Jeremiah 18

1 This word came to Jeremiah from the LORD:	1 Questo è l'ordine che fu imposto a Geremia da parte del Signore:
2 Rise up, be off to the potter's house; there I will give you my message.	2 "A'lzati e scendi alla casa del vasaio e là ti farò ascoltare le mie parole".
3 I went down to the potter's house and there he was, working at the wheel.	3 Allora io scesi alla casa del vasaio ed eccolo: stava facendo un lavoro presso il tornio.
4 Whenever the object of clay which he was making turned out badly in his hand, he tried again, making of the clay another object of whatever sort he pleased.	4 Ma il vaso che egli stava facendo con la creta si guastò tra le mani del vasaio; quindi prese a fare un altro vaso, come pareva giusto agli occhi suoi.
5 Then the word of the Lord came to me:	5 Allora la parola del Signore mi fu rivolta in questi termini:
6 Can I not do to you, house of Israel, as this potter has done? says the LORD. Indeed, like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, house of Israel.	6 "Forse che io non posso fare a voi, casa di Israele, come questo vasaio? Oracolo del Signore. Ecco: come la creta nelle mani del vasaio, così siete voi nella mia mano, casa di Israele!
7 Sometimes I threaten to uproot and tear down and destroy a nation or a kingdom.	7 A volte contro una nazione o contro un regno io decreto di sradicare, di abbattere e distruggere.
8 But if that nation which I have threatened turns from its evil, I also repent of the evil which I threatened to do.	8 Ma se quella nazione alla quale io avevo parlato si ritrae dalla sua malvagità, allora io mi pento per quella sventura che avevo progettato di infliggerle.
9 Sometimes, again, I promise to build up and plant a nation or a kingdom.	9 Altra volta per una nazione o per un regno io decreto di edificare e di piantare.
10 But if that nation does what is evil in my eyes, refusing to obey my voice, I repent of the good with which I promised to bless it.	10 Ma se agisce male agli occhi miei, non ascoltando la mia voce, allora io mi pento del bene con il quale io avevo pensato di beneficarla.
11 And now, tell this to the men of Judah and the citizens of Jerusalem: Thus says the LORD: Take care! I am fashioning evil against you and making a plan. Return, each of you, from his evil way; reform your ways and your deeds.	11 Ora, dunque, annunzia agli uomini di Giuda e agli abitanti di Gerusalemme: Così dice il Signore: Ecco, io sto preparando contro di voi una sventura e sto macchinando contro di voi un progetto. Ritorni ciascuno dalla sua strada malvagia, sicché possiate migliorare le vostre vie e le vostre azioni.
12 But they will say, "No use! We will follow our own devices; each one of us will behave according to the stubbornness of his evil heart!"	12 Ma ti diranno: "Impossibile! Noi cammineremo secondo i nostri progetti, ognuno agirà secondo la durezza del proprio cuore malvagio!".
13 Therefore thus says the LORD: Ask among the nations- who has ever heard the like? Truly horrible things has virgin Israel done!	13 "Perciò così dice il Signore: Cercate tra le nazioni chi ha udito cose simili; cosa orrenda ha commesso la vergine d'Israele!
14 Does the snow of Lebanon desert the rocky heights? Do the gushing waters dry up that flow fresh down the mountains?	14 Scompare, forse, dalla rupe imponente la neve del Libano? Ovvero si estingueranno le acque dei monti che scorrono fredde?
15 Yet my people have forgotten me: they burn incense to a thing that does not exist. They stumble out of their ways, the paths of old, To travel on bypaths, not the beaten track.	15 Eppure si dimenticò di me il mio popolo; al nulla offrirono incenso. Perciò hanno inciampato nelle loro vie, i sentieri di sempre, camminando per viottoli, per una strada non appianata,
16 Their land shall be turned into a desert, an object of lasting ridicule: All passers-by will be amazed, will shake their heads.	16 riducendo il loro paese a desolazione, a oggetto di scherno in perpetuo. Chiunque passerà per esso stupirà e scuoterà la propria testa.
17 Like the east wind, I will scatter them before their enemies; I will show them my back, not my face, in their day of disaster.	17 Qual vento orientale, io li disperderò di fronte al nemico. La schiena e non la faccia mostrerò loro nel giorno del loro disastro".
18 "Come," they said, "let us contrive a plot against Jeremiah. It will not mean the loss of instruction from the priests, nor of counsel from the wise, nor of messages from the prophets. And so, let us destroy him by his own tongue; let us carefully note his every word."	18 Ora quelli dissero: "Orsù, tramiamo insidie contro Geremia, perché non verrà meno l'ammaestramento al sacerdote né il consiglio ai saggi né la parola al profeta. Orsù, andiamo e colpiamolo con la lingua e non badiamo a tutte le sue parole".
19 Heed me, O LORD, and listen to what my adversaries say.	19 Bada tu a me, Signore, e ascolta la voce dei miei avversari.
20 Must good be repaid with evil that they should dig a pit to take my life? Remember that I stood before you to speak in their behalf, to turn away your wrath from them.	20 Si potrà, forse, retribuire il bene con il male? Eppure essi stanno scavando una fossa alla mia vita! Ricordati che io sto davanti a te, per annunziare loro il bene, per far indietreggiare la tua ira da loro.
21 So now, deliver their children to famine, do away with them by the sword. Let their wives be made childless and widows; let their men die of pestilence, their young men be slain by the sword in battle.	21 Perciò consegna i loro figli alla fame e abbattili a fil di spada; siano le loro donne sterili e vedove, i loro uomini siano feriti a morte, i loro giovani uccisi di spada in guerra.
22 May cries be heard from their homes, when suddenly you send plunderers against them. For they have dug a pit to capture me, they have hid snares for my feet;	22 Si oda gridare dalle loro case quando addurrai contro di loro i briganti all'improvviso; poiché hanno scavato una fossa per catturarmi e lacci hanno teso ai miei piedi.
23 But you, O LORD, know all their plans to slay me. Forgive not their crime, blot not out their sin in your sight! Let them go down before you, proceed against them in the time of your anger.	23 Ma tu, Signore, conosci tutti i loro disegni di morte contro di me. Non perdonare la loro iniquità e il loro peccato dal tuo cospetto non cancellarlo. Siano rovinati alla tua presenza, nel tempo della tua ira agisci contro di loro.
