Jeremiah 18

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 This word came to Jeremiah from the LORD:	1 Palabra que llegó a Jeremías de parte del Señor, en estos términos:
2 Rise up, be off to the potter's house; there I will give you my message.	2 «Baja ahora mismo al taller del alfarero, y allí te haré oír mis palabras».
3 I went down to the potter's house and there he was, working at the wheel.	3 Yo bajé al taller del alfarero, mientras el trabajaba en el torno.
4 Whenever the object of clay which he was making turned out badly in his hand, he tried again, making of the clay another object of whatever sort he pleased.	4 Y cuando la vasija que estaba haciendo le salía mal, como suele pasar con la arcilla en manos del alfarero, él volvía a hacer otra, según le parecía mejor.
5 Then the word of the Lord came to me:	5 Entonces la palabra del Señor me llego en estos términos:
6 Can I not do to you, house of Israel, as this potter has done? says the LORD. Indeed, like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, house of Israel.	6 ¿No puedo yo tratarlos a ustedes, casa de Israel, como ese alfarero? –oráculo del Señor–. Sí, como la arcilla en la mano del alfarero, así están ustedes en mi mano, casa de Israel.
7 Sometimes I threaten to uproot and tear down and destroy a nation or a kingdom.	7 A veces yo hablo, con respecto a una nación o a un reino, de arrancar, derribar y perder;
8 But if that nation which I have threatened turns from its evil, I also repent of the evil which I threatened to do.	8 Pero la nación de la que hablé se convierte de su maldad, entonces me arrepiento del mal que había pensado infligirle.
9 Sometimes, again, I promise to build up and plant a nation or a kingdom.	9 Otras veces hablo, con respecto a una nación o a un reino, de edificar y plantar;
10 But if that nation does what is evil in my eyes, refusing to obey my voice, I repent of the good with which I promised to bless it.	10 pero si esa nación hace lo malo a mis ojos, sin escuchar mi voz, entonces me arrepiento del bien que había prometido hacerle.
11 And now, tell this to the men of Judah and the citizens of Jerusalem: Thus says the LORD: Take care! I am fashioning evil against you and making a plan. Return, each of you, from his evil way; reform your ways and your deeds.	11 Y ahora, habla en estos términos a los hombres de Judá y a los habitantes de Jerusalén: Así habla el Señor: Miren que yo fabrico contra ustedes una desgracia y medito contra ustedes un proyecto, Vuelvan de su mal camino, enmienden su conducta y sus acciones.
12 But they will say, "No use! We will follow our own devices; each one of us will behave according to the stubbornness of his evil heart!"	12 Pero ellos dirán: «¡Es inútil! Queremos seguir nuestros propios designios, obraremos cada uno según los impulsos de nuestro corazón obstinado y perverso».
13 Therefore thus says the LORD: Ask among the nations- who has ever heard the like? Truly horrible things has virgin Israel done!	13 Por eso, así habla el Señor: Pregunten entre las naciones: ¿Quién ha oído nada igual? Ha cometido la cosa más horrible la virgen de Israel,
14 Does the snow of Lebanon desert the rocky heights? Do the gushing waters dry up that flow fresh down the mountains?	14 ¿Abandona las cuestas rocosas la nieve del Líbano? ¿Se agotan las aguas de las montañas frescas y fluyentes?
15 Yet my people have forgotten me: they burn incense to a thing that does not exist. They stumble out of their ways, the paths of old, To travel on bypaths, not the beaten track.	15 ¡Mi pueblo, en cambio, se ha olvidado de mí! Ellos queman incienso a la Nada y han tropezado en sus caminos, en los senderos antiguos, para ir por sendas desviadas, por un camino sin trazar.
16 Their land shall be turned into a desert, an object of lasting ridicule: All passers-by will be amazed, will shake their heads.	16 Así han hecho de su país una devastación, un motivo de burla perpetua. Todo el que pase por allí se quedará pasmado y moverá la cabeza.
17 Like the east wind, I will scatter them before their enemies; I will show them my back, not my face, in their day of disaster.	17 Yo los dispersaré como el viento del este delante del enemigo: yo les mostraré la espalda, no el rostro, en el día de su ruina.
18 "Come," they said, "let us contrive a plot against Jeremiah. It will not mean the loss of instruction from the priests, nor of counsel from the wise, nor of messages from the prophets. And so, let us destroy him by his own tongue; let us carefully note his every word."	18 Ellos dijeron: «¡Vengan, tramemos un plan contra Jeremías, porque no le faltará la instrucción al sacerdote, ni el consejo al sabio, ni la palabra al profeta! Vengan, inventemos algún cargo contra él, y no prestemos atención a sus palabras».
19 Heed me, O LORD, and listen to what my adversaries say.	19 ¡Préstame atención, Señor, y oye la voz de los que me acusan!
20 Must good be repaid with evil that they should dig a pit to take my life? Remember that I stood before you to speak in their behalf, to turn away your wrath from them.	20 ¿Acaso se devuelve mal por bien para que me hayan cavado una fosa? Recuerda que yo me presenté delante de ti para hablar en favor de ellos, para apartar de ellos tu furor.
21 So now, deliver their children to famine, do away with them by the sword. Let their wives be made childless and widows; let their men die of pestilence, their young men be slain by the sword in battle.	21 Por eso, entrega sus hijos al hambre y déjalos a merced de la espada. ¡Que sus mujeres se queden sin hijos y sin marido, que sus hombres mueran víctimas de la peste, que sus jóvenes caigan bajo la espada en el combate!
22 May cries be heard from their homes, when suddenly you send plunderers against them. For they have dug a pit to capture me, they have hid snares for my feet;	22 ¡Que se oiga el clamor que sale de sus casas, cuando mandes de repente salteadores contra ellos! Porque han cavado una fosa para atraparme y han ocultado trampas bajo mis pies.
23 But you, O LORD, know all their plans to slay me. Forgive not their crime, blot not out their sin in your sight! Let them go down before you, proceed against them in the time of your anger.	23 Pero tú, Señor, conoces bien sus planes asesinos contra mí. ¡No les perdones su iniquidad, que su pecado no se borre de tu vista! ¡Que tropiecen delante de ti, y en el tiempo de tu ira, obra contra ellos!
