Lord in al humility, with al the sorrows and trials that came to me through theplots of the Jews.
and I did not at all shrink from telling you what was for your benefit, or from teaching you in public or in your homes.20 I have not hesitated to do anything that would be helpful to you; I have preached to you and instructedyou both in public and in your homes,
I earnestly bore witness for both Jews and Greeks to repentance before God and to faith in our Lord Jesus.21 urging both Jews and Greeks to turn to God and to believe in our Lord Jesus.
But now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem. What will happen to me there I do not know,22 'And now you see me on my way to Jerusalem in captivity to the Spirit; I have no idea what wilhappen to me there,
except that in one city after another the holy Spirit has been warning me that imprisonment and hardships await me.23 except that the Holy Spirit, in town after town, has made it clear to me that imprisonment andpersecution await me.
Yet I consider life of no importance to me, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to bear witness to the gospel of God's grace.24 But I do not place any value on my own life, provided that I complete the mission the Lord Jesus gaveme -- to bear witness to the good news of God's grace.
"But now I know that none of you to whom I preached the kingdom during my travels will ever see my face again.25 'I now feel sure that none of you among whom I have gone about proclaiming the kingdom wil eversee my face again.
And so I solemnly declare to you this day that I am not responsible for the blood of any of you,26 And so on this very day I swear that my conscience is clear as far as all of you are concerned,
for I did not shrink from proclaiming to you the entire plan of God.27 for I have without faltering put before you the whole of God's purpose.
Keep watch over yourselves and over the whole flock of which the holy Spirit has appointed you overseers, in which you tend the church of God that he acquired with his own blood.28 'Be on your guard for yourselves and for all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you theguardians, to feed the Church of God which he bought with the blood of his own Son.
I know that after my departure savage wolves will come among you, and they will not spare the flock.29 'I know quite wel that when I have gone fierce wolves wil invade you and will have no mercy on theflock.
And from your own group, men will come forward perverting the truth to draw the disciples away after them.30 Even from your own ranks there wil be men coming forward with a travesty of the truth on their lips toinduce the disciples to fol ow them.
So be vigilant and remember that for three years, night and day, I unceasingly admonished each of you with tears.31 So be on your guard, remembering how night and day for three years I never slackened in counsel ingeach one of you with tears.
And now I commend you to God and to that gracious word of his that can build you up and give you the inheritance among all who are consecrated.32 And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace that has power to build you up and togive you your inheritance among all the sanctified.
I have never wanted anyone's silver or gold or clothing.33 'I have never asked anyone for money or clothes;
You know well that these very hands have served my needs and my companions.34 you know for yourselves that these hands of mine earned enough to meet my needs and those of mycompanions.
In every way I have shown you that by hard work of that sort we must help the weak, and keep in mind the words of the Lord Jesus who himself said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'"35 By every means I have shown you that we must exert ourselves in this way to support the weak,remembering the words of the Lord Jesus, who himself said, "There is more happiness in giving than inreceiving." '
When he had finished speaking he knelt down and prayed with them all.36 When he had finished speaking he knelt down with them all and prayed.
They were all weeping loudly as they threw their arms around Paul and kissed him,37 By now they were all in tears; they put their arms round Paul's neck and kissed him;
for they were deeply distressed that he had said that they would never see his face again. Then they escorted him to the ship.38 what saddened them most was his saying they would never see his face again. Then they escortedhim to the ship.
