1 With the royal power firmly in his grasp, Solomon allied himself by marriage with Pharaoh, king of Egypt. The daughter of Pharaoh, whom he married, he brought to the City of David, until he should finish building his palace, and the temple of the LORD, and the wall around Jerusalem.	1 Ora essendosi il potere regale consolidato nelle mani di Salomone, questi divenne genero del Faraone re d’Egitto, poiché ne sposò la figlia e la condusse nella città di David, dove rimase finché non terminò di costruire la propria casa, il tempio di Jahvè e il muro di cinta di Gerusalemme.
2 However, the people were sacrificing on the high places, for up to that time no temple had been built to the name of the LORD.	2 Il popolo però soleva offrire sacrifici sulle alture; fino a quel giorno non era ancora stato edificato il tempio al nome di Jahvè.
3 Solomon loved the LORD, and obeyed the statutes of his father David; yet he offered sacrifice and burned incense on the high places.	3 Salomone amava Jahvè camminando secondo le disposizioni di David suo padre, ma offriva sacrifici e profumi sulle alture.
4 The king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, because that was the most renowned high place. Upon its altar Solomon offered a thousand holocausts.	4 Il re venne dunque a Gabaon per offrire sacrifici; era quella l’altura più importante; su quell’altare Salomone usava offrire mille olocausti.
5 In Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream at night. God said, "Ask something of me and I will give it to you."	5 A Gabaon Jahvè apparve di notte in sogno a Salomone. Dio gli disse: «Chiedimi ciò che devo darti».
6 Solomon answered: "You have shown great favor to your servant, my father David, because he behaved faithfully toward you, with justice and an upright heart; and you have continued this great favor toward him, even today, seating a son of his on his throne.	6 Salomone rispose: «Tu hai usato grande bontà con il tuo servitore David mio padre poiché egli ha camminato al tuo cospetto con fedeltà, lealtà e rettitudine di cuore a tuo riguardo; pertanto tu gli hai conservato questa grande benevolenza e gli hai dato un figlio che sedesse sul suo trono, come oggi appare.
7 O LORD, my God, you have made me, your servant, king to succeed my father David; but I am a mere youth, not knowing at all how to act.	7 Ora, Jahvè mio Dio, tu hai costituito re il tuo servitore al posto di David mio padre; ma io sono un giovanetto e non so andare e venire,
8 I serve you in the midst of the people whom you have chosen, a people so vast that it cannot be numbered or counted.	8 mentre il tuo servitore sta in mezzo al popolo che ti sei scelto: un popolo incalcolabile e innumerevole per la moltitudine.
9 Give your servant, therefore, an understanding heart to judge your people and to distinguish right from wrong. For who is able to govern this vast people of yours?"	9 Concedi dunque al tuo servitore un cuore che comprenda per giudicare il tuo popolo, in modo da distinguere tra il bene e il male. Poiché chi mai potrebbe dirigere questo popolo così numeroso?»
10 The LORD was pleased that Solomon made this request.	10 La domanda, fatta da Salomone, piacque agli occhi di Jahvè.
11 So God said to him: "Because you have asked for this--not for a long life for yourself, nor for riches, nor for the life of your enemies, but for understanding so that you may know what is right--	11 Dio perciò gli parlò: «Poiché hai domandato una tale cosa e non hai domandato una lunga vita per te né hai domandato ricchezza né la vita dei tuoi nemici, ma hai domandato per te di poter giudicare intelligentemente,
12 I do as you requested. I give you a heart so wise and understanding that there has never been anyone like you up to now, and after you there will come no one to equal you.	12 ecco, io agisco secondo le tue parole. Ti concedo un cuore saggio e perspicace, come non ci fu prima di te né pari sorgerà dopo di te.
13 In addition, I give you what you have not asked for, such riches and glory that among kings there is not your like.	13 Inoltre ti concedo pure quanto non hai chiesto: ricchezza e onore, così che tra i re non ci sia mai uno uguale a te.
14 And if you follow me by keeping my statutes and commandments, as your father David did, I will give you a long life."	14 Se poi camminerai nelle mie vie, osservando i miei precetti e i miei ordini, come ha fatto David tuo padre, prolungherò anche i tuoi giorni».
15 When Solomon awoke from his dream, he went to Jerusalem, stood before the ark of the covenant of the LORD, offered holocausts and peace offerings, and gave a banquet for all his servants.	15 Salomone si svegliò ed ecco, era un sogno! Se ne andò allora a Gerusalemme e, innanzi all’arca dell’alleanza di Jahvè, offrì olocausti, immolò sacrifici pacifici e fece un banchetto a tutti i suoi servitori.
16 Later, two harlots came to the king and stood before him.	16 Vennero allora dal re due prostitute e gli stettero innanzi.
17 One woman said: "By your leave, my lord, this woman and I live in the same house, and I gave birth in the house while she was present.	17 Una di quelle donne disse; «Mio signore, io e questa donna abitiamo nella stessa casa e ivi ho partorito vicino a lei.
18 On the third day after I gave birth, this woman also gave birth. We were alone in the house; there was no one there but us two.	18 Ora, il terzo giorno dopo il mio parto, anche questa donna ha partorito. Noi due stiamo insieme né c’è alcun altro nella casa all’infuori di noi due.
19 This woman's son died during the night; she smothered him by lying on him.	19 Ora, il figlio di quella donna morì di notte, perché essa gli si era coricata sopra.
20 Later that night she got up and took my son from my side, as I, your handmaid, was sleeping. Then she laid him in her bosom, after she had laid her dead child in my bosom.	20 Questa nel cuore della notte si alzò, prese mio figlio dal mio fianco, mentre la tua schiava era addormentata, e lo pose a riposare sul suo seno, mentre pose il figlio morto in seno a me.
21 I rose in the morning to nurse my child, and I found him dead. But when I examined him in the morning light, I saw it was not the son whom I had borne."	21 Al mattino mi alzai per allattare il mio bambino ed ecco, era morto! Lo guardai però bene: non era il figlio che avevo partorito!»
22 The other woman answered, "It is not so! The living one is my son, the dead one is yours." But the first kept saying, "No, the dead one is your child, the living one is mine!" Thus they argued before the king.	22 Ma l’altra donna replicò: «Non è vero; mio figlio è quello vivo e il tuo è quello morto!» Quell’altra invece insisteva: «Non è vero; tuo figlio è quello morto e il mio è quello vivo!» Così altercavano innanzi al re.
23 Then the king said: "One woman claims, 'This, the living one, is my child, and the dead one is yours.' The other answers, 'No! The dead one is your child; the living one is mine.'"	23 Allora il re disse: «L’una afferma: “Questo qui è mio figlio, il vivo; invece il tuo è il morto”; e l’altra: “Non è vero; tuo figlio è quello morto e il mio è quello vivo”».
24 The king continued, "Get me a sword." When they brought the sword before him,	24 Il re perciò ordinò: «Portatemi una spada!» Come fu portata la spada al cospetto del re,
25 he said, "Cut the living child in two, and give half to one woman and half to the other."	25 il re soggiunse: «Dividete il bimbo che è vivo in due e datene metà a una donna e metà all’altra»
26 The woman whose son it was, in the anguish she felt for it, said to the king, "Please, my lord, give her the living child--please do not kill it!" The other, however, said, "It shall be neither mine nor yours. Divide it!"	26 Ma la donna, il cui bimbo era ancora vivo, sentendosi commuovere le viscere per suo figlio, disse al re: «Mio signore, date a lei il fanciulletto vivo, ma non uccidetelo!» Ma l’altra diceva: «Né a me né a te; dividete!»
27 The king then answered, "Give the first one the living child! By no means kill it, for she is the mother."	27 Allora il re sentenziò: «Quella che ha detto: “Date a costei il fanciullo vivo; ma non lo uccidete”, questa è la madre!»
28 When all Israel heard the judgment the king had given, they were in awe of him, because they saw that the king had in him the wisdom of God for giving judgment.	28 Tutto Israele udì parlare del giudizio che il re aveva pronunciato e temette il re, poiché vedeva che la sapienza di Dio era in lui per fare giustizia.
