1 More weighty than wisdom or wealth is a little folly!	1 - Le mosche morte corrompono l'aroma dell'unguento:[così] più che la sapienza e la gloria ha peso un po' di follia.
2 The wise man's understanding turns him to his right; the fool's understanding turns him to his left.	2 Il cuor del savio è alla sua destrae il cuor dello stolto alla sua sinistra.
3 When the fool walks through the street, in his lack of understanding he calls everything foolish.	3 E quando lo stolto cammina per via, essendo egli uno sciocco, tutti reputa stolti.
4 Should the anger of the ruler burst upon you, forsake not your place; for mildness abates great offenses.	4 Se l'animo del potente si leva contro di te, non abbandonare il tuo posto; giacchè il rimedio [della calma] fa cessare le più grandi colpe.
5 I have seen under the sun another evil, like a mistake that proceeds from the ruler:	5 C'è un male, ch'io vidi sotto il sole, derivante, qual errore, da chi governa:
6 a fool put in lofty position while the rich sit in lowly places.	6 lo stolto [cioè] posto nella dignità più altae i nobili confinati in basso.
7 I have seen slaves on horseback, while princes walked on the ground like slaves.	7 Vidi schiavi a cavallo, e principi andare a piedi come schiavi.
8 He who digs a pit may fall into it, and he who breaks through a wall may be bitten by a serpent.	8 Chi scava una fossa, ci cadrà dentro, e chi abbatte una siepe, lo morderà una serpe.
9 He who moves stones may be hurt by them, and he who chops wood is in danger from it.	9 Chi smuove sassi ne sarà colpito, e chi spacca le legna, corre rischio d'esserne ferito.
10 If the iron becomes dull, though at first he made easy progress, he must increase his efforts; but the craftsman has the advantage of his skill.	10 Se spuntato è il ferro, e non è più come prima, ma ha perduto il taglio, molta fatica ci vuole ad affilarlo;[così] frutto d'industre lavoro è la sapienza.
11 If the serpent bites because it has not been charmed, then there is no advantage for the charmer.	11 Se il serpe morde in silenzio, non è da meno di esso chi sparla in segreto.
12 Words from the wise man's mouth win favor, but the fool's lips consume him.	12 Le parole della bocca del savio son [piene di] grazia; le labbra dello stolto lo mandano in rovina:
13 The beginning of his words is folly, and the end of his talk is utter madness;	13 il principio delle sue parole è stoltezza, e la fine del suo parlare, perniciosa follia.
14 yet the fool multiplies words. Man knows not what is to come, for who can tell him what is to come after him?	14 Lo stolto moltiplica le parole, mentre l'uomo ignora quel che fu prima di lui, e chi mai potrebbe indicargli ciò che avverrà dopo?
15 When will the fool be weary of his labor, he who knows not the way to the city?	15 Il travagliarsi degli stolti gli stanca [vanamente], giacchè non sanno [neppure] andare in città!
16 Woe to you, O land, whose king was a servant, and whose princes dine in the morning!	16 Guai a te, o paese, che hai per re un fanciullo, e i cui principi si rimpinzano [sin] dal mattino.
17 Blessed are you, O land, whose king is of noble birth, and whose princes dine at the right time (for vigor and not in drinking bouts).	17 Beato il paese, il cui re è nobile, e i cui principi mangiano a tempo debito, per ristorar le forze e non per gozzoviglia.
18 When hands are lazy, the rafters sag; when hands are slack, the house leaks.	18 Per via della pigrizia precipiterà il soffitto, e per l'inerzia delle mani farà acqua la casa.
19 Bread and oil call forth merriment and wine makes the living glad, but money answers for everything.	19 A sollazzo banchettan [gli stolti], e del vino [abusano] per crapulare in vita: tutto obbedisce al danaro.
20 Even in your thoughts do not make light of the king, nor in the privacy of your bedroom revile the rich. Because the birds of the air may carry your voice, a winged creature may tell what you say.	20 [Neppur] col pensiero non sparlare del re, e [neppur] nel segreto di tua stanza non dir male del ricco: perchè gli ucccelli del cielo trasporteran la tua voce, e i volatili riferiran le tue parole.
