1 Then the LORD said to Moses,	1 Jahvè parlò a Mosè:
2 "Tell the Israelites to turn about and camp before Pi-hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea. You shall camp in front of Baal-zephon, just opposite, by the sea.	2 «Di ai figli di Israele che tornino indietro e si accampino davanti a Pi-Hakhirot, tra Migdol e il mare, di fronte a Baal-Zefon: vi accamperete di fronte ad esso, presso il mare.
3 Pharaoh will then say, 'The Israelites are wandering about aimlessly in the land. The desert has closed in on them.'	3 Il Faraone penserà; “I figli di Israele stanno errando qua e là per la terra, il deserto li tiene rinchiusi”.
4 Thus will I make Pharaoh so obstinate that he will pursue them. Then I will receive glory through Pharaoh and all his army, and the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD." This the Israelites did.	4 Io renderò ostinato il cuore del Faraone; egli si lancerà dietro di loro e io mi coprirò di gloria contro il Faraone e contro tutto il suo esercito; così gli Egiziani sapranno che io sono Jahvè». Ed essi fecero così.
5 When it was reported to the king of Egypt that the people had fled, Pharaoh and his servants changed their minds about them. "What have we done!" they exclaimed. "Why, we have released Israel from our service!"	5 Quando fu annunciato al re d'Egitto che il popolo era fuggito, il cuore del Faraone e quello dei suoi servitori si cambiò nei riguardi del popolo. Dissero: «Che cosa abbiamo fatto, lasciando che Israele se ne andasse dal nostro servizio?»
6 So Pharaoh made his chariots ready and mustered his soldiers--	6 Fece allestire il cocchio e prese con sé il popolo.
7 six hundred first-class chariots and all the other chariots of Egypt, with warriors on them all.	7 Prese seicento carri scelti e tutti i carri d’Egitto e scudieri sopra ognuno di loro.
8 So obstinate had the LORD made Pharaoh that he pursued the Israelites even while they were marching away in triumph.	8 Jahvè rese ostinato il cuore del Faraone re d’Egitto e questi si lanciò contro i figli di Israele, Ma i figli di Israele se ne andavano via a mano alzata.
9 The Egyptians, then, pursued them; Pharaoh's whole army, his horses, chariots and charioteers, caught up with them as they lay encamped by the sea, at Pi-hahiroth, in front of Baal-zephon.	9 Gli Egiziani si lanciarono dietro i figli di Israele: tutti i cavalli, i carri del Faraone, i suoi cavalieri e il suo esercito li raggiunsero mentre erano accampati presso il mare, vicino a Pi-Hakhirot, di fronte a Baal-Zefon.
10 Pharaoh was already near when the Israelites looked up and saw that the Egyptians were on the march in pursuit of them. In great fright they cried out to the LORD.	10 Mentre il Faraone si avvicinava, i figli di Israele alzarono gli occhi e, vedendo che gli Egiziani li inseguivano, ebbero una grande paura. I figli di Israele alzarono allora grida di aiuto a Jahvè.
11 And they complained to Moses, "Were there no burial places in Egypt that you had to bring us out here to die in the desert? Why did you do this to us? Why did you bring us out of Egypt?	11 Dissero a Mosè: «Forse non ci sono cimiteri in Egitto, perché tu ci abbia condotto a morire nel deserto? Quale servizio ci hai reso facendoci uscire dall’Egitto?
12 Did we not tell you this in Egypt, when we said, 'Leave us alone. Let us serve the Egyptians'? Far better for us to be the slaves of the Egyptians than to die in the desert."	12 In Egitto non ti avevamo noi detto chiaramente: “Cessa di molestarci! Noi vogliamo servire gli Egiziani! Preferiamo, infatti, servire gli Egiziani anziché morire nel deserto”».
13 But Moses answered the people, "Fear not! Stand your ground, and you will see the victory the LORD will win for you today. These Egyptians whom you see today you will never see again.	13 Mosè rispose al popolo: «Non temete! Siate forti e vedrete la salvezza che Jahvè, oggi stesso, compirà in vostro favore. Perché non rivedrete mai più questi Egiziani che vedete oggi.
14 The LORD himself will fight for you; you have only to keep still."	14 Jahvè combatterà per voi, mentre voi starete tranquilli».
15 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Why are you crying out to me? Tell the Israelites to go forward.	15 Jahvè disse a Mosè: «Perché innalzi grida d’aiuto verso di me? Di’ ai figli di Israele che levino le tende.
16 And you, lift up your staff and, with hand outstretched over the sea, split the sea in two, that the Israelites may pass through it on dry land.	16 Tu, poi, alza il tuo bastone stendi la mano sul mare e dividilo, così che i figli di Israele possano entrare in mezzo al mare, sul terreno asciutto.
17 But I will make the Egyptians so obstinate that they will go in after them. Then I will receive glory through Pharaoh and all his army, his chariots and charioteers.	17 Ecco, io sto rendendo ostinato il cuore degli Egiziani: questi entreranno dietro di loro. Allora mi coprirò di gloria contro il Faraone, contro tutto il suo esercito, i suoi carri e i suoi cavalieri.
18 The Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I receive glory through Pharaoh and his chariots and charioteers."	18 Quando mi sarò coperto di gloria contro il Faraone, i suoi carri e i suoi cavalieri, gli Egiziani sapranno che io sono Jahvè».
19 The angel of God, who had been leading Israel's camp, now moved and went around behind them. The column of cloud also, leaving the front, took up its place behind them,	19 Allora l’angelo di Dio, che andava alla testa dell’accampamento d’Israele, cambiò luogo portandosi dietro di esso. La colonna di nube cambiò luogo: dal davanti andò a porsi dietro di esso;
20 so that it came between the camp of the Egyptians and that of Israel. But the cloud now became dark, and thus the night passed without the rival camps coming any closer together all night long.	20 venne così tra l’accampamento degli Egiziani e quello di Israele. La nube si oscurò e passarono la notte: durante tutta la notte i due accampamenti non si avvicinarono.
21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the LORD swept the sea with a strong east wind throughout the night and so turned it into dry land. When the water was thus divided,	21 Mosè stese la mano sul mare. Jahvè agitò il mare per tutta la notte con un forte vento di oriente e rese il mare una terra asciutta. Le acque si divisero.
22 the Israelites marched into the midst of the sea on dry land, with the water like a wall to their right and to their left.	22 E i figli di Israele entrarono in mezzo al mare, sul terreno asciutto, mentre a destra e a sinistra le acque formavano per essi un muro.
23 The Egyptians followed in pursuit; all Pharaoh's horses and chariots and charioteers went after them right into the midst of the sea.	23 Gli Egiziani li inseguirono: tutti i cavalli del Faraone, i suoi carri e i suoi cavalieri entrarono dietro di loro, in mezzo al mare.
24 In the night watch just before dawn the LORD cast through the column of the fiery cloud upon the Egyptian force a glance that threw it into a panic;	24 Alla veglia del mattino, dalla colonna di fuoco e di nube, Jahvè guardò l’accampamento degli Egiziani e lo scompigliò.
25 and he so clogged their chariot wheels that they could hardly drive. With that the Egyptians sounded the retreat before Israel, because the LORD was fighting for them against the Egyptians.	25 Frenò le ruote dei loro carri e fece sì che avanzassero solo con grande stento. Dissero allora gli Egiziani: «Fuggiamo da Israele! Jahvè, infatti, combatte per loro contro gli Egiziani!»
26 Then the LORD told Moses, "Stretch out your hand over the sea, that the water may flow back upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots and their charioteers."	26 Jahvè disse a Mosè: «Stendi la mano sul mare. Le acque ritorneranno sopra gli Egiziani, sopra i loro carri e i loro cavalieri».
27 So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and at dawn the sea flowed back to its normal depth. The Egyptians were fleeing head on toward the sea, when the LORD hurled them into its midst.	27 Mosè stese la mano sul mare e, sul far del mattino, il mare ritornò al suo posto normale, mentre gli Egiziani in fuga gli andavano incontro. Jahvè gettò così gli Egiziani in mezzo al mare.
28 As the water flowed back, it covered the chariots and the charioteers of Pharaoh's whole army which had followed the Israelites into the sea. Not a single one of them escaped.	28 Ritornarono le acque e coprirono i carri, i cavalieri e tutto l’esercito del Faraone, che erano entrati nel mare dietro i figli di Israele. Non ne rimase neppure uno.
29 But the Israelites had marched on dry land through the midst of the sea, with the water like a wall to their right and to their left.	29 Invece, i figli di Israele avevano camminato sul terreno asciutto, in mezzo al mare, mentre le acque formavano per loro un muro a destra e a sinistra.
30 Thus the LORD saved Israel on that day from the power of the Egyptians. When Israel saw the Egyptians lying dead on the seashore	30 In quel giorno Jahvè salvò Israele dalla mano degli Egiziani e Israele vide sulla riva del mare gli Egiziani morti.
31 and beheld the great power that the LORD had shown against the Egyptians, they feared the LORD and believed in him and in his servant Moses.	31 Israele vide a grande potenza spiegata da Jahvè contro gli Egiziani e il popolo temette Jahvè. Credettero in Jahvè e in Mosè suo servitore.
