1 Meanwhile, so many people were crowding together that they were trampling one another underfoot. He began to speak, first to his disciples, "Beware of the leaven--that is, the hypocrisy--of the Pharisees.	1 Frattanto, radunatasi la folla a migliaia, tanto che si pestavano fra loro, Gesù cominciò a dire dapprima ai suoi discepoli: «Guardatevi dal lievito dei farisei, che è l’ipocrisia.
2 "There is nothing concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known.	2 Non c’è nulla di coperto che non sarà svelato, o nascosto che non sarà conosciuto.
3 Therefore whatever you have said in the darkness will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered behind closed doors will be proclaimed on the housetops.	3 Perciò quanto avrete detto nelle tenebre sarà udito nella luce, e quel che avrete detto all’orecchio, nelle stanze, sarà proclamato sui tetti.
4 I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body but after that can do no more.	4 Dico a voi, amici miei, non dovete temere coloro che uccidono il corpo, e, oltre a ciò, non possono fare di più.
5 I shall show you whom to fear. Be afraid of the one who after killing has the power to cast into Gehenna; yes, I tell you, be afraid of that one.	5 Vi mostrerò io chi dovete temere: temete colui il quale, oltre a togliere la vita, ha potere di gettare nella Geenna; questi, sì, dovete temere.
6 Are not five sparrows sold for two small coins? Yet not one of them has escaped the notice of God.	6 Cinque passeri non si vendono forse per due assi? Eppure non uno di essi è dimenticato al cospetto di Dio.
7 Even the hairs of your head have all been counted. Do not be afraid. You are worth more than many sparrows.	7 Ma anche i capelli del vostro capo sono tutti contati. Non temete, voi valete ben più di molti passeri.
8 I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before others the Son of Man will acknowledge before the angels of God.	8 Ora, vi dico: chiunque si dichiarerà per me dinanzi agli uomini, anche il Figlio dell’uomo si dichiarerà per lui dinanzi agli angeli di Dio;
9 But whoever denies me before others will be denied before the angels of God.	9 ma chiunque mi avrà rinnegato dinanzi agli uomini sarà rinnegato dinanzi agli angeli di Dio.
10 "Everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but the one who blasphemes against the holy Spirit will not be forgiven.	10 E chiunque avrà detto una parola contro il Figlio dell’uomo sarà perdonato, ma chi avrà bestemmiato contro lo Spirito Santo non sarà perdonato.
11 When they take you before synagogues and before rulers and authorities, do not worry about how or what your defense will be or about what you are to say.	11 Quando, poi, vi trascineranno al cospetto delle sinagoghe, delle autorità e dei magistrati, non vi preoccupate della maniera con la quale dovete difendervi e di ciò che dovete dire:
12 For the holy Spirit will teach you at that moment what you should say."	12 lo Spirito Santo vi insegnerà, in quella stessa ora, quel che bisognerà dire».
13 Someone in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to share the inheritance with me."	13 Gli disse uno della folla: «Maestro, di’ a mio fratello che divida con me l’eredità».
14 He replied to him, "Friend, who appointed me as your judge and arbitrator?"	14 Ma egli rispose: «Uomo, chi mi ha costituito giudice o arbitro sopra di voi?»
15 Then he said to the crowd, "Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one's life does not consist of possessions."	15 Poi disse loro: «Badate a difendervi da ogni avidità, perché non dipende la vita di alcuno dall’abbondanza, dai beni che possiede».
16 Then he told them a parable. "There was a rich man whose land produced a bountiful harvest.	16 Disse poi loro una parabola: «A un uomo ricco fruttò bene la campagna
17 He asked himself, 'What shall I do, for I do not have space to store my harvest?'	17 ed egli ragionava tra sé: “Che debbo fare che non ho dove depositare il mio raccolto?”.
18 And he said, 'This is what I shall do: I shall tear down my barns and build larger ones. There I shall store all my grain and other goods	18 E disse: “Farò così: demolirò i miei granai e ne costruirò di più grandi, e vi raccoglierò tutto il frumento e i miei beni,
19 and I shall say to myself, "Now as for you, you have so many good things stored up for many years, rest, eat, drink, be merry!"	19 e dirò all’anima mia: Anima mia, hai molti beni in serbo per molti anni; riposati, mangia, bevi e rallegrati”.
20 But God said to him, 'You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?'	20 Ma Dio gli disse: “Insensato, questa notte stessa ti sarà domandata l’anima tua; e a chi andrà ciò che hai messo in serbo?”.
21 Thus will it be for the one who stores up treasure for himself but is not rich in what matters to God."	21 Così accade di chi fa tesoro per sé e non arricchisce dinanzi a Dio».
22 He said to (his) disciples, "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life and what you will eat, or about your body and what you will wear.	22 Disse, poi, ai suoi discepoli: «Perciò vi dico: non vi affannate per la vita, di quel che mangerete, né per il vostro corpo, di che vi vestirete.
23 For life is more than food and the body more than clothing.	23 La vita, infatti, vale più del cibo ed il corpo più del vestito.
24 Notice the ravens: they do not sow or reap; they have neither storehouse nor barn, yet God feeds them. How much more important are you than birds!	24 Osservate i corvi: non seminano né mietono; non hanno dispensa né granaio, eppure Dio li nutre. Quanto più degli uccelli valete voi!
25 Can any of you by worrying add a moment to your lifespan?	25 E chi di voi, affannandosi, può aggiungere un cubito alla lunghezza della sua vita?
26 If even the smallest things are beyond your control, why are you anxious about the rest?	26 Se dunque neppure il minimo potete, perché vi affannate del resto?
27 Notice how the flowers grow. They do not toil or spin. But I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of them.	27 Osservate i gigli, come crescono: non filano né tessono; vi dico ero: neppure Salomone, in tutta la sua gloria, fu mai vestito come uno di essi.
28 If God so clothes the grass in the field that grows today and is thrown into the oven tomorrow, will he not much more provide for you, O you of little faith?	28 Se, dunque, nel campo, Dio veste così l’erba che oggi è e domani si butta al forno, quanto più voi, uomini di poca fede?
29 As for you, do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, and do not worry anymore.	29 Non valere dunque, cercare che cosa mangerete e che cosa berrete, e non siate inquieti;
30 All the nations of the world seek for these things, and your Father knows that you need them.	30 perché di tutto questo si preoccupano i pagani del mondo, ma il vostro Padre sa che avete bisogno di queste cose.
31 Instead, seek his kingdom, and these other things will be given you besides.	31 Cercate piuttosto il Suo regno, e queste cose vi saranno date in più.
32 Do not be afraid any longer, little flock, for your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom.	32 Non temere, piccolo gregge, perché è piaciuto al Padre vostro di darvi il regno.
33 Sell your belongings and give alms. Provide money bags for yourselves that do not wear out, an inexhaustible treasure in heaven that no thief can reach nor moth destroy.	33 Vendete ciò che possedete e datelo in elemosina, fatevi borse che non invecchiano, un tesoro che non viene meno nei cieli, dove nessun ladro giunge né tignola consuma.
34 For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.	34 Perché dov’è il vostro tesoro» là sarà anche il vostro cuore.
35 "Gird your loins and light your lamps	35 Tenete i vostri fianchi cinti e le lucerne accese;
36 and be like servants who await their master's return from a wedding, ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks.	36 e voi siate come uomini che aspettano il loro padrone al suo ritorno dalle nozze per aprirgli subito, appena viene e picchia.
37 Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival. Amen, I say to you, he will gird himself, have them recline at table, and proceed to wait on them.	37 Beati quei servi che il padrone, al suo arrivo, troverà desti, In verità vi dico: egli si cingerà e li farà mettere a tavola e si presenterà a servirli.
38 And should he come in the second or third watch and find them prepared in this way, blessed are those servants.	38 E se verrà alla seconda e alla terza veglia, e troverà le cose così, beati loro!
39 Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour when the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into.	39 Sappiate però che se il padre di famiglia conoscesse l’ora in cui viene il ladro, non si lascerebbe sfondare la casa.
40 You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come."	40 Tenetevi pronti anche voi, perché nell’ora che voi non supponete il Figlio dell’uomo viene».
41 Then Peter said, "Lord, is this parable meant for us or for everyone?"	41 Disse allora Pietro: «Signore, questa parabola la dici per noi o anche per tutti?»
42 And the Lord replied, "Who, then, is the faithful and prudent steward whom the master will put in charge of his servants to distribute (the) food allowance at the proper time?	42 E il Signore disse: «Qual è dunque, l’intendente fedele, saggio, che il padrone porrà a capo della sua servitù per distribuire a suo tempo la razione di frumento?
43 Blessed is that servant whom his master on arrival finds doing so.	43 Beato quel servo che il padrone, quando arriva, troverà in tal modo occupato!
44 Truly, I say to you, he will put him in charge of all his property.	44 Veramente vi dico: egli lo metterà a capo di tutte le sue sostanze.
45 But if that servant says to himself, 'My master is delayed in coming,' and begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants, to eat and drink and get drunk,	45 Ma se quel servo dice in cuor suo: “Il mio padrone tarda a venire” e si mette a picchiare i servi e le serve, a mangiare, a bere e ad ubriacarsi,
46 then that servant's master will come on an unexpected day and at an unknown hour and will punish him severely and assign him a place with the unfaithful.	46 il padrone di quel servo verrà nel giorno in cui l’altro non se lo aspetta e nell’ora che non conosce; e lo punirà severamente, e gli farà subire la sorte degli infedeli.
47 That servant who knew his master's will but did not make preparations nor act in accord with his will shall be beaten severely;	47 Quel servo che, conoscendo la volontà del suo padrone, non ha apparecchiato o agito secondo la volontà di lui, riceverà molte percosse;
48 and the servant who was ignorant of his master's will but acted in a way deserving of a severe beating shall be beaten only lightly. Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.	48 colui, invece, che, senza conoscerla, ha pure fatto cose degne di percosse, ne riceverà poche. A chi molto fu dato molto sarà domandato; e a chi fu molto confidato molto più sarà richiesto.
49 "I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing!	49 Fuoco son venuto a gettare sulla terra, e che voglio se già si accese?
50 There is a baptism with which I must be baptized, and how great is my anguish until it is accomplished!	50 Devo ricevere un battesimo, e come sono angustiato finché non sia compiuto!
51 Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.	51 Credete che pace io sia venuto a dare in terra? No, vi dico, ma piuttosto la divisione.
52 From now on a household of five will be divided, three against two and two against three;	52 D’ora in poi, infatti, ci saranno in una casa cinque persone divise, tre contro due e due contro tre:
53 a father will be divided against his son and a son against his father, a mother against her daughter and a daughter against her mother, a mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law."	53 saranno divisi padre contro figlio e figlio contro padre, madre contro figlia e figlia contro madre, suocera contro nuora e nuora contro suocera»,
54 He also said to the crowds, "When you see (a) cloud rising in the west you say immediately that it is going to rain--and so it does;	54 Diceva ancora alle folle: «Quando vedete una nuvola levarsi a ponente, subito dite: “Viene la pioggia”, e così avviene;
55 and when you notice that the wind is blowing from the south you say that it is going to be hot--and so it is.	55 e quando soffia vento dal sud dite: “Farà caldo”, e succede.
56 You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky; why do you not know how to interpret the present time?	56 Ipocriti, sapete discernere l’aspetto della terra e del cielo, e come non discernete questo tempo?
57 "Why do you not judge for yourselves what is right?	57 E perché da voi stessi non giudicate ciò che è giusto?
58 If you are to go with your opponent before a magistrate, make an effort to settle the matter on the way; otherwise your opponent will turn you over to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the constable, and the constable throw you into prison.	58 Così, quando vai col tuo avversario dall’autorità, cerca di sbrigartela con lui lungo la strada, perché egli non ti trascini dal giudice e il giudice ti consegni all’esecutore e l’esecutore non ti getti in prigione.
59 I say to you, you will not be released until you have paid the last penny."	59 Ti dico che non ne uscirai prima di aver restituito fino all’ultimo spicciolo».
