Wisdom sings her own praises, before her own people she proclaims her glory; | 1 Laus sapientiae. Sapientia laudabit animam suam et in Deo honorabitur et in medio populi sui gloriabitur |
In the assembly of the Most High she opens her mouth, in the presence of his hosts she declares her worth: | 2 et in ecclesia Altissimi aperiet os suum et in conspectu virtutis illius gloriabitur |
"From the mouth of the Most High I came forth, and mistlike covered the earth. | 3 et in medio populi sui exaltabitur et in plenitudine sancta admirabitur |
In the highest heavens did I dwell, my throne on a pillar of cloud.
The vault of heaven I compassed alone, through the deep abyss I wandered. | 5 “ Ego ex ore Altissimi prodivi, primogenita ante omnem creaturam. |
Over waves of the sea, over all the land, over every people and nation I held sway. | 6 Ego feci in caelis, ut oriretur lumen indeficiens, et sicut nebula texi omnem terram. |
Among all these I sought a resting place; in whose inheritance should I abide? | 7 Ego in altissimis habitavi, et thronus meus in columna nubis. |
"Then the Creator of all gave me his command, and he who formed me chose the spot for my tent, Saying, 'In Jacob make your dwelling, in Israel your inheritance.' | 8 Gyrum caeli circuivi sola et in profundum abyssi ambulavi, |
Before all ages, in the beginning, he created me, and through all ages I shall not cease to be. | 9 in fluctibus maris et in omni terra steti |
In the holy tent I ministered before him, and in Zion I fixed my abode. | 10 et in omni populo et in omni gente primatum habui |
Thus in the chosen city he has given me rest, in Jerusalem is my domain. | 11 et omnium excellentium et humilium corda virtute calcavi. In his omnibus requiem quaesivi: cuius in hereditate morabor? |
I have struck root among the glorious people, in the portion of the LORD, his heritage.
"Like a cedar on Lebanon I am raised aloft, like a cypress on Mount Hermon, | 13 et dixit mihi: “In Iacob inhabita et in Israel hereditare et in electis meis mitte radices”. |
Like a palm tree in En-gedi, like a rosebush in Jericho, Like a fair olive tree in the field, like a plane tree growing beside the water. |
Like cinnamon, or fragrant balm, or precious myrrh, I give forth perfume; Like galbanum and onycha and sweet spices, like the odor of incense in the holy place. | 15 Et in tabernaculo sancto coram ipso ministravi, et sic in Sion firmata sum et in civitate similiter dilecta requievi, et in Ierusalem potestas mea. |
I spread out my branches like a terebinth, my branches so bright and so graceful. | 16 Et radicavi in populo honorificato et in parte Domini, in hereditate illius, et in plenitudine sanctorum detentio mea. |
I bud forth delights like the vine, my blossoms become fruit fair and rich. | 17 Quasi cedrus exaltata sum in Libano, et quasi cupressus in montibus Hermon. |
Come to me, all you that yearn for me, and be filled with my fruits; | 18 Quasi palma exaltata sum in Engaddi, et quasi plantatio rosae in Iericho. |
You will remember me as sweeter than honey, better to have than the honeycomb. | 19 Quasi oliva speciosa in campis, et quasi platanus exaltata sum iuxta aquam in plateis. |
He who eats of me will hunger still, he who drinks of me will thirst for more; | 20 Sicut cinnamomum et balsamum aromatizans odorem dedi; quasi myrrha electa dedi suavitatem odoris. |
He who obeys me will not be put to shame, he who serves me will never fail." | 21 Et quasi storax et galbanus et ungula et gutta, et quasi libani vapor in tabernaculo. |
All this is true of the book of the Most High's covenant, the law which Moses commanded us as an inheritance for the community of Jacob. | 22 Ego quasi terebinthus extendi ramos meos, et rami mei rami honoris et gratiae. |
It overflows, like the Pishon, with wisdom-- like the Tigris in the days of the new fruits. | 23 Ego quasi vitis germinavi gratiam, et flores mei fructus honoris et honestatis. |
It runs over, like the Euphrates, with understanding, like the Jordan at harvest time. | 24 Ego mater pulchrae dilectionis et timoris et agnitionis et sanctae spei. |
It sparkles like the Nile with knowledge, like the Gihon at vintage time. | 25 In me gratia omnis viae et veritatis, in me omnis spes vitae et virtutis. |
The first man never finished comprehending wisdom, nor will the last succeed in fathoming her. | 26 Transite ad me, omnes, qui concupiscitis me, et a generationibus meis implemini. |
For deeper than the sea are her thoughts; her counsels, than the great abyss.
Now I, like a rivulet from her stream, channeling the waters into a garden, | 28 memoria mea in generationes saeculorum. |
Said to myself, "I will water my plants, my flower bed I will drench"; And suddenly this rivulet of mine became a river, then this stream of mine, a sea. | 29 Qui edunt me, adhuc esurient; et, qui bibunt me, adhuc sitient. |
Thus do I send my teachings forth shining like the dawn, to become known afar off. | 30 Qui audit me, non confundetur; et, qui operantur in me, non peccabunt: |
Thus do I pour out instruction like prophecy and bestow it on generations to come. | 31 qui elucidant me, vitam aeternam habebunt ”. |
Haec omnia liber testamenti Altissimi,
Ego sapientia effudi flumina,
Penetrabo omnes inferiores partes terrae et inspiciam omnes dormientes et illuminabo omnes sperantes in Domino;
