1 Antiochus, son of King Demetrius, sent a letter from the islands of the sea to Simon, the priest and ethnarch of the Jews, and to all the nation,	1 Or il re Antioco figliuolo di Demetrio scrisse dalle isole del mare una lettera a Simone sommo sacerdote e principe della nazione dei Giudei e a tutta la nazione:
2 which read as follows: "King Antiochus sends greetings to Simon, the priest and ethnarch, and to the Jewish nation.	2 La qual lettera era di tal tenore: Il re Antioco a Simone sommo Sacerdote e alla nazione dei Giudei, salute.
3 Whereas certain villains have gained control of the kingdom of my ancestors, I intend to reclaim it, that I may restore it to its former state. I have recruited a large number of mercenary troops and equipped warships	3 Dappoiche' alcuni uomini pestilenziali hanno invaso il regno de' padri nostri, e io voglio liberare il regno, e rimetterlo nel suo primiero stato, ed ho messo insieme uno scelto esercito, ed ho fatte costruire navi da guerra,
4 to make a landing in my country and take revenge on those who have ruined it and laid waste many cities in my realm.	4 Ho intenzione di entrar nel paese per punire quelli che hanno messe sossopra le nostre provincie, e han desolata molte città del mio regno.
5 "Now, therefore, I confirm to you all the tax exemptions that the kings before me granted you and whatever other privileges they conferred on you.	5 Io pertanto ti condono tutti i tributi condonati a te da tutti i re miei predecessori, e tutti i doni, che questi han rimessi a te.
6 I authorize you to coin your own money, as legal tender in your country.	6 E ti concedo di poter battere moneta proprio nel tuo paese.
7 Jerusalem and its temple shall be free. All the weapons you have prepared and all the strongholds you have built and now occupy shall remain in your possession.	7 E che Gerusalemme sia città santa e libera, e che tutte le armi fabbricate da te, e le fortezze, che tu hai edificate, ed hai in tuo potere, rimangan tue.
8 All debts, present or future, due to the royal treasury shall be canceled for you, now and for all time.	8 E tutti i debiti colla azienda reale tanto pel passato, che pel futuro, ti sono rimessi da questo punto.
9 When we recover our kingdom, we will greatly honor you and your nation and the temple, so that your glory will be manifest in all the earth."	9 E quando sarem pervenuti al possesso del nostro regno, renderemo onor grande a te, e alla tua nazione e al tempio, talmente che la vostra gloria si spanderà per tutta la terra.
10 In the year one hundred and seventy-four Antiochus invaded the land of his ancestors, and all the troops rallied to him, so that few were left with Trypho.	10 L'anno cento settantaquattro entrò Antioco nel paese de' padri suoi; e corsero a lui tutti gli eserciti, talmente che pochi rimasero con Trifone.
11 Pursued by Antiochus, Trypho fled to Dor, by the sea,	11 E il re Antioco lo inseguì; e quegli fuggendo lungo la spiaggia del mare arrivò a Dora:
12 realizing what a mass of troubles had come upon him now that his soldiers had deserted him.	12 Perocchè egli vedeva le sciagure piovergli addosso, avendolo abbandonato l'esercito.
13 Antiochus encamped before Dor with a hundred and twenty thousand infantry and eight thousand horsemen.	13 E Antioco si avvicinò a Dora con centoventi mila uomini di valore e otto mila cavalli.
14 While he invested the city, his ships closed in along the coast, so that he blockaded it by land and sea and let no one go in or out.	14 E circondò la città, e si aggiunser le navi dalla parte del mare, onde la città era battuta per mare e per terra, e non poteva nissuno uscirne, o entrarvi.
15 Meanwhile, Numenius and his companions left Rome with letters such as this addressed to various kings and countries:	15 Ma Numenio co' suoi compagni giunse da Roma con lettere scritte ai re e ai popoli di questo tenore:
16 "Lucius, Consul of the Romans, sends greetings to King Ptolemy.	16 Lucio console de' Romani al re Tolomeo, salute.
17 Certain envoys of the Jews, our friends and allies, have come to us to renew their earlier alliance of friendship. They had been sent by Simon the high priest and the Jewish people,	17 Sono venuti a noi gli ambasciadori dei Giudei nostri amici a rinnovar l'amicizia e la confederazione, mandati da Simone principe de' sacerdoti e dal popolo de' Giudei.
18 and they brought with them a gold shield worth a thousand minas.	18 Ed hanno portato un brocchiere di oro di mille mine.
19 Therefore we have decided to write to various kings and countries, that they are not to harm them, or wage war against them or their cities or their country, and are not to assist those who fight against them.	19 È adunque piaciuto a noi di scrivere ai re e ai popoli, che non facciano torto ad essi, e non molestino né loro, ne le loro città e paesi, e non dieno aiuto a quelli, che lor movessero guerra.
20 We have also decided to accept the shield from them.	20 E abbiamo creduto di dover accettare il brocchiere.
21 If, then, any troublemakers from their country take refuge with you, hand them over to Simon the high priest, so that he may punish them according to their law."	21 Se pertanto vi sono degli uomini malvagi, i quali dal loro paese sieno fuggiti nel vostro, rimettetegli a Simone principe dei Sacerdoti, affinché li punisca secondo la sua legge.
22 The consul sent similar letters to Kings Demetrius, Attalus, Ariarthes and Arsaces;	22 Le stesse cose furono scritte al re Demetrio e ad Attalo e ad Ariarate e ad Arsace,
23 to all the countries--Sampsames, Sparta, Delos, Myndos, Sicyon, Caria, Samos, Pamphylia, Lycia, Halicarnassus, Rhodes, Phaselis, Cos, Side, Aradus, Gortyna, Cnidus, Cyprus, and Cyrene.	23 E a tutte le provincie, ai Lampsaceni agli Sparziali, a quei di Delo e di Mindo e di Sicione e a quei della Caria e di Samo e della Pamfilia e della Licia e di Halicarnasso e di Coo e di Side e di Aradon e di Rodi e di Phaselide e di Gorlina e di Gnido e di Cipro e di Cirene.
24 A copy of the letter was also sent to Simon the high priest.	24 E mandaron copia della lettera a Simone principe dei Sacerdoti e al popolo dei Giudei.
25 When King Antiochus was encamped before Dor, he assaulted it continuously both with troops and with the siege machines he had made. He blockaded Trypho by preventing anyone from going in or out.	25 Or il re Antioco si avvicinò coll'esercito per la seconda volta a Dora, battendola continuamente, e alzando macchine; e strinse talmente Trifone, che non poteva scamparne:
26 Simon sent to Antiochus' support two thousand elite troops, together with gold and silver and much equipment.	26 E Simone mandò in suo aiuto due mila uomini scelti, e argento e oro e vasi in copia:
27 But he refused to accept the aid; in fact, he broke all the agreements he had previously made with Simon and became hostile toward him.	27 Ma quegli non volle riceverli, e mancò a tutte le convenzioni fatte prima con lui, e se gli mostrò avverso.
28 He sent Athenobius, one of his Friends, to confer with Simon and say: "You are occupying Joppa and Gazara and the citadel of Jerusalem; these are cities of my kingdom.	28 E mandò a tui Athenobio, uno dei suoi a discorrerla con Simone, e a dirgli: voi occupate Joppe e Gazara e la cittadella di Gerusalemme, città spettanti al mio regno:
29 You have laid waste their territories, done great harm to the land, and taken possession of many districts in my realm.	29 Avete desolati i lor territori, e avete fatti mali grandi nel paese, e avete usurpati molti luoghi del mio regno.
30 Therefore, give up the cities you have seized and the tribute money of the districts outside the territory of Judea of which you have taken possession;	30 Ora dunque rimettere le città occupate da voi, e i tributi esatti nè luoghi, dei quali vi siete fatti padroni fuori de' confini della Giudea:
31 or instead, pay me five hundred talents of silver for the devastation you have caused and five hundred talents more for the tribute money of the cities. If you do not do this, we will come and make war on you."	31 Ovvero date per quelle (città) cinque cento talenti d'argento, e pe' guasti fatti da voi e pe' tributi delle città, altri cinquecento talenti; altrimenti verremo, e vi faremo guerra.
32 So Athenobius, the king's Friend, came to Jerusalem and on seeing the splendor of Simon's court, the gold and silver plate on the sideboard, and the rest of his rich display, he was amazed. When he gave him the king's message,	32 E Athenobio amico del re giunse a Gerusalemme, e vide la magnificenza di Simone e la copia dell'oro e dell'argento e la quantità de' mobili di prezzo, e ne restò stupefatto: e riferì a lui le parole del re.
33 Simon said to him in reply: "We have not seized any foreign land; what we took is not the property of others, but our ancestral heritage which for a time had been unjustly held by our enemies.	33 E Simone gli rispose, e disse: Noi ne abbiamo usurpato le terre altrui, nè ritenghiamo la roba degli altri, ma l'eredità dei padri nostri, la quale ingiustamente fu posseduta per qualche tempo da' nostri nemici.
34 Now that we have the opportunity, we are holding on to the heritage of our ancestors.	34 Or noi servendoci dell'opportunità abbiam ricuperata l'eredità de' padri nostri.
35 As for Joppa and Gazara, which you demand, the men of these cities were doing great harm to our people and laying waste our country; however, we are willing to pay you a hundred talents for these cities."	35 Perocchè riguardo alle doglianze, che tu fai per ragion di Joppe e di Gazara, quelli facevano atroci danni al popolo e nel nostro paese: per queste noi diamo cento talenti. E Athenobio non rispose parola.
36 Athenobius made no reply, but returned to the king in anger. When he told him of Simon's words, of his splendor, and of all he had seen, the king fell into a violent rage.	36 Ma tornò indietro sdegnato, e riferì queste parole al re e la magnificenza di Simone e tutto quello che avea veduto. E il re si accese di sdegno.
37 Trypho had gotten aboard a ship and escaped to Orthosia.	37 Ma Trifone fuggi sopra una nave a Orthosiada.
38 Then the king appointed Cendebeus commander-in-chief of the seacoast, and gave him infantry and cavalry forces.	38 E il re diede il governo della costa del mare a Cendebeo, e gli rimise un'armata di fanti, e di cavalli.
39 He ordered him to move his troops against Judea and to fortify Kedron and strengthen its gates, so that he could launch attacks against the Jewish people. Meanwhile the king went in pursuit of Trypho.	39 E gli comando di andare verso la Giudea, e gli diede commissione di riedificare Gedor, e di fortificare le porte della città, e di domare il popolo de' Giudei. E il re dava dietro a Trifone.
40 When Cendebeus came to Jamnia, he began to harass the people and to make incursions into Judea, where he took people captive or massacred them.	40 E Cendebeo arrivò a Jamnia, e cominciò a vessare il popolo, e a desolar la Giudea, e far degli schiavi, e trucidare la gente: e fortificava Gedor.
41 As the king ordered, he fortified Kedron and stationed horsemen and infantry there, so that they could go out and patrol the roads of Judea.	41 E ivi collocò i soldati a cavallo e i fanti, i quali uscivan fuori a fare scorrerie per la Giudea secondo gli ordini del re.
