1 Antiochus, son of King Demetrius, sent a letter from the islands of the sea to Simon, the priest and ethnarch of the Jews, and to all the nation,	1 Envió Antíoco, hijo del rey Demetrio, desde las islas del mar una carta a Simón, sacerdote y etnarca de los judíos, y a toda la nación,
2 which read as follows: "King Antiochus sends greetings to Simon, the priest and ethnarch, and to the Jewish nation.	2 redactada en los siguientes términos: «El rey Antíoco saluda a Simón, sumo sacerdote y etnarca, y a la nación de los judíos.
3 Whereas certain villains have gained control of the kingdom of my ancestors, I intend to reclaim it, that I may restore it to its former state. I have recruited a large number of mercenary troops and equipped warships	3 Puesto que una peste de hombres ha venido a apoderarse del reino de nuestros padres, y he resuelto reivindicar mis derechos sobre él y restablecerlo como anteriormente estaba, y he reclutado fuerzas considerables y equipado navíos de guerra,
4 to make a landing in my country and take revenge on those who have ruined it and laid waste many cities in my realm.	4 y quiero desembarcar en el país para encontrarme con los que lo han arruinado y han devastado muchas ciudades de mi reino,
5 "Now, therefore, I confirm to you all the tax exemptions that the kings before me granted you and whatever other privileges they conferred on you.	5 ratifico ahora en tu favor todas las exenciones que te concedieron los reyes anteriores a mí y cuantas dispensas de otras donaciones te otorgaron.
6 I authorize you to coin your own money, as legal tender in your country.	6 Te autorizo a acuñar moneda propia de curso legal en tu país.
7 Jerusalem and its temple shall be free. All the weapons you have prepared and all the strongholds you have built and now occupy shall remain in your possession.	7 Jerusalén y el Lugar Santo sean libres. Todas las armas que has fabricado y las fortalezas que has contruido y ocupas, queden en tu poder.
8 All debts, present or future, due to the royal treasury shall be canceled for you, now and for all time.	8 Cuanto debes al tesoro real y cuanto en el futuro dejes a deber, te sea perdonado desde ahora para siempre.
9 When we recover our kingdom, we will greatly honor you and your nation and the temple, so that your glory will be manifest in all the earth."	9 Y cuando hayamos ocupado nuestro reino, te honraremos a ti, a tu nación y al santuario con tales honores que vuestra gloria será conocida en toda la tierra».
10 In the year one hundred and seventy-four Antiochus invaded the land of his ancestors, and all the troops rallied to him, so that few were left with Trypho.	10 El año 174 partió Antíoco para el país de sus padres y todas las tropas se pasaron a él de modo que pocos quedaron con Trifón.
11 Pursued by Antiochus, Trypho fled to Dor, by the sea,	11 Antíoco se lanzó en su persecución y Trifón se refugió en Dora a orillas del mar,
12 realizing what a mass of troubles had come upon him now that his soldiers had deserted him.	12 porque veía que las desgracias se abatían sobre él y se encontraba abandonado de sus tropas.
13 Antiochus encamped before Dor with a hundred and twenty thousand infantry and eight thousand horsemen.	13 Antíoco puso cerco a Dora con los 120.000 combatientes y los 8.000 jinetes que consigo tenía.
14 While he invested the city, his ships closed in along the coast, so that he blockaded it by land and sea and let no one go in or out.	14 Bloqueó la ciudad, y de la parte del mar se acercaron las naves, de modo que estrechó a la ciudad por tierra y por mar sin dejar que nadie entrase o saliese.
15 Meanwhile, Numenius and his companions left Rome with letters such as this addressed to various kings and countries:	15 Entre tanto, regresaron de Roma Numenio y sus acompañantes trayendo cartas para los reyes y países, escritas de este modo:
16 "Lucius, Consul of the Romans, sends greetings to King Ptolemy.	16 «Lucio, cónsul de los romanos, saluda al rey Tolomeo.
17 Certain envoys of the Jews, our friends and allies, have come to us to renew their earlier alliance of friendship. They had been sent by Simon the high priest and the Jewish people,	17 Han venido a nosotros, en calidad de amigos y aliados nuestros, los embajadores de los judíos para renovar nuestra antigua amistad y alianza, enviados por el sumo sacerdote Simón y por el pueblo de los judíos,
18 and they brought with them a gold shield worth a thousand minas.	18 y nos han traído un escudo de oro de mil minas.
19 Therefore we have decided to write to various kings and countries, that they are not to harm them, or wage war against them or their cities or their country, and are not to assist those who fight against them.	19 Nos ha parecido bien, en consecuencia, escribir a los reyes y países que no intenten causarles mal alguno, ni les ataquen a ellos ni a sus ciudades ni a su país, y que no presten su apoyo a los que los ataquen.
20 We have also decided to accept the shield from them.	20 Hemos decidido aceptar de ellos el escudo.
21 If, then, any troublemakers from their country take refuge with you, hand them over to Simon the high priest, so that he may punish them according to their law."	21 Si, pues, individuos perniciosos huyen de su país y se refugian en el vuestro, entregadlos al sumo sacerdote Simón para que los castigue según su ley».
22 The consul sent similar letters to Kings Demetrius, Attalus, Ariarthes and Arsaces;	22 Cartas iguales fueron remitidas al rey Demetrio, a Atalo, a Ariarates, a Arsaces
23 to all the countries--Sampsames, Sparta, Delos, Myndos, Sicyon, Caria, Samos, Pamphylia, Lycia, Halicarnassus, Rhodes, Phaselis, Cos, Side, Aradus, Gortyna, Cnidus, Cyprus, and Cyrene.	23 y a todos los países: a Sámpsamo, a los espartanos, a Delos, a Mindos, a Sición, a Caria, a Samos, a Panfilia, a Licia, a Halicarnaso, a Rodas, a Fasélida, a Cos, a Side, a Arados, a Gortina, a Cnido, a Chipre y a Cirene.
24 A copy of the letter was also sent to Simon the high priest.	24 Redactaron además una copia de esta carta para el sumo sacerdote Simón.
25 When King Antiochus was encamped before Dor, he assaulted it continuously both with troops and with the siege machines he had made. He blockaded Trypho by preventing anyone from going in or out.	25 El rey Antíoco, pues, tenía puesto cerco a Dora en los arrabales, lanzaba sin tregua sus tropas contra la ciudad y construía ingenios de guerra. Tenía bloqueado a Trifón y nadie podía entrar ni salir.
26 Simon sent to Antiochus' support two thousand elite troops, together with gold and silver and much equipment.	26 Simón le envió 2.000 hombres escogidos para ayudarle en la lucha, además de plata, oro y abundante material.
27 But he refused to accept the aid; in fact, he broke all the agreements he had previously made with Simon and became hostile toward him.	27 Pero no quiso recibir el envío; antes bien rescindió cuanto había convenido anteriormente con Simón y se mostró hostil con él.
28 He sent Athenobius, one of his Friends, to confer with Simon and say: "You are occupying Joppa and Gazara and the citadel of Jerusalem; these are cities of my kingdom.	28 Envió donde él a Atenobio, uno de sus amigos, a entrevistarse con él y decirle: «Vosotros ocupáis Joppe, Gázara y la Ciudadela de Jerusalén, ciudades de mi reino.
29 You have laid waste their territories, done great harm to the land, and taken possession of many districts in my realm.	29 Habéis devastado sus territorios, causado graves daños en el país y os habéis adueñado de muchas localidades de mi reino.
30 Therefore, give up the cities you have seized and the tribute money of the districts outside the territory of Judea of which you have taken possession;	30 Devolved, pues, ahora las ciudades que habéis tomado y los impuestos de las localidades de que os habéis adueñado fuera de los límites de Judea.
31 or instead, pay me five hundred talents of silver for the devastation you have caused and five hundred talents more for the tribute money of the cities. If you do not do this, we will come and make war on you."	31 O bien, pagad en compensación quinientos talentos de plata y otros quinientos talentos por los estragos que habéis causado y por los impuestos de las ciudades. De lo contrario iremos y os haremos la guerra».
32 So Athenobius, the king's Friend, came to Jerusalem and on seeing the splendor of Simon's court, the gold and silver plate on the sideboard, and the rest of his rich display, he was amazed. When he gave him the king's message,	32 Llegó, pues, Atenobio, el amigo del rey, a Jerusalén y al ver la magnificencia de Simón, su aparador con vajilla de oro y plata y todo el esplendor que le rodeaba, quedó asombrado. Le comunicó el mensaje del rey
33 Simon said to him in reply: "We have not seized any foreign land; what we took is not the property of others, but our ancestral heritage which for a time had been unjustly held by our enemies.	33 y Simón le respondió con estas palabras: «Ni nos hemos apoderado de tierras ajenas ni nos hemos apropiado bienes de otros, sino de la heredad de nuestros padres. Por algún tiempo la poseyeron injustamente nuestros enemigos
34 Now that we have the opportunity, we are holding on to the heritage of our ancestors.	34 y nosotros, aprovechando una ocasión favorable, hemos recuperado la heredad de nuestros padres.
35 As for Joppa and Gazara, which you demand, the men of these cities were doing great harm to our people and laying waste our country; however, we are willing to pay you a hundred talents for these cities."	35 En cuanto a Joppe y Gázara que nos reclamas, esas ciudades causaban graves daños al pueblo y asolaban nuestro país. Por ellas daremos cien talentos». No respondió palabra Atenobio,
36 Athenobius made no reply, but returned to the king in anger. When he told him of Simon's words, of his splendor, and of all he had seen, the king fell into a violent rage.	36 sino que se volvió furioso donde el rey y le refirió la respuesta, la magnificencia de Simón y todo lo que había visto. El rey montó en violenta cólera.
37 Trypho had gotten aboard a ship and escaped to Orthosia.	37 Trifón, embarcado en una nave, huyó a Ortosia.
38 Then the king appointed Cendebeus commander-in-chief of the seacoast, and gave him infantry and cavalry forces.	38 Entonces el rey nombró a Cendebeo epistratega de la Zona Marítima y le entregó tropas de infantería y de caballería,
39 He ordered him to move his troops against Judea and to fortify Kedron and strengthen its gates, so that he could launch attacks against the Jewish people. Meanwhile the king went in pursuit of Trypho.	39 con la orden de acampar frente a Judea, construir Cedrón, fortificar sus puertas y combatir contra el pueblo. El rey partió en seguimiento de Trifón.
40 When Cendebeus came to Jamnia, he began to harass the people and to make incursions into Judea, where he took people captive or massacred them.	40 Cendebeo llegó a Yamnia y comenzó a hostigar al pueblo, efectuar incursiones por Judea, capturar prisioneros y matar.
41 As the king ordered, he fortified Kedron and stationed horsemen and infantry there, so that they could go out and patrol the roads of Judea.	41 Reconstruyó Cedrón donde alojó caballería y tropas para recorrer en salidas los caminos de Judea como se lo tenía ordenado el rey.
