Sirach 13

1 He who touches pitch blackens his hand; he who associates with an impious man learns his ways.	1 Chi maneggia la pece si sporca, chi frequenta il superbo diviene simile a lui.
2 Bear no burden too heavy for you; go with no one greater or wealthier than yourself. How can the earthen pot go with the metal cauldron? When they knock together, the pot will be smashed:	2 Non portare un peso troppo grave per te, non associarti a uno più forte e più ricco di te. Perché accostare una brocca alla pentola? Se questa cozza, l’altra si spezza.
3 The rich man does wrong and boasts of it, the poor man is wronged and begs forgiveness.	3 Il ricco commette ingiustizia e per di più grida forte, il povero subisce ingiustizia e per di più deve scusarsi.
4 As long as the rich man can use you he will enslave you, but when you are exhausted, he will abandon you.	4 Se gli sei utile, si approfitta di te; se hai bisogno, ti abbandonerà.
5 As long as you have anything he will speak fair words to you, and with smiles he will win your confidence;	5 Se possiedi, starà con te, e ti impoverisce senza alcun rimorso.
6 When he needs something from you he will cajole you, then without regret he will impoverish you.	6 Se ha bisogno di te, ti imbroglierà, ti sorriderà e ti farà sperare, ti rivolgerà belle parole e chiederà: «Di che cosa hai bisogno?».
7 While it serves his purpose he will beguile you, then twice or three times he will terrify you; When later he sees you he will pass you by, and shake his head over you.	7 Con i suoi banchetti ti farà vergognare, finché non ti avrà spremuto due o tre volte tanto. Alla fine ti deriderà, poi vedendoti ti eviterà e scuoterà il suo capo davanti a te.
8 Guard against being presumptuous; be not as those who lack sense.	8 Sta’ attento a non lasciarti imbrogliare e a non farti umiliare per la tua stoltezza.
9 When invited by a man of influence, keep your distance; then he will urge you all the more.	9 Quando un potente ti chiama, allontànati, ed egli insisterà nel chiamarti.
10 Be not bold with him lest you be rebuffed, but keep not too far away lest you be forgotten.	10 Non essere invadente per non essere respinto, non stare appartato per non essere dimenticato.
11 Engage not freely in discussion with him, trust not his many words; For by prolonged talk he will test you, and though smiling he will probe you.	11 Non credere di trattare alla pari con lui e non dare credito alle sue chiacchiere, perché parla molto per metterti alla prova e anche sorridendo indagherà su di te.
12 Mercilessly he will make of you a laughingstock, and will not refrain from injury or chains.	12 Non ha pietà chi non mantiene la parola, non ti risparmierà maltrattamenti e catene.
13 Be on your guard and take care never to accompany men of violence.	13 Guàrdati e sta’ molto attento, perché cammini sull’orlo del precipizio.
14 Every living thing loves its own kind, every man a man like himself.	14 Quando ascolti queste cose nel sonno, svégliati: per tutta la tua vita ama il Signore e invocalo per la tua salvezza.
15 Every being is drawn to its own kind; with his own kind every man associates.	15 Ogni vivente ama il suo simile e ogni uomo il suo vicino.
16 Is a wolf ever allied with a lamb? So it is with the sinner and the just.	16 Ogni essere si accoppia secondo la sua specie, l’uomo si associa a chi gli è simile.
17 Can there be peace between the hyena and the dog? Or between the rich and the poor can there be peace?	17 Che cosa può esserci in comune tra il lupo e l’agnello? Così tra il peccatore e il giusto.
18 Lion's prey are the wild asses of the desert; so too the poor are feeding grounds for the rich.	18 Quale pace può esservi fra la iena e il cane? Quale intesa tra il ricco e il povero?
19 A proud man abhors lowliness; so does the rich man abhor the poor.	19 Sono preda dei leoni gli asini selvatici nel deserto, così pascolo dei ricchi sono i poveri.
20 When a rich man stumbles he is supported by a friend; when a poor man trips he is pushed down by a friend.	20 Per il superbo l’umiltà è obbrobrio, così per il ricco è obbrobrio il povero.
21 Many are the supporters for a rich man when he speaks; though what he says is odious, it wins approval. When a poor man speaks they make sport of him; he speaks wisely and no attention is paid him.	21 Se il ricco vacilla, è sostenuto dagli amici, ma l’umile che cade è respinto dagli amici.
22 A rich man speaks and all are silent, his wisdom they extol to the clouds. A poor man speaks and they say: "Who is that?" If he slips they cast him down.	22 Il ricco che sbaglia ha molti difensori; se dice sciocchezze, lo scusano. Se sbaglia l’umile, lo si rimprovera; anche se dice cose sagge, non ci si bada.
23 Wealth is good when there is no sin; but poverty is evil by the standards of the proud.	23 Parla il ricco, tutti tacciono e portano alle stelle il suo discorso. Parla il povero e dicono: «Chi è costui?»; se inciampa, l’aiutano a cadere.
24 The heart of a man changes his countenance, either for good or for evil.	24 Buona è la ricchezza, se è senza peccato; la povertà è cattiva sulla bocca dell’empio.
25 The sign of a good heart is a cheerful countenance; withdrawn and perplexed is the laborious schemer.	25 Il cuore di un uomo cambia il suo volto sia in bene sia in male.
	26 Segno di buon cuore è un volto sereno, ma trovare dei proverbi è un lavoro faticoso.
