1 Antiochus, son of King Demetrius, sent a letter from the islands of the sea to Simon, the priest and ethnarch of the Jews, and to all the nation,	1 Antioco, figlio del re Demetrio, inviò dalle isole del mare una lettera a Simone, sacerdote ed etnarca dei Giudei, e a tutta la nazione.
2 which read as follows: "King Antiochus sends greetings to Simon, the priest and ethnarch, and to the Jewish nation.	2 Essa era così concepita: "Il re Antioco a Simone, sacerdote grande ed etnarca, e alla nazione dei Giudei, salute!
3 Whereas certain villains have gained control of the kingdom of my ancestors, I intend to reclaim it, that I may restore it to its former state. I have recruited a large number of mercenary troops and equipped warships	3 Poiché uomini infami si sono impadroniti del regno dei padri miei, ora io voglio rivendicare tale regno in modo da riordinarlo com'era prima. 10 In the year one hundred and seventy-four Antiochus invaded the land of his ancestors, and all the troops rallied to him, so that few were left with Trypho.	10 L'anno 174 Antioco partì per la terra dei suoi padri e tutte le truppe si unirono a lui, di modo che solo poche restarono con Trifone.

14 While he invested the city, his ships closed in along the coast, so that he blockaded it by land and sea and let no one go in or out.	14 Circondò la città, mentre le navi l'attaccavano dal mare; così, stringendo la città dalla terra e dal mare, non permetteva a nessuno di uscire o di entrare.

17 Certain envoys of the Jews, our friends and allies, have come to us to renew their earlier alliance of friendship. 19 Therefore we have decided to write to various kings and countries, that they are not to harm them, or wage war against them or their cities or their country, and are not to assist those who fight against them.	19 Ci piacque perciò di scrivere ai re e alle regioni di non far loro alcun male né di combattere contro di loro, contro le loro città e contro la loro regione, né di allearsi con quelli che combattono contro di essi.

23 to all the countries--Sampsames, Sparta, Delos, Myndos, Sicyon, Caria, Samos, Pamphylia, Lycia, Halicarnassus, Rhodes, Phaselis, Cos, Side, Aradus, Gortyna, Cnidus, Cyprus, and Cyrene.	23 e a tutte le regioni: a Sampsame, agli Spartani, a Delo, a Mindo, a Sicione, alla Caria, a Samo, alla Panfilia, alla Licia, ad Alicarnasso, a Rodi, a Faselide, a Coo, a Side, ad Arado, a Gortina, a Cnido, a Cipro e a Cirene.
24 A copy of the letter was also sent to Simon the high priest.	24 Una copia la scrissero anche per il sommo sacerdote Simone.
25 When King Antiochus was encamped before Dor, he assaulted it continuously both with troops and with the siege machines he had made. He blockaded Trypho by preventing anyone from going in or out.	25 Il re Antioco, dunque, stava accampato davanti a Dora, nella parte nuova, spingendo continuamente contro di essa le schiere e costruendo delle macchine. 28 He sent Athenobius, one of his Friends, to confer with Simon and say: "You are occupying Joppa and Gazara and the citadel of Jerusalem; these are cities of my kingdom.	28 Gli inviò poi Atenobio, uno dei suoi amici, a trattare con lui e dirgli: "Voi avete occupato Giaffa, Ghezer e l'Acra di Gerusalemme, che sono città del mio regno.
29 You have laid waste their territories, done great harm to the land, and taken possession of many districts in my realm.	29 Avete devastato i loro territori, avete prodotto una grande piaga nel paese e vi siete impadroniti di molte altre località nel mio regno.
30 Therefore, give up the cities you have seized and the tribute money of the districts outside the territory of Judea of which you have taken possession;	30 Ora, perciò, consegnate le città che avete occupato e i tributi delle località di cui vi siete impadroniti fuori dai confini della Giudea.
31 or instead, pay me five hundred talents of silver for the devastation you have caused and five hundred talents more for the tribute money of the cities. 32 So Athenobius, the king's Friend, came to Jerusalem and on seeing the splendor of Simon's court, the gold and silver plate on the sideboard, and the rest of his rich display, he was amazed. 36 Athenobius made no reply, but returned to the king in anger. 41 As the king ordered, he fortified Kedron and stationed horsemen and infantry there, so that they could go out and patrol the roads of Judea.	41 Ricostruì Cedron e vi collocò cavalieri e truppe affinché, facendo delle sortite, battessero le strade della Giudea, come gli aveva ordinato il re.
