Sirach 13

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	BIBLIA
1 He who touches pitch blackens his hand; he who associates with an impious man learns his ways.	1 El que toca la pez, se mancha, el que convive con el orgulloso, se hará como él.
2 Bear no burden too heavy for you; go with no one greater or wealthier than yourself. How can the earthen pot go with the metal cauldron? When they knock together, the pot will be smashed:	2 No tomes sobre ti carga pesada, con el más fuerte y rico que tú no convivas. ¿Por qué juntar cántaro con caldero? Este le chocará y aquél se romperá.
3 The rich man does wrong and boasts of it, the poor man is wronged and begs forgiveness.	3 El rico agravia y encima se envalentona, el pobre es agraviado y encima ha de excusarse.
4 As long as the rich man can use you he will enslave you, but when you are exhausted, he will abandon you.	4 Si le eres útil, se servirá de ti, si eres torpe, te abandonará.
5 As long as you have anything he will speak fair words to you, and with smiles he will win your confidence;	5 Si tienes algo, vivirá contigo, y te despojará sin fatigarse él.
6 When he needs something from you he will cajole you, then without regret he will impoverish you.	6 ¿Ha menester de ti? Tratará de engañarte, te sonreirá y te dará esperanzas; buenas palabras te dará y dirá: «¿Qué te hace falta?»
7 While it serves his purpose he will beguile you, then twice or three times he will terrify you; When later he sees you he will pass you by, and shake his head over you.	7 Te avergonzará en sus festines, hasta despojarte dos, tres veces, y para terminar se burlará de ti. Después, si te ve, te dejará a un lado, y meneará la cabeza ante ti.
8 Guard against being presumptuous; be not as those who lack sense.	8 Guárdate de dejarte engañar, y de ser humillado por estúpido.
9 When invited by a man of influence, keep your distance; then he will urge you all the more.	9 Cuando te llame un poderoso, quédate a distancia, que tanto más te llamará.
10 Be not bold with him lest you be rebuffed, but keep not too far away lest you be forgotten.	10 No te presentes por ti mismo, no sea que te rechace, ni te quedes muy lejos, para no pasar inadvertido.
11 Engage not freely in discussion with him, trust not his many words; For by prolonged talk he will test you, and though smiling he will probe you.	11 No pretendas hablar con él de igual a igual, ni te fíes de sus muchas palabras. Que con su mucho hablar te pondrá a prueba, como quien pasa el rato, te examinará.
12 Mercilessly he will make of you a laughingstock, and will not refrain from injury or chains.	12 Despiadado es quien no guarda tus palabras, no te ahorrará ni golpes ni cadenas.
13 Be on your guard and take care never to accompany men of violence.	13 Observa y ponte bien en guardia, porque caminas junto a tu propia ruina.
14 Every living thing loves its own kind, every man a man like himself.
15 Every being is drawn to its own kind; with his own kind every man associates.	15 Todo viviente ama a su semejante, y todo hombre a su prójimo.
16 Is a wolf ever allied with a lamb? So it is with the sinner and the just.	16 Todo animal según su especie se une, a su semejante se adhiere el hombre.
17 Can there be peace between the hyena and the dog? Or between the rich and the poor can there be peace?	17 ¿Cómo podrá convivir lobo con cordero? Así el pecador con el piadoso.
18 Lion's prey are the wild asses of the desert; so too the poor are feeding grounds for the rich.	18 ¿Qué paz puede tener la hiena con el perro? ¿qué paz el rico con el indigente?
19 A proud man abhors lowliness; so does the rich man abhor the poor.	19 Caza de leones son los onagros en el desierto, así los pobres son presa de los ricos.
20 When a rich man stumbles he is supported by a friend; when a poor man trips he is pushed down by a friend.	20 Abonimación para el orgulloso es la humilidad, así para el rico es abominación el pobre.
21 Many are the supporters for a rich man when he speaks; though what he says is odious, it wins approval. When a poor man speaks they make sport of him; he speaks wisely and no attention is paid him.	21 El rico que vacila es sostenido por sus amigos, al humilde que cae sus amigos le rechazan.
22 A rich man speaks and all are silent, his wisdom they extol to the clouds. A poor man speaks and they say: "Who is that?" If he slips they cast him down.	22 Cuando el rico resbala, muchos le toman en sus brazos, dice estupideces, y le justifican; resbala el humilde, y se le hacen reproches, dice cosas sensatas, y no se le hace caso.
23 Wealth is good when there is no sin; but poverty is evil by the standards of the proud.	23 Habla el rico, y todos se callan, y exaltan su palabra hasta las nubes. Habla el pobre y dicen: «¿Quién es éste?» y si se equivoca, se le echa por tierra.
24 The heart of a man changes his countenance, either for good or for evil.	24 Buena es la riqueza en la que no hay pecado, mala la pobreza al decir del impío.
25 The sign of a good heart is a cheerful countenance; withdrawn and perplexed is the laborious schemer.	25 El corazón del hombre modela su rostro tanto hacia el bien como hacia el mal.
