1 When the enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the exiles were building a temple for the LORD, the God of Israel,	1 Quando i nemici di Giuda e di Beniamino vennero a sapere che gli esuli rimpatriati stavano costruendo un tempio al Signore, Dio d’Israele,
2 they approached Zerubbabel and the family heads and said to them, "Let us build with you, for we seek your God just as you do, and we have sacrificed to him since the days of Esarhaddon, king of Assyria, who had us brought here."	2 si presentarono a Zorobabele e ai capi di casato e dissero: «Vogliamo costruire anche noi insieme con voi, perché anche noi, come voi, cerchiamo il vostro Dio; a lui noi facciamo sacrifici dal tempo di Assarhàddon, re d’Assiria, che ci ha fatto salire qui».
3 But Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the rest of the family heads of Israel answered them, "It is not your responsibility to build with us a house for our God, but we alone must build it for the LORD, the God of Israel, as King Cyrus of Persia has commanded us."	3 Ma Zorobabele, Giosuè e gli altri capi di casato d’Israele dissero loro: «Non conviene che costruiamo insieme una casa al nostro Dio; noi soltanto la costruiremo al Signore, Dio d’Israele, come Ciro, re di Persia, ci ha ordinato».
4 Thereupon the people of the land set out to intimidate and dishearten the people of Judah so as to keep them from building.	4 Allora la popolazione locale si mise a scoraggiare il popolo dei Giudei e a intimorirlo perché non costruisse.
5 They also suborned counselors to work against them and thwart their plans during the remaining years of Cyrus, king of Persia, and until the reign of Darius, king of Persia.	5 Inoltre con denaro misero contro di loro alcuni funzionari, per far fallire il loro piano; e ciò per tutto il tempo di Ciro, re di Persia, fino al regno di Dario, re di Persia.
6 Also at the beginning of the reign of Ahashuerus they prepared a written accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.	6 Durante il regno di Serse, al principio del suo regno, essi presentarono una denuncia contro gli abitanti di Giuda e di Gerusalemme.
7 Again, in the time of Artaxerxes, Mithredath wrote in concert with Tabeel and the rest of his fellow officials to Artaxerxes, king of Persia. The document was written in Aramaic and was accompanied by a translation. (Aramaic:)	7 Poi al tempo di Artaserse, Bislam, Mitridate, Tabeèl e gli altri loro colleghi scrissero ad Artaserse re di Persia: il testo del documento era in caratteri aramaici e tradotto in aramaico.
8 Then Rehum, the governor, and Shimshai, the scribe, wrote the following letter against Jerusalem to King Artaxerxes:	8 Recum, governatore, e Simsài, scriba, scrissero al re Artaserse contro Gerusalemme la lettera seguente:
9 "Rehum, the governor, Shimshai, the scribe, and their fellow judges, officials, and agents from among the Persian, Urukian, Babylonian, Susian (that is Elamite),	9 «Da parte di Recum, governatore, e Simsài, scriba, e gli altri loro colleghi giudici e prefetti, uomini di Tarpel, di Persia, di Uruc, di Babilonia e di Susa, cioè di Elam,
10 and the other peoples whom the great and illustrious Assurbanipal transported and settled in the city of Samaria and elsewhere in the province West-of-Euphrates, as follows. . . ."	10 e altri popoli che il grande e illustre Asnappàr deportò e stabilì nella città di Samaria e nel resto della regione dell’Oltrefiume…».
11 This is a copy of the letter that they sent to him: "To King Artaxerxes, your servants, the men of West-of-Euphrates, as follows:	11 Questa è la copia della lettera che gli mandarono: «Al re Artaserse i tuoi servi, uomini della regione dell’Oltrefiume.
12 Let it be known to the king that the Jews who came up from you to us have arrived at Jerusalem and are now rebuilding this rebellious and evil city. They are raising up its walls, and the foundations have already been laid.	12 Sia noto al re che i Giudei che sono partiti da te e sono venuti presso di noi, a Gerusalemme, stanno ricostruendo la città ribelle e malvagia: hanno terminato le mura e riparato le fondamenta.
13 Now let it be known to the king that if this city is rebuilt and its walls are raised up again, they will no longer pay taxes, tributes, or tolls; thus it can only result in harm to the throne.	13 Ora sia noto al re che, se quella città è ricostruita e le mura sono riparate, tributi, imposte e tasse non saranno più pagati e questo danneggerà i re.
14 Now, since we partake of the salt of the palace, we ought not simply to look on while the king is being dishonored. Therefore we have sent this message to inform you, O king,	14 Ora, poiché noi mangiamo il sale della reggia e per noi non è decoroso stare a guardare la spoliazione del re, mandiamo informazioni al re,
15 so that inquiry may be made in the historical records of your fathers. In the historical records you can discover and verify that this city is a rebellious city which has proved fatal to kings and provinces, and that sedition has been fostered there since ancient times. For that reason this city was destroyed.	15 perché si facciano ricerche nel libro delle memorie dei tuoi padri: tu troverai nel libro delle memorie e constaterai che quella città è una città ribelle, causa di guai per re e province, e vi hanno fatto sedizioni fin dai tempi antichi. Per questo quella città è stata distrutta.
16 We inform you, O king, that if this city is rebuilt and its walls are raised up again, by that very fact you will no longer own any part of West-of-Euphrates."	16 Noi informiamo il re che, se quella città è ricostruita e le mura sono riparate, non avrai più possedimenti nella regione dell’Oltrefiume».
17 The king sent this answer: "To Rehum, the governor, Shimshai, the scribe, and their fellow officials living in Samaria and elsewhere in the province West-of-Euphrates, greetings and the following:	17 Il re inviò questa risposta: «A Recum, governatore, e Simsài, scriba, e agli altri loro colleghi, che risiedono in Samaria e nel resto della regione dell’Oltrefiume, salute! Ora,
18 The communication which you sent us has been read plainly in my presence.	18 la lettera che ci avete mandato è stata letta davanti a me accuratamente.
19 When at my command inquiry was made, it was verified that from ancient times this city has risen up against kings and that rebellion and sedition have been fostered there.	19 Dietro mio ordine si sono fatte ricerche, e si è trovato che quella città fin dai tempi antichi si è sollevata contro i re e in essa sono avvenute rivolte e sedizioni.
20 Powerful kings were once in Jerusalem who ruled over all West-of-Euphrates, and taxes, tributes, and tolls were paid to them.	20 A Gerusalemme vi furono re potenti che comandavano su tutto il territorio dell’Oltrefiume: a loro si pagavano tributi, imposte e tasse.
21 Give orders, therefore, that will stop the work of these men. This city may not be rebuilt until a further decree has been issued by me.	21 Date perciò ordine di fermare quegli uomini, e quella città non sia ricostruita, fino a mio ordine nuovo.
22 Take care that you do not neglect this matter, lest the evil grow to the detriment of the throne."	22 Badate di non essere negligenti in questo, perché non aumenti il danno arrecato al re».
23 As soon as a copy of King Artaxerxes' letter had been read before Rehum, the governor, Shimshai, the scribe, and their fellow officials, they went in all haste to the Jews in Jerusalem and stopped their work by force of arms.	23 Appena la copia della lettera del re Artaserse fu letta davanti a Recum e a Simsài, scriba, e ai loro colleghi, questi andarono in gran fretta a Gerusalemme dai Giudei e li fecero smettere con la forza e con la violenza.
24 Thus it was that the work on the house of God in Jerusalem was halted. This inaction lasted until the second year of the reign of Darius, king of Persia.	24 Così cessò il lavoro per il tempio di Dio che è a Gerusalemme e rimase fermo fino all’anno secondo del regno di Dario, re di Persia.
