Jeremiah 18

1 This word came to Jeremiah from the LORD:	1 LA parola che fu dal Signore indirizzata a Geremia, dicendo:
2 Rise up, be off to the potter's house; there I will give you my message.	2 Levati, e scendi in casa di un vasellaio, e quivi ti farò intender le mie parole.
3 I went down to the potter's house and there he was, working at the wheel.	3 Io adunque scesi in casa di un vasellaio, ed ecco, egli faceva il suo lavorio in su la ruota.
4 Whenever the object of clay which he was making turned out badly in his hand, he tried again, making of the clay another object of whatever sort he pleased.	4 E il vasello ch’egli faceva si guastò, come l’argilla suol guastarsi in man del vasellaio; ed egli da capo ne fece un altro vasello, come a lui vasellaio parve bene di fare.
5 Then the word of the Lord came to me:	5 Allora la parola del Signore mi fu indirizzata dicendo:
6 Can I not do to you, house of Israel, as this potter has done? says the LORD. Indeed, like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, house of Israel.	6 Non posso io fare a voi, o casa d’Israele, come ha fatto questo vasellaio? dice il Signore; ecco, siccome l’argilla è in man del vasellaio, così voi, o casa d’Israele, siete in mano mia.
7 Sometimes I threaten to uproot and tear down and destroy a nation or a kingdom.	7 In uno stante io parlerò contro ad una nazione, o contro ad un regno, per divellere, per diroccare, e per distruggere.
8 But if that nation which I have threatened turns from its evil, I also repent of the evil which I threatened to do.	8 Ma se quella nazione, contro alla quale io avrò parlato, si converte dalla sua malvagità, io altresì mi pentirò del male che io avea pensato di farle.
9 Sometimes, again, I promise to build up and plant a nation or a kingdom.	9 In uno stante parimente, parlerò in favore di una nazione, o di un regno, per piantare, e per edificare.
10 But if that nation does what is evil in my eyes, refusing to obey my voice, I repent of the good with which I promised to bless it.	10 Ma se quel regno, o nazione fa quel che mi dispiace, non ascoltando la mia voce, io altresì mi pentirò del bene che io avea detto di fargli
11 And now, tell this to the men of Judah and the citizens of Jerusalem: Thus says the LORD: Take care! I am fashioning evil against you and making a plan. Return, each of you, from his evil way; reform your ways and your deeds.	11 Ora dunque, parla pure agli uomini di Giuda, ed agli abitanti di Gerusalemme, dicendo: Così ha detto il Signore: Ecco, io formo contro a voi del male, e penso de’ pensieri contro a voi; convertasi ora ciascun di voi dalla sua via malvagia, ed ammendate le vostre vie, ed i vostri fatti.
12 But they will say, "No use! We will follow our own devices; each one of us will behave according to the stubbornness of his evil heart!"	12 Ed essi dissero: Non vi è rimedio; perciocchè noi andremo dietro a’ nostri pensieri, e faremo ciascuno secondo la durezza del cuor suo malvagio.
13 Therefore thus says the LORD: Ask among the nations- who has ever heard the like? Truly horrible things has virgin Israel done!	13 Perciò, così ha detto il Signore: Deh! domandate fra le genti; chi ha mai udite cotali cose? la vergine d’Israele ha fatta una cosa molto brutta.
14 Does the snow of Lebanon desert the rocky heights? Do the gushing waters dry up that flow fresh down the mountains?	14 Lascerebbesi per lo sasso di un campo il nevoso Libano? abbandonerebbersi le acque pellegrine, fresche, e correnti?
15 Yet my people have forgotten me: they burn incense to a thing that does not exist. They stumble out of their ways, the paths of old, To travel on bypaths, not the beaten track.	15 Conciossiachè il mio popolo mi abbia dimenticato, ed abbia fatti profumi a ciò che non è che vanità; e sia stato fatto intopparsi nelle sue vie, ch’erano sentieri antichi, per camminar per li sentieri di un cammino non appianato;
16 Their land shall be turned into a desert, an object of lasting ridicule: All passers-by will be amazed, will shake their heads.	16 per mettere il lor paese in desolazione, e in zufolo, in perpetuo; onde chiunque passerà per esso stupirà, e scoterà la testa.
17 Like the east wind, I will scatter them before their enemies; I will show them my back, not my face, in their day of disaster.	17 Io li dispergerò dinanzi al nemico, a guisa di vento orientale; io mostrerò loro la coppa, e non la faccia, nel giorno della lor calamità
18 "Come," they said, "let us contrive a plot against Jeremiah. It will not mean the loss of instruction from the priests, nor of counsel from the wise, nor of messages from the prophets. And so, let us destroy him by his own tongue; let us carefully note his every word."	18 Ed essi hanno detto: Venite, e facciamo delle macchinazioni contro a Geremia; perciocchè la Legge non verrà giammai meno dal sacerdote, nè il consiglio dal savio, nè la parola dal profeta; venite, e percotiamolo con la lingua e non attendiamo a tutte le sue parole.
19 Heed me, O LORD, and listen to what my adversaries say.	19 O Signore, attendi a me, ed ascolta la voce di quelli che contendono meco.
20 Must good be repaid with evil that they should dig a pit to take my life? Remember that I stood before you to speak in their behalf, to turn away your wrath from them.	20 Devesi rendere mal per bene? conciossiachè essi abbiano cavata una fossa all’anima mia. Ricordati che io mi son presentato dinanzi a te, per parlare in favor loro, per istornar l’ira tua da loro.
21 So now, deliver their children to famine, do away with them by the sword. Let their wives be made childless and widows; let their men die of pestilence, their young men be slain by the sword in battle.	21 Perciò, abbandona i lor figliuoli alla fame, e falli cader per la spada; e sieno le lor mogli orbate di figliuoli, e vedove; e sieno i loro uomini uccisi, e morti; e sieno i lor giovani percossi dalla spada nella battaglia.
22 May cries be heard from their homes, when suddenly you send plunderers against them. For they have dug a pit to capture me, they have hid snares for my feet;	22 Sieno udite le strida dalle case loro, quando in uno stante tu avrai fatte venir sopra loro delle schiere; perciocchè hanno cavata una fossa, per prendermi; ed hanno di nascosto tesi de’ lacci a’ miei piedi.
23 But you, O LORD, know all their plans to slay me. Forgive not their crime, blot not out their sin in your sight! Let them go down before you, proceed against them in the time of your anger.	23 Ma tu, o Signore, conosci tutto il lor consiglio contro a me, che è di farmi morire; non fare il purgamento della loro iniquità, e non iscancellare il lor peccato dal tuo cospetto; anzi sieno traboccati davanti a te; opera contro a loro nel tempo della tua ira
