Sirach 13

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 He who touches pitch blackens his hand; he who associates with an impious man learns his ways.	1 El que toca el betún se queda manchado, y el que trata con el orgulloso se vuelve igual a él.
2 Bear no burden too heavy for you; go with no one greater or wealthier than yourself. How can the earthen pot go with the metal cauldron? When they knock together, the pot will be smashed:	2 No levantes una carga demasiado pesada, ni trates con uno más fuerte y más rico que tú: ¿puede el vaso de arcilla juntarse con la olla? Esta lo golpeará y aquel se romperá.
3 The rich man does wrong and boasts of it, the poor man is wronged and begs forgiveness.	3 El rico agravia, y encima se envalentona; el pobre es agraviado, y encima pide disculpas.
4 As long as the rich man can use you he will enslave you, but when you are exhausted, he will abandon you.	4 Mientras le seas útil, te explotará, pero si no tienes nada, te abandonará.
5 As long as you have anything he will speak fair words to you, and with smiles he will win your confidence;	5 Si posees algo, vivirá contigo y te despojará sin lástima.
6 When he needs something from you he will cajole you, then without regret he will impoverish you.	6 Cuando te necesite, tratará de engañarte, te sonreirá y te dará esperanzas; te dirigirá hermosas palabras y te preguntará: «¿Qué te hace falta?».
7 While it serves his purpose he will beguile you, then twice or three times he will terrify you; When later he sees you he will pass you by, and shake his head over you.	7 Te comprometerá con sus festejos hasta despojarte dos y tres veces, y al final se burlará de ti; después, cuando te vez, pasará de largo y meneará la cabeza delante de ti.
8 Guard against being presumptuous; be not as those who lack sense.	8 Presta atención, para no dejarte engañar ni ser humillado por tu insensatez.
9 When invited by a man of influence, keep your distance; then he will urge you all the more.	9 Cuando te invite un poderoso, quédate a distancia, y te invitará con más insistencia.
10 Be not bold with him lest you be rebuffed, but keep not too far away lest you be forgotten.	10 No te precipites, para no ser rechazado, ni te quedes muy lejos, para no ser olvidado.
11 Engage not freely in discussion with him, trust not his many words; For by prolonged talk he will test you, and though smiling he will probe you.	11 No pretendas hablarle de igual a igual ni te fíes si conversa demasiado: él te pone a prueba con su locuacidad y te examina entre risa y risa.
12 Mercilessly he will make of you a laughingstock, and will not refrain from injury or chains.	12 El que no se modera al hablar, es un despiadado, y no te ahorrará ni los golpes ni las cadenas.
13 Be on your guard and take care never to accompany men of violence.	13 Observa bien y presta mucha atención, porque estás caminando al borde de tu ruina.
14 Every living thing loves its own kind, every man a man like himself.	14 [Cuando oigas esto en tu sueño, despiértate; ama al Señor toda tu vida e invócalo para tu salvación.]
15 Every being is drawn to its own kind; with his own kind every man associates.	15 Todo animal quiere a su semejante y todo hombre, al de su misma condición;
16 Is a wolf ever allied with a lamb? So it is with the sinner and the just.	16 todo ser viviente se une a los de su especie y el hombre, a uno semejante a él.
17 Can there be peace between the hyena and the dog? Or between the rich and the poor can there be peace?	17 ¿Qué tienen de común el lobo y el cordero? Así pasa con el pecador y el hombre bueno.
18 Lion's prey are the wild asses of the desert; so too the poor are feeding grounds for the rich.	18 ¿Qué paz puede haber entre la hiena y el perro? ¿Y qué paz entre el rico y el pobre?
19 A proud man abhors lowliness; so does the rich man abhor the poor.	19 Los asnos salvajes en el desierto son presa de los leones: así los pobres son pasto de los ricos.
20 When a rich man stumbles he is supported by a friend; when a poor man trips he is pushed down by a friend.	20 La humillación es abominable para el soberbio: así el rico abomina del pobre.
21 Many are the supporters for a rich man when he speaks; though what he says is odious, it wins approval. When a poor man speaks they make sport of him; he speaks wisely and no attention is paid him.	21 Cuando un rico da un mal paso, sus amigos lo sostienen; cuando un pobre cae, sus amigos lo rechazan.
22 A rich man speaks and all are silent, his wisdom they extol to the clouds. A poor man speaks and they say: "Who is that?" If he slips they cast him down.	22 Si un rico resbala, muchos corren en su ayuda; dice cosas irrepetibles, y le dan la razón. Resbala el humilde, y lo critican; se expresa con sensatez, y nadie le hace caso.
23 Wealth is good when there is no sin; but poverty is evil by the standards of the proud.	23 Si el rico habla, todos se callan y ponen sus palabras por las nubes; habla el pobre, y preguntan: «¿Quién es este?», y si tropieza, le dan un empujón.
24 The heart of a man changes his countenance, either for good or for evil.	24 Buena es la riqueza, si está libre de pecado, y mala es la pobreza a juicio del impío.
25 The sign of a good heart is a cheerful countenance; withdrawn and perplexed is the laborious schemer.	25 El corazón de un hombre lo hace cambiar de semblante, tanto para bien como para mal:
	26 un rostro alegre refleja la dicha del corazón, y la invención de proverbios exige penosas reflexiones.
