1 Antiochus, son of King Demetrius, sent a letter from the islands of the sea to Simon, the priest and ethnarch of the Jews, and to all the nation,	1 Antioco, figlio del re Demetrio, inviò lettere dalle isole del mare a Simone, sacerdote ed etnarca dei Giudei, e a tutta la nazione;
2 which read as follows: "King Antiochus sends greetings to Simon, the priest and ethnarch, and to the Jewish nation.	2 il loro contenuto era del seguente tenore: «Il re Antioco a Simone, grande sacerdote ed etnarca, e al popolo dei Giudei, salute!
3 Whereas certain villains have gained control of the kingdom of my ancestors, I intend to reclaim it, that I may restore it to its former state. I have recruited a large number of mercenary troops and equipped warships	3 Poiché alcuni uomini pestiferi si sono impadroniti del regno dei nostri padri, voglio rivendicare i miei diritti sul regno, per ricostruirlo com’era prima; ho reclutato un esercito ingente di mercenari e allestito navi da guerra.
4 to make a landing in my country and take revenge on those who have ruined it and laid waste many cities in my realm.	4 È mia volontà sbarcare nella regione, per punire coloro che hanno rovinato il nostro paese e desolato molte città nel mio regno.
5 "Now, therefore, I confirm to you all the tax exemptions that the kings before me granted you and whatever other privileges they conferred on you.	5 Ora ti confermo tutte le esenzioni, che ti hanno concesso i re miei predecessori, e tutte le altre dispense dai doni.
6 I authorize you to coin your own money, as legal tender in your country.	6 Ti concedo di battere moneta propria con corso legale al tuo paese.
7 Jerusalem and its temple shall be free. All the weapons you have prepared and all the strongholds you have built and now occupy shall remain in your possession.	7 Gerusalemme e il suo santuario siano liberi; tutti gli armamenti, che hai preparato, e le fortezze che hai costruito e occupi, restino in tuo possesso.
8 All debts, present or future, due to the royal treasury shall be canceled for you, now and for all time.	8 Quanto devi al re e i debiti che potrai avere verso il re in avvenire da ora e per sempre, ti sono rimessi.
9 When we recover our kingdom, we will greatly honor you and your nation and the temple, so that your glory will be manifest in all the earth."	9 Quando poi avremo preso possesso del nostro regno, onoreremo te, la tua nazione e il tempio con grandi onori, così da rendere manifesta la vostra gloria in tutta la terra».
10 In the year one hundred and seventy-four Antiochus invaded the land of his ancestors, and all the troops rallied to him, so that few were left with Trypho.	10 Nell’anno centosettantaquattro Antioco partì per la terra dei suoi padri e si schierarono con lui tutte le milizie, di modo che pochi rimasero con Trifone.
11 Pursued by Antiochus, Trypho fled to Dor, by the sea,	11 Antioco si diede ad inseguirlo e quello, fuggendo, giunse fino a Dora sul mare,
12 realizing what a mass of troubles had come upon him now that his soldiers had deserted him.	12 perché vedeva che i mali si addensavano su di lui, mentre le truppe lo abbandonavano.
13 Antiochus encamped before Dor with a hundred and twenty thousand infantry and eight thousand horsemen.	13 Antioco pose il campo contro Dora, avendo con sé centoventimila armati e ottomila cavalieri.
14 While he invested the city, his ships closed in along the coast, so that he blockaded it by land and sea and let no one go in or out.	14 Egli circondò la città, mentre le navi attaccavano dal mare; fece pressione contro la città dalla terra e dal mare, non lasciando più entrare né uscire alcuno.
15 Meanwhile, Numenius and his companions left Rome with letters such as this addressed to various kings and countries:	15 Intanto arrivarono da Roma Numenio e i suoi compagni, portando lettere per i re dei vari paesi. Esse dicevano:
16 "Lucius, Consul of the Romans, sends greetings to King Ptolemy.	16 «Lucio, console dei Romani, al re Tolomeo, salute!
17 Certain envoys of the Jews, our friends and allies, have come to us to renew their earlier alliance of friendship. They had been sent by Simon the high priest and the Jewish people,	17 Gli ambasciatori dei Giudei sono giunti a noi come nostri amici e alleati, per rinnovare l’antica amicizia e alleanza, inviati da Simone, sommo sacerdote, e dal popolo dei Giudei.
18 and they brought with them a gold shield worth a thousand minas.	18 Hanno portato uno scudo d’oro di mille mine.
19 Therefore we have decided to write to various kings and countries, that they are not to harm them, or wage war against them or their cities or their country, and are not to assist those who fight against them.	19 Ci è sembrato bene perciò scrivere ai re dei vari paesi, perché non facciano loro del male, né facciano guerra alle loro città o alla loro regione, né combattano insieme a chi entri in guerra con loro.
20 We have also decided to accept the shield from them.	20 Ci è parso bene accettare da loro lo scudo.
21 If, then, any troublemakers from their country take refuge with you, hand them over to Simon the high priest, so that he may punish them according to their law."	21 Se pertanto uomini pestiferi sono fuggiti dalla loro regione presso di voi, consegnateli a Simone, sommo sacerdote, perché ne faccia giustizia secondo la loro legge».
22 The consul sent similar letters to Kings Demetrius, Attalus, Ariarthes and Arsaces;	22 Uguali espressioni scrissero al re Demetrio, ad Àttalo, ad Ariarate e Arsace
23 to all the countries--Sampsames, Sparta, Delos, Myndos, Sicyon, Caria, Samos, Pamphylia, Lycia, Halicarnassus, Rhodes, Phaselis, Cos, Side, Aradus, Gortyna, Cnidus, Cyprus, and Cyrene.	23 e a tutti i paesi: a Sampsame, agli Spartani, a Delo, a Mindo, a Sicione, alla Caria, a Samo, alla Panfìlia, alla Licia, ad Alicarnasso, a Rodi, a Fasèlide, a Coo, a Side, ad Arado, a Gòrtina, a Cnido, a Cipro e a Cirene.
24 A copy of the letter was also sent to Simon the high priest.	24 Copia di queste lettere scrissero per Simone, sommo sacerdote.
25 When King Antiochus was encamped before Dor, he assaulted it continuously both with troops and with the siege machines he had made. He blockaded Trypho by preventing anyone from going in or out.	25 Il re Antioco, dunque, teneva il campo contro Dora da due giorni, lanciando continuamente contro di essa le schiere e costruendo macchine; così aveva precluso a Trifone ogni possibilità di uscire ed entrare.
26 Simon sent to Antiochus' support two thousand elite troops, together with gold and silver and much equipment.	26 Simone gli inviò duemila uomini scelti, per combattere al suo fianco, oltre ad argento, oro e molti equipaggiamenti.
27 But he refused to accept the aid; in fact, he broke all the agreements he had previously made with Simon and became hostile toward him.	27 Ma Antioco non volle accettare nulla, anzi ritirò quanto aveva prima concesso a Simone e si mostrò ostile con lui.
28 He sent Athenobius, one of his Friends, to confer with Simon and say: "You are occupying Joppa and Gazara and the citadel of Jerusalem; these are cities of my kingdom.	28 Poi gli inviò Atenòbio, uno dei suoi amici, a trattare con lui in questi termini: «Voi occupate Giaffa, Ghezer e la Cittadella di Gerusalemme, tutte città del mio regno.
29 You have laid waste their territories, done great harm to the land, and taken possession of many districts in my realm.	29 Avete devastato il loro territorio e avete causato rovina grande nel paese e vi siete impadroniti di molte località nel mio regno.
30 Therefore, give up the cities you have seized and the tribute money of the districts outside the territory of Judea of which you have taken possession;	30 Ora, perciò, consegnate le città che avete occupato, insieme con i tributi delle località di cui vi siete impadroniti fuori del territorio della Giudea,
31 or instead, pay me five hundred talents of silver for the devastation you have caused and five hundred talents more for the tribute money of the cities. If you do not do this, we will come and make war on you."	31 oppure dateci in cambio cinquecento talenti d’argento e, in compenso dei danni arrecati e dei tributi delle città, altri cinquecento talenti; altrimenti verremo e vi muoveremo guerra».
32 So Athenobius, the king's Friend, came to Jerusalem and on seeing the splendor of Simon's court, the gold and silver plate on the sideboard, and the rest of his rich display, he was amazed. When he gave him the king's message,	32 Atenòbio, l’amico del re, si recò a Gerusalemme e vide la gloria di Simone, il vasellame con lavori in oro e argento e il suo grande fasto e ne rimase meravigliato. Gli riferì le parole del re,
33 Simon said to him in reply: "We have not seized any foreign land; what we took is not the property of others, but our ancestral heritage which for a time had been unjustly held by our enemies.	33 ma Simone gli rispose: «Non abbiamo occupato terra straniera né ci siamo impossessati di beni altrui, ma dell’eredità dei nostri padri, che fu occupata un tempo dai nostri nemici senza alcun diritto.
34 Now that we have the opportunity, we are holding on to the heritage of our ancestors.	34 Noi, avendone avuta l’opportunità, abbiamo recuperato l’eredità dei nostri padri.
35 As for Joppa and Gazara, which you demand, the men of these cities were doing great harm to our people and laying waste our country; however, we are willing to pay you a hundred talents for these cities."	35 Quanto a Giaffa e a Ghezer, che tu reclami, esse causavano un grave danno tra il popolo e nella nostra regione: per esse vi daremo cento talenti».
36 Athenobius made no reply, but returned to the king in anger. When he told him of Simon's words, of his splendor, and of all he had seen, the king fell into a violent rage.	36 Atenòbio non rispose nulla, ma indispettito tornò presso il re, al quale riferì quelle parole, la gloria di Simone e quanto aveva visto. Il re si adirò grandemente.
37 Trypho had gotten aboard a ship and escaped to Orthosia.	37 Trifone intanto, salito su una nave, fuggì a Ortosìa.
38 Then the king appointed Cendebeus commander-in-chief of the seacoast, and gave him infantry and cavalry forces.	38 Il re allora nominò Cendebeo primo stratega della zona litoranea e mise al suo comando forze di fanteria e cavalleria.
39 He ordered him to move his troops against Judea and to fortify Kedron and strengthen its gates, so that he could launch attacks against the Jewish people. Meanwhile the king went in pursuit of Trypho.	39 Poi gli ordinò di accamparsi in vista della Giudea e gli ordinò di ricostruire Cedron, rinforzandone le porte, e di iniziare la guerra contro il popolo. Il re intanto continuò la caccia a Trifone.
40 When Cendebeus came to Jamnia, he began to harass the people and to make incursions into Judea, where he took people captive or massacred them.	40 Cendebeo si recò a Iàmnia e cominciò a molestare il popolo, a invadere la Giudea, a fare prigionieri tra il popolo e a metterli a morte.
41 As the king ordered, he fortified Kedron and stationed horsemen and infantry there, so that they could go out and patrol the roads of Judea.	41 Ricostruì Cedron e vi dispose la cavalleria e le truppe, perché potessero uscire e battere le strade della Giudea, come gli aveva ordinato il re.
