Jeremiah 18

1 This word came to Jeremiah from the LORD:	1 Parola detta a Geremia dal Signore, che disse:
2 Rise up, be off to the potter's house; there I will give you my message.	2 Sorgi, e va a casa del vasaio, ed ivi udirai le mie parole.
3 I went down to the potter's house and there he was, working at the wheel.	3 Ed io andai a casa del vasaio, ed egli lavorava alla ruota.
4 Whenever the object of clay which he was making turned out badly in his hand, he tried again, making of the clay another object of whatever sort he pleased.	4 E il vaso, ch'egli faceva di creta, si sciolse nelle sue mani: e subitamente fece di quello un altro vaso della forma, che a lui parve.
5 Then the word of the Lord came to me:	5 E il Signore parlommi, dicendo:
6 Can I not do to you, house of Israel, as this potter has done? says the LORD. Indeed, like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, house of Israel.	6 Non potrò io forse fare a voi, casa d'Israele, come ha fatto questo vasaio, dice il Signore? Siccome la terra è in mano del vasaio, così voi, casa d'Israele, nella mano mia.
7 Sometimes I threaten to uproot and tear down and destroy a nation or a kingdom.	7 Io repentinamente minaccerò una nazione, ed un regno di sradicarlo, distruggerlo, ed annichilarlo.
8 But if that nation which I have threatened turns from its evil, I also repent of the evil which I threatened to do.	8 Se quella nazione farà penitenza del suo male, che io le rimproverai, mi ripentirò io pure del mal, che pensava di farle.
9 Sometimes, again, I promise to build up and plant a nation or a kingdom.	9 Repentinamente ancora parlerò io di felicitare, e fondare una nazione, od un regno.
10 But if that nation does what is evil in my eyes, refusing to obey my voice, I repent of the good with which I promised to bless it.	10 Se questa farà il male sugli occhi miei, e non udirà la mia voce, io mi ripentirò del bene, che avea detto di farle.
11 And now, tell this to the men of Judah and the citizens of Jerusalem: Thus says the LORD: Take care! I am fashioning evil against you and making a plan. Return, each of you, from his evil way; reform your ways and your deeds.	11 Tu dunque adesso dì agli uomini di Giuda, e agli abitatori di Gerusalemme: Queste cose dice il Signore: Ecco, che io vo formando per voi un male, ed ho de' pensieri contro di voi: si converta ognuno di voi dalla sua mala vita, raddirizzate le vostre vie, e le vostre inclinazioni.
12 But they will say, "No use! We will follow our own devices; each one of us will behave according to the stubbornness of his evil heart!"	12 Quelli hanno detto: Non abbiam più speranza: perocché anderem seguendo i nostri pensieri, e farem ciascheduno quel, che gli suggerisce la depravazione del cattivo suo cuore.
13 Therefore thus says the LORD: Ask among the nations- who has ever heard the like? Truly horrible things has virgin Israel done!	13 Quindi il Signore parla cosi: Domandate alle nazioni: chi mai udì cose tali, e sì orrende, quali purtroppo ha fatte la vergine d'Israele?
14 Does the snow of Lebanon desert the rocky heights? Do the gushing waters dry up that flow fresh down the mountains?	14 Può ella mancare la neve del Libano nei massi della pianura? o può ella esaurirsi la scaturigine di fresca acqua corrente?
15 Yet my people have forgotten me: they burn incense to a thing that does not exist. They stumble out of their ways, the paths of old, To travel on bypaths, not the beaten track.	15 Ma il popolo mio si è scordato di me, facendo libagioni alla vanità, e trovando inciampo nelle sue vie, nelle vie antiche, facendo per esse non piano, né facil viaggio.
16 Their land shall be turned into a desert, an object of lasting ridicule: All passers-by will be amazed, will shake their heads.	16 Per ridurre la loro terra in desolazione, ed in ischerno sempiterno: il passaggiero, che la vedrà, rimarrà stupefatto, e scuoterà la sua testa.
17 Like the east wind, I will scatter them before their enemies; I will show them my back, not my face, in their day of disaster.	17 Qual vento ardente io gli spergerò davanti al nemico: volgerò loro le spalle, e non la faccia nel dì della lor perdizione.
18 "Come," they said, "let us contrive a plot against Jeremiah. It will not mean the loss of instruction from the priests, nor of counsel from the wise, nor of messages from the prophets. And so, let us destroy him by his own tongue; let us carefully note his every word."	18 Ma quegli dissero: Venite; pensiam seriamente contro Geremia: perocché non resterà senza legge il sacerdote, senza consiglio il sapiente, senza parola il profeta: venite, trafiggiamolo colla lingua, e non badiamo a tutti, i suoi sermoni.
19 Heed me, O LORD, and listen to what my adversaries say.	19 Volgi, o Signore, lo sguardo verbo di me, e ascolta le voci de' miei avversari.
20 Must good be repaid with evil that they should dig a pit to take my life? Remember that I stood before you to speak in their behalf, to turn away your wrath from them.	20 Così adunque rendesi mal per bene, dappoiché costoro hanno scavata una fossa per la mia vita? Ricordati com'io mi presentava al tuo cospetto per parlarti a loro favore, e per allontanare da essi il tuo sdegno.
21 So now, deliver their children to famine, do away with them by the sword. Let their wives be made childless and widows; let their men die of pestilence, their young men be slain by the sword in battle.	21 Per questo abbandona tu i loro figli alla fame, e rimettili in balia della spada: le loro mogli si restino senza figli, e i loro mariti sian messi a morte: la gioventù sia trafitta dalla spada nella battaglia.
22 May cries be heard from their homes, when suddenly you send plunderers against them. For they have dug a pit to capture me, they have hid snares for my feet;	22 Le case loro rimbombino di clamori. Imperocché tu manderai sopra di loro improvvisamente il ladrone, perchè eglino han cavata la fossa per prendermi, ed han teso lacciuoli a' miei piedi.
23 But you, O LORD, know all their plans to slay me. Forgive not their crime, blot not out their sin in your sight! Let them go down before you, proceed against them in the time of your anger.	23 Ma a te, o Signore, noti sono tutti i loro mortali disegni contro di me. Non perdonare alle loro iniquità, non si cancelli dinanzi a te il loro peccato; rovinino per terra al tuo cospetto, nel tempo del tuo furare consumali.
