1 When the enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the exiles were building a temple for the LORD, the God of Israel,	1 I nemici di Giuda e di Beniamin vennero a sapere che i reduci dalla deportazione edificavano un tempio a Jahvè, Dio di Israele.
2 they approached Zerubbabel and the family heads and said to them, "Let us build with you, for we seek your God just as you do, and we have sacrificed to him since the days of Esarhaddon, king of Assyria, who had us brought here."	2 Si avvicinarono a Zorobabel e ai capicasata e parlarono loro: «Noi vogliamo aiutarvi a edificare erchè, come voi, cerchiamo il vostro Dio e a fi abbiamo offerto sacrifici fino al tempo di Assarhaddon, re di Assiria, che ci ha portato in questo luogo».
3 But Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the rest of the family heads of Israel answered them, "It is not your responsibility to build with us a house for our God, but we alone must build it for the LORD, the God of Israel, as King Cyrus of Persia has commanded us."	3 Ma Zorobabel, Giosuè e gli altri capicasata di Israele risposero loro: «Non c’è nulla tra voi e noi perché edifichiate una casa per il nostro Dio; noi soli dobbiamo edificarla per Jahvè, Dio di Israele, come ci ha comandato Ciro, re di Persia».
4 Thereupon the people of the land set out to intimidate and dishearten the people of Judah so as to keep them from building.	4 Allora il popolo della terra cominciò a scoraggiare la gente di Giuda e a spaventarla per farla cessare di fabbricare;

8 Then Rehum, the governor, and Shimshai, the scribe, wrote the following letter against Jerusalem to King Artaxerxes:	8 Rekhum giudice supremo e Shimshai lo scriba scrissero anche questa lettera ad Artaserse, re di Persia, contro Gerusalemme:
9 "Rehum, the governor, Shimshai, the scribe, and their fellow judges, officials, and agents from among the Persian, Urukian, Babylonian, Susian (that is Elamite),	9 «Rekhum giudice supremo, Shimshai lo scriba e il resto dei colleghi Dinei, Afarsatchei, Tarpelei, Afarsei, Archevei, Babilonesi, Susiani, cioè gli Elamiti
10 and the other peoples whom the great and illustrious Assurbanipal transported and settled in the city of Samaria and elsewhere in the province West-of-Euphrates, as follows. . . ."	10 e il resto dei popoli che il grande e glorioso Asnappar ha deportato e ha stabilito nelle città di Samaria e nel resto di Abar-Nahara —
11 This is a copy of the letter that they sent to him: "To King Artaxerxes, your servants, the men of West-of-Euphrates, as follows:	11 questa è la copia della lettera che gli inviarono: “Al re Artaserse, i tuoi servitori, gli uomini di Abar-Nahara,,. è ora:
12 Let it be known to the king that the Jews who came up from you to us have arrived at Jerusalem and are now rebuilding this rebellious and evil city. They are raising up its walls, and the foundations have already been laid.	12 sappia dunque il re che i Giudei, i quali sono partiti da te, quando giunsero tra di noi a Gerusalemme città ribelle e malvagia, ne hanno intrapreso la ricostruzione, restaurano le mura e riparano le fondamenta.
13 Now let it be known to the king that if this city is rebuilt and its walls are raised up again, they will no longer pay taxes, tributes, or tolls; thus it can only result in harm to the throne.	13 Ebbene, sappia anche il re che, se questa città verrà riedificata e le sue mura saranno restaurate, essi non pagheranno più né tributo né imposta né pedaggio; ciò che in fine sarà di danno al re.
14 Now, since we partake of the salt of the palace, we ought not simply to look on while the king is being dishonored. 15 so that inquiry may be made in the historical records of your fathers. In the historical records you can discover and verify that this city is a rebellious city which has proved fatal to kings and provinces, and that sedition has been fostered there since ancient times. For that reason this city was destroyed.	15 Fa' pure ricerche nei libri delle memorie dei tuoi padri. Nel libro delle memorie tu troverai e verraj a sapere che questa città fu una città ribelle e nociva ai re e alle province e, fino dai tempi antichi, si ordirono rivolte tra le sue mura; per tale motivo questa città fu distrutta.
16 We inform you, O king, that if this city is rebuilt and its walls are raised up again, by that very fact you will no longer own any part of West-of-Euphrates."	16 Noi informiamo il re che, se questa città verrà riedificata e le sue mura restaurate non ci sarà più possesso per te in Abar-Naharal”»,
17 The king sent this answer: "To Rehum, the governor, Shimshai, the scribe, and their fellow officials living in Samaria and elsewhere in the province West-of-Euphrates, greetings and the following:	17 Il re inviò la risposta: «A Rekhum giudice supremo, a Shimshai lo scriba e al resto dei colleghi che abitano a Samaria e nel resto di Abar-Nahara, pace; e ora:
18 The communication which you sent us has been read plainly in my presence.	18 lo scritto che mi avete inviato è stato letto accuratamente alla mia presenza;
19 When at my command inquiry was made, it was verified that from ancient times this city has risen up against kings and that rebellion and sedition have been fostered there.	19 dietro mio comando, si sono fatte ricerche ed è risultato che questa città veramente fino dai tempi antichi è insorta contro i re e che rivolte e congiure sono state provocate in essa,
20 Powerful kings were once in Jerusalem who ruled over all West-of-Euphrates, and taxes, tributes, and tolls were paid to them.	20 Che ci furono anche potenti re a Gerusalemme e hanno dominato tutto l’Abar-Nahara e che si pagarono loro tributi, imposte e pedaggi.
21 Give orders, therefore, that will stop the work of these men. This city may not be rebuilt until a further decree has been issued by me.	21 Comandate, quindi, che quella gente cessi e che la città non sia ricostruita, finché quest’ordine non sia dato da me.
22 Take care that you do not neglect this matter, lest the evil grow to the detriment of the throne."	22 Badate bene di non essere indolenti nell’eseguire quest’ordine, perché non cresca il danno arrecato ai re».
23 As soon as a copy of King Artaxerxes' letter had been read before Rehum, the governor, Shimshai, the scribe, and their fellow officials, they went in all haste to the Jews in Jerusalem and stopped their work by force of arms.	23 Appena la copia della lettera del re Artaserse fu letta alla presenza di Rekhum, di Shimshai lo scriba e dei loro colleghi, questi andarono in fretta a Gerusalemme dai Giudei e li fecero desistere con la forza e la violenza.
24 Thus it was that the work on the house of God in Jerusalem was halted. This inaction lasted until the second year of the reign of Darius, king of Persia.	24 Così cessò la costruzione del tempio di Dio, a Gerusalemme. La Sospensione durò fino al secondo anno del regno di Dario, re di Persia.
